At Last
I Just Want To Make Love To You
Review: Etta's career-defining debut album At Last showed the world what she was capable of. Unfettered breadth spaced over three 45s, delivered by Chess off-shoot Argo, each track explored a different style from blues to jazz to doo-wop to smoking soul. Complete with her two most legendary songs ("At Last" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You") the real beauty is in the less-celebrated numbers such as the carnal sensuous "Seven Day Fool", the chop-slapping gospel power of "Hold On Me" and the sleazy guitar lines and time signature switches of "Spoonful". A serious piece of soul history.

Review: Between 1988 and 2000, the shadowy crew behind the Strip label put out six volumes of "Las Vegas Grind", a compilation series celebrating sleazy - and usually undeniably obscure - rhythm and blues, rock and roll and novelty lounge records from the 1950s and '60s. Here the series returns thanks to Jazzman, who somehow managed to to track down the digger responsible - and his eccentric record collection. From skewed surf-rock and low-slung rhythm and blues to comedy big band swing, rousing proto-funk and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" style madcap stompers, the album offers a whirlwind romp through some seriously good - and not to mention especially silly - gems rescued from dollar bins, dumpsters and yard sales the World over. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

Review: 2016: the year the world outside of Belgium finally recognized the cult of popcorn, a subculture that began in Antwerp where soul fans would seek out the rarest and finest big band style soul cuts from the 50s and 60s. Covers, rarities, b-sides... Just like northern soul but the sexier jams. The second big compendium to celebrate the genre this year, Jazzman have curated a fantastic package that ranges from the jazzy swing of Bellino's "Boss Bossa Nova" to the burlesque sultriness and sexy humour of Bobby Hendricks' "I Want That" by way of the really roomy reverberated finish on Johnny Guitar Watson's "Wait A Minute" and Early Grant's organ-blasting twist on "Fever". A great snapshot into a cult scene that resonates with anyone who enjoys soulful music. Pass the popcorn!

Review: Jazzman's Jukebox Mambo series continues to be an authoritative exploration of mid-Century, Afro-Latin accented rhythm & blues. On this fourth edition the selections range from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, capturing a unique cultural moment in the post-war era when Afro-Latin rhythms were infusing the music and engendering new forms in pop music of the day. From jazz, gospel and doo hop to calypso, blues and rock & roll, there's a veritable feast of styles on offer here, all expertly sequenced and sure to teach even a seasoned listener a thing or two.

Review: Master compilation maker Greasy Mike is back with a fourth volume of his characterful selections. This one once again is another action packed and full flavour array of wigged out rhythms and psyched out funk sounds. The label calls it "14 Frantic Flippers Fraught with Frivolous Fun-Filled Frolics" and the tunes sure do have big personalities, wild laughter, sleazy low slung grooves and big steamy horns. Names like Adolphus Bell & The Up Starts, The Fabulous Continentals and Bobby Bunny & The Jackrabbits feature amongst many more niche jazz-adjacent sounds from the 50s and 60s.

Review: Here comes a fresh crop of 50s-60s rock n' roll/rhythm & blues by way of a compilation of rare, obscure tracks from their respective golden era(s), the 'Chinese Takeaway' - selected by Greasy Mike, DJ, record collector and Jazzman label owner. The comp flaunts the wild and diverse wildernesses and recesses of rock'n'roll, from surf and garage to doo-wop and soul - but comes with a far-flung twist, prioritizing songs with influences from Chinese music and culture.

Review: Jazzman have been capitalising on their kinship with revered digger Greasy Mike by offering him a series of compilations which shine a light on some of the wildly rare records contained in his considerable archives. Following prior themes from Middle-Eastern Harem and Shipwrecked On A Tropical Island, Mike turns his attention to "the sublime, seductive sound of the smooth and sultry songstress." You won't find any household names here, but rather a cast of mesmerising, formidable singers set to heartworn jazz ballads. These are no wallflowers and there's more than enough grit to go with their grace, making this a fantastic collection for anyone who savours the sound of 50s and 60s divas with something to say.

Review: The title of this one alone is enough to just about give you the creeps. Fortunately, the music within this brand new series from the Jazzman crew is hella enjoyable: it is a fine collection of " the lowest of the lowball schlock n' roll 45s never known to exist" all of which have been pillaged from the endless musical reverse of Greasy Mike who has finally opened up his caverns. Mike's own top Halloween tunes are included such as 'Zombie Walks', 'Night Sweats,'' The Chiller,' 'Prowler' and 'Screaming Vampire.' It's a left-of-centre but essential rock and roll collection.

Review: Jazzman Records' curatorial moniker Greasy Mike delivers a seventh compilation in his eponymous beatnik jazz series. At The Beatnik Cafe follows up former visits to the Tropical Island, the Chinese Takeaway, and the Halloween haunted house for a trip back in time and place to 1950s New York, netting the sonic essence of the Beat generation. Predominantly comprising swing, bebop and hard bop recorded during and at the turn of the following decade, we're smitten at the likes of Harvey Anderson's 'Monday Night At 8PM', The Seven Arts Beat Society's 'New York Havana', and Cindy Laine's 'Whispering Wind', all of which amount to prototypical, quiet cafe-bound storms, and the perfect complements for free-assocative poetry composition and goatee grooming.
