Love Is All We Need
Cat: HYYR 16. Rel: 13 Jul 11

Deep House
Love Is All We Need (main mix)
Love Is All We Need (Braille remix)
Love Is All We Need (Bootleg mix)
Review: Jon Dasilva is one of the original Hacienda DJs, and this single on Rush Hour's Hour House is Your Rush imprint feels like a classic Summer of Love party tune straight outta 1988, albeit with a bit of Chicago flavour, provided in no small part by Donald Waugh's sublime vocal work. The "Bootleg mix" strips everything back, adding a drugged out quality to the bassline and taking the vocals and piano into a maelstrom of delay. Remix duties are performed by Braille, who follows up his incredible Year 3000 single with another brilliant production which takes the original and adds a restless rhythm to some percolating synths and pitch-shifted piano, adding a contemporary twist which will go down well with fans of his futuristic take on house music.

Warm
Review: This latest release on Hour House Is Your Rush sees the Rush Hour subsidiary dig into the sizeable archives of Jordan Fields to remaster two archival box jams straight from the reel tape that demand your full attention! "Boxbeater" was apparently inspired by the slam dancers who used to go wild on the rhythm tracks Ron Hardy used to play at the Music Box, and it shows. The terms rough and raw are oft used when describing house music, and "Boxbeater" should probably be used as the perfect example of this sound; it bangs hard too! Check the experimental, freeform vibes of "Warm" with a heavily saturated analogue flex complemented by the intermittent, darting melodic touches.

Data (long version)
Review: Tevo Howard stands alone in his ability to make true Chicago house music that keeps the feel of the original sounds of the city but adds a fresh and contemporary edge. After the success of his HHYR debut, "Move," he returns to the label with "Crystal Republic," a six track exploration through warm, deep and emotive Chicago house music.

The title track is hypnotic and dipped in melancholy yet still drenched in beautiful melodies. "Laboratory" and "The Glass Ceiling" are more energetic, the latter of which utilising an uptempo jacking beat but still retaining the emotion that is ever present on the release. "Material" has crisp, acid basslines that linger above brooding undertones as the track embarks along a detailed journey through clever arrangement. More raw and rugged however, is "Data." First there is a relentless jacking version before finishing with an extended version, as hypnotic as it is all enticing.

Although this release is clearly heavily inspired by the original sounds of Chicago house music, Howard's crisp productions give them a fresh vibe that is very much of today. Full of emotion and depth, each track is like a journey through the past but ending up in the present.

Deep House
Review: For those who've already fallen in love with Tevo Howard's distinctive take on Chicago jack, Pandora's Box will no doubt be an essential purchase. In truth, it's an accurate title, with the Chicagoan DJ exploring a variety of his favourite themes over the course of an entertaining hour of dancefloor-centric cuts. Amongst the eight tracks you'll find Italo-influenced electronic house ("Pandora's Box"), synthpop-goes jack (the Underground Mix of "Spend Some Time"), addictive acid ("The Instruction"), smart melodic deepness ("Autumn Spell", "Intersection"), old skool electro-house ("Confusion") and even straightforward Chicago pop (the Pop Mix of "Spend Some Time").

Misty Falls
Review: Rush Hour continues its fine run of releases on a Detroit/Chicago tip with Gene Hunt's Cancemnini EP. A veteran from the Windy City, Mr Hunt (sadly not the same Gene Hunt who plies his trade as a fearsome detective in the Life On Mars TV series) certainly knows his way around a studio. All four tracks on this EP are produced with intricate poise, from the pitch perfect kick on "Gyro Jazz" to the deft use of keys on "Xylo Maze".

16 & Indiana
US Studio
Review: A collaboration between the late, great Ron Hardy and Gene Hunt - who was just a teenager at the time of the recording "Throwback" has stood the test of time. The title track's doubled up snares and lunging acid line are so raw and primal but still so effective, and the kicks so hard that they are guaranteed to have maximum impact. "216 & Indiana" is also based on heavy percussive elements: this time the thundering claps that became Chicago's staple as well as howling analogue riffs that predate the minimal explosion in Detroit. Finally, "US Studio" reveals a blueprint for the deep house that followed from the Windy City, with vintage synths lapping up against the duo's razor-sharp hi-hats and firing drum patterns.

The Long Wait
Review: Releases such as this render the necessity for additional hyperbole useless, as the simple facts involved ensure it will fly off the shelves. KiNK & Neville Watson return after a two year hiatus with their third release for the Rush Hour offshoot Hour House Is Your Rush with two raw visceral cuts that typify their signature Chicago meets Detroit sound. "Metropole" is immediately gratifying, an energising flux of vintage Detroit chords rising and falling in unison with the thumping and obligingly loud kick drum. It's pure peak time sleaze complemented by the analgesic hypnosis that washes over your senses when the flipside track "The Long Wait" unfurls in all its glory. A much rawer beat is doused in increasingly psychedelic circles of concentric melodies that twist with lysergic energy whilst the most devilish of acid basslines throbs beneath. The arsenal of superlatives to describe Rush Hour is rapidly depleting.

A Saturday In November (dub mix)
Review: A masterful return to the Hour House Is Your Rush imprint for Messrs Watson and KiNK, their fourth to date and this time featuring the excellent vocal talents of Hercules Love & Affair's bundle of energy Kim Ann Foxman. Naturally with the addition of vocals, "A Saturday In November" is a less heavyweight assault on your senses than previous releases on the label from this duo, though all of their signature studio flourishes such as raw basslines, emotive chord washes and slick drum programming remain. The accompanying dub version burns hard and will find favour amongst the more discerning dancefloors!

Redline
Review: After the family affair of the last Hour House Is Your Rush twelve, the focus remains in Chicago with Ricardo Miranda stepping up and imploring us to "do the damn thing"! If the Howard collaboration was soaked in emotion, then Miranda's is definitely drenched with sweaty energy as "Floorwax" proves to be an intoxicatingly simple yet effective acid filled odyssey. Miranda seemingly strips things back further on the B Side with "Redline" commencing with little more than a raw throbbing beat which gradually teases out a dizzying acid pulse. Just when your brain has locked into gear, Miranda opts to drop in some utopian strings which are the impulse for a massive shift in rhythmic momentum!

Let Me Go (feat Naughty Wood)
Rottonfunk
Review: Mutant Beat Dance - aka Chicago duo Traxx and Beau Wanzer - are snapped up by Dutch imprint Rush Hour for this 12" via the Hour House Is Your Rush sub-label. Featuring the vocals of Andrew "Naughty" Wood, "Let Me Go" feels like some lost Jamie Principle tune with raw drum hits, sleazy bass and yearning, late night vocals, and is complemented by the equally rough, freeform jacker "Rotten Funk". Both make for a worthy follow-up to Another World, released in the last few days of 2011 on New York label Rong Music.

Raw As Funk
Soul Train
Review: Rush Hour add another footnote to the Juno dossier marked 'label of the year' with this twelve of rough jack material from Mathematics and Yore artiste Marcello Napoletano. There's vintage Chicago vibes aplenty on "Everyday Madness", with the Italian's schizophrenic approach to syncopation imbuing the track with real energy. On the flip, the pretty self explanatory "Raw As Fuck" combines a grinding raw machine funk rhythm with some deeply emotive strings. Drunken keys reverberate around the sonic spaces between the chaotic processions of analogue drum patterns on "Soul Train" before finding a natural groove at the midpoint.
