Review: First released in 1980 via the little-known Pick Up Records, Danish jazz-rockers Ariel's self-titled debut record sees an unlikely reissue via Jazz Room here. A worthy reintroduction of the quintet to the world at large - where before it wasn't well-known at all - it comes after the album was recently hepped to by none other than Brownswood aficionado Gilles Peterson, whose encyclopaedic internal memory bank and capacity to chin-wag served the cascading recollection of the album by Jazz Room label boss Paul Murphy. Now the eight-tracker dazzles us once more, fusing jazz with subtle elements of kraut and kosmische to make for bustling, brimming urban fugs, all hemmed together by a consistent baritone sax, and the vocal pyrotechnics of Hawaiian singer Lei Aloha Moe.

Review: Warren Oree is an acoustic bassist, producer and composer who founded The Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble in Philadelphia in 1979. The adventurous outfit are eclectic and have a far from predictable sound that combines acoustic sounds with African and Middle Eastern influences, a hint of Afro-Cuban Orientalism, spiritual jazz and avant garden flourishes. This album was recorded in 1980 and has a truly worldwide sound that very much fits in with the sound of the current jazz revival. There is cool jazz on 'Wet Walnuts and Whipped Cream', percussive drenched grooves on the title track and much more besides. A real classic.

Blue Mode - "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (3:59)
El Chavo - "Hola Muneca" (2:58)
Review: Blue Mode and El Chavo present two fantastic new cover versions. The A-side is of course one of the biggest tunes of the grunge era, and is here lent a jazzy, funky, groovy alteration by Blue Mode - though it is an ostensible Nirvana cut, the band were influenced by everything from the Gap Band to Louie Louie and a fair smattering of 80s indie here. This production by Chip Wickham mixes a swinging 60s Blue Note vibe and acid jazz refrains, brings it bang-up-to-date with contemporary nu-jazz. Side B is a boogaloo Latin jazz version of the Lonnie Smith track 'Hola Muneca', beloved of the acid jazz era's foremost DJs, and formerly released on a now impossible-to-find 7" single that shifts for crazy prices.

Robert Dubwise Browne - "Sun Goddess"
Dean Fraser - "Mister Magic"
Review: Here's a proper genre fusion for the dancehall heads. On his latest reissue, Robert 'Dubwise' Browne testifies to over 20 years of hitmaking with a standalone 7" edition of his remix of Ramsey Lewis' 'Sun Goddess', first released on Vortex in 2023. Whereas Lewis' original 70s funk version is a sweet and sunkissed headboard-licker with a simple backbeat, Browne prefers to cant things dubwise, swapping the aforementioned out for a phat dotted stomp. Clock the new pairing with Browne's version of Grover Washington's jazz-funk classic 'Mister Magic'.

Jazz Carnival (4:42)
Pacific 707 (4:50)
Review: Since debuting in 2018 with a tremendous cover version of Todd Terje nu-disco fave 'Inspector Norse', Japanese duo Cruisic have proved particularly adept at delivering dancefloor flavoured jazz and jazz-funk takes on classic cuts. Jazz Room boss Paul Murphy has spotted this and has decided to offer-up a double A-side featuring two of his favourites from their slim but impressive catalogue. On the A-side you'll find their 2019 version of Azymuth's 'Jazz Carnival', a breezy, gently pitched down, sun-splashed take that turns it from a high-octane thriller into a carnival-ready jazz-funk shuffler. Turn to the flip for the pair's arguably even better cover of 808 State's 'Pacfific 707', which they successfully re-imagine as a head-nodding Balearic jazz-funk gem. In a word: essential!

Hagalo (4:09)
Camaleon (6:28)
Review: Mike Dogliotti is a legendary Uruguayan keyboardist, best known for his fusion of candombe - a traditional Afro-Uruguayan rhythm - with popular incarnations of jazz, funk, and rock. Though he's been active since the 1970s, he's still able to prove his instrumental mettle with his new 7" double single 'Hagalo/Camaleon', released through the Jazz Room label. 'Hagalo' is a funky and upbeat version, perhaps inspired by Mandrill's 1972 hit of the same name. 'Camaleon', meanwhile, is a cosmic instrumental version of none other than Herbie Hancock's anglicised 'Chameleon', but brings with it a fair more laid-back approach.

Review: Shamek Farrah & Folks's 1978 recording 'La Dee La La' gets a worthy reissue here by Paul Murphy's Jazz Room. It's a high class fusion of funk, Afro, soul and jazz by Strata-east stalwart Farrah on sax, ad legendary trumpet player Malachi Thompson. The world-wide sounds take in Latin tinged sun on 'The White Lady" featuring Sonelius Smith on piano, Township party vibes on the titular cut and rap spiritual highs on 'Along Came Ron Rahsaan' which has Vivian Chandler serving up a wordless delivery that will leave you feeling soul-enriched. originals are hard to find and expensive when you do, so this is a timely reissue.

Review: Carlos Franzetti eventually became a highly successful, Grammy Award-winning composer and producer, but back when he recorded Graffiti in 1977 he was a fresh-faced jazz musician struggling to survive in New York City. While the album sunk without trace in the United States, it became a staple of London's 1980s jazz-dance scene - hence this much-needed reissue from Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records. It remains an excellent album of Latin jazz/funk/soul fusion tracks, with Franzetti's canny piano, synth and electric piano solos rising above brilliant backing tracks (some dancefloor friendly, others wonderfully jazzy and laidback) performed by a fine cast of musicians including Ray Mantilla (percussion), Victor Venegas (bass) and Dick 'Taco' Meza (flute, soprano sax).

Review: Jazz Room Records is the work of legendary London jazz-dance DJ Paul Murphy, so it's perhaps unsurprising that the label's first outing is an essential reissue of one of his personal favourites: Hugo Heredia's spiritually-minded 1976 Latin-Jazz fusion masterpiece, "Mananita Pampera". Although it begins with a dense and psychedelic collage of Heredia's breathy flute playing, the album's genius lies in its' combination of heavy Latin percussion, skittish jazz drums and the bright and breezy instrumentation atop (piano, double bass and Heredia on sax). Of course, there are a few slower, laidback cuts to be found dotted across the album, but for the most part it's a sweaty, excitable dancefloor excursion that's been a staple of Murphy's sets since the 1980s.

For the first in the UK, they now release an album that has been specially put together to showcase their sounds on the world stage. It's been assembled by Colin Curtis, who hosts the Worldwide FM show Jazz Dance Fusion and has long been introducing these sorts of sounds to us mortals in the West. Colin's jazz Ally Paul Murphy of Jazz Room Records was also involved in the project and all eight cuts are dense fusions of broken beat and jazz that challenge convention but are also accessible and hugely enjoyable.

Review: It's always worth checking the reissues offered up by Jazz Room Records, not least because there are few people more knowledgeable on the dancefloor friendly end of jazz than boss man Paul Murphy. Predictably, he's scored another coup here by securing the rights to reissue Jazzberry Patch's 1977 debut - a private-press jazz-funk gem that's long been a "holy grail" amongst collectors. Joined by virtuoso organist Mike Longo (who supplies liner notes) and a handful of guest percussionists, the Californian trio lay down a series of effortlessly funky, percussive and solo-rich workouts that should delight jazz-funk fans everywhere. The piece de resistance is undoubtedly the epic title track, which grooves, bobs and weaves over 20 mesmerising minutes.

Kaoru Iiyoshi & The Whip - "Soul Tripper" (3:20)
Alberto Baldan Bembo - "Abat Jour" (2:35)
Review: For the second missive on his Jazz Room Records imprint, legendary London DJ Paul Murphy has chosen to reissue two quality - and, we should add, obscure -slabs of Latin-fired dancefloor jazz. For us the real highlight is Kaoru Liyoshi and The Whip's A-side cut, "Soul Tripper", a breezy, sun-kissed chunk of lazy and hazy boosa-jazz that features some superb organ solos. If you want something a little more energetic, Alberto Baldan Bembo's "Abat Jour" ticks the box. It was originally released on the soundtrack to an obscure Italian film and fully deserves a single release - it's a jaunty Latin jazz delight!

Review: Vibraphonist Khan Jamal has made many fine albums over the years, though few are quite as revered within the jazz scene as Infinity, a self-released set from 1984 that has been near impossible to find for years. While Jamal's fluid and attractive vibraphone playing is given an airing throughout the album, it never dominates the sound space, with the storied members of his backing sextet - including scene legends Byard Lancaster (alto sax, flute) and drummer Sunny Murray - all being given a chance to shine. Musically, it sits somewhere between spiritual jazz, jazz-funk and Latin jazz, with hectic dancefloor numbers (see the superb 'The Angry Young Man') being joined by a wealth of deeper, more laidback compositions.

Review: Jazz saxophonist Tony Lavorgna, sometimes known as Captain Bad, recorded Chameleon with the St Thomas Jazz Quartet in 1982. The title track is a cover of Herbie Hancock's classic from Head Hunters, given a fresh lick on this superlative album of incredible renditions of long time favourites. Ray Charles' 'Georgia On My Mind', War's 'The World Is A Ghetto' and Dave Brubeck's 'Take The 'A' Train' all get a look in, given a soulful treatment which goes down very smooth indeed. On the strength of these, it's a shame the group never recorded more music together, covers or otherwise.

Review: Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records has offered up fresh pressings of some seriously rare jazz records of late, including some that will be new to even the most dedicated of dusty-fingered diggers. Michel Magne's Le Monocle Rit Jaune is a great example of this. It was originally released on seven-inch single in 1964 and contains a quartet of tunes featured on the soundtrack to a French comedy film of the same name. The EP-opening title track is our pick: a jaunty, club-ready, flute-sporting jazz number that sounds a little like Dave Brubeck classic 'Take Five'. The other three compositions are a little cheekier and quirkier, with more obvious roots in cinematic comedy, but no less inspired in their own way.

Review: For the latest offering on his jazz-dance friendly Jazz Room Records imprint, Paul Murphy has decided to mine the back catalogue of Japanese jazz-funk trio Nautilus, and specifically the organ-loving combo's 2015 album Nautiloid Matter. Kicking things off on the A-side is the band's version of Gil Scott-Heron's 1972 classic 'Lady Day & John Coltrane'. Featuring fine lead vocals from Kei Owada and plenty of the band's trademark electric piano solos, their take on the track is far more dancefloor focussed than Scott-Heron's original, with much more energetic drumming and fast-fingered bass guitar. Turn to the flip for their take on Jessica Lauren's acid-jazz era fusion classic 'Serengeti', which sees Nautilus add infectious, life-affirming Fender Rhodes solos to another killer jazz-funk groove.

On DJ Koco's version, we hear crisp drumming and strange synthetic vocaloids, both of which make this cut an instant favourite for any mid-tempo selector seeking a weirdo-live feel. The B-side is no less beguiling, completely reworking the core motifs of the song into a trembly, retro-tonal, bitcrushed electro version. Phat!

While he guested on hundreds of records and was still playing a couple of years before his death at 84 last year, Jones only ever released a handful of albums under his own name. Arguably the best - and certainly most popular amongst Britain's legion of jazz-dancers - was 1972's "El Maja", credited to the Robin Jones Sextet. A scintillating fusion of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazillian rhythms laden with sprightly woodwind and brass sounds, jaunty piano, jazz-funk Rhodes sounds and notable nods towards rhythm and blues, the hard-to-find album has now been reissued by legendary London jazz DJ Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records imprint. It should be an essential purchase for anyone who loves Latin jazz.

It became a big hit online after he posted it on YouTube, so Jazz Room Records boss Paul Murphy asked if he could release it on wax. It's a superb version that successfully reinvents the Stranglers' gem as a quality jazz tune. Equally as impressive is his flipside version of the Police's "Walking on the Moon", which is as deep, atmospheric, enticing and intoxicating as they come. In fact, it could well be better than the in-demand A-side, and that's saying something.

Golden Brown (3:10)
Walking On The Moon (3:28)
Review: This one is such an evergreen classic that it is never long between reissues. The Take Vibe EP is musician Laurence Mason and he here mashes together the sounds of Dave Brubeck and Dave Greenfield of The Stranglers - it started on YouTube and got over one million hits, so then made it to vinyl and keeps selling out. On the flip is a romantic, late night jazz version of The Police classic 'Walking On The Moon', making this a real collector's item.

Shakey Jake (4:32)
Night Dream (6:41)
Review: This is a 7" by double bassist and producer Takumi Moriya, in collaboration with his studio band Black Nation. Two tracks of soulful jazz fusion, coming as a homage to the legendary Joe McPhee, appear on this 7": 'Shakey Jake' and 'Night Dream'. Both flaunt Moriya's interpretive talents, as he breathes fresh life into McPhee's ultra-energetic original number, all while proffering his own original cut on the B-side too.

Review: Paul Murphy's commitment to reissuing obscure, hard-to-find and sought-after Latin jazz albums is impressive. The latest high-quality album to get the treatment (courtesy of his excellent Jazz Room label) is Tata Vasquez & His Orchestra's 1979 set Ecstasy, a glorious New York fusion of salsa, Latin jazz, boogaloo and funk most famous for the two-part 'Suite Gauracho' - a piano-sporting, flute-laden affair that has variously become a favourite of both Balearic and nu-jazz DJs. Both versions are wonderful, but there's plenty of other highlights across the album, including a string of ultra-percussive affairs that have long been favourites of the jazz-dancers who flock to hear Murphy DJ.

Walpataca - "Caliente" (5:27)
Vienna Art Orchestra - "Un Poco Loco" (6:44)
Review: Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records serve up two underground dance floor hits from the London circuit here. Latin supergroup Wild And Infectious's 'Caliente' takes care of the a-side and has banging piano riffs and heavy bass laid down by Descarga originator Cachao, all run through with some superb driving vibes from Tany Gil with a big percussion meltdown from Walfredo De Los Reyes added for good measure. ON the reverse, The Vienna Art Orchestra serve up a great new version of a Bud Powell classic.

Review: Jazz Room Records is back with another high class reissue of an album that is considered to be a grail by those who know. The story goes that back in the late 70s in the Seattle area of the Pacific North West, Danny Ward & Reality were an oft called upon funky jazz collective for anyone throwing college or hardcore funk parties. Rather than just serving up covers of the day's big hits they offered proper musical trips though more considered fair from artists like George Benson. This album catches them at their best on one such mid-week gig in the summer of 1977.
