  6. I Will Surely Come Again
Review: On its original release in the 1980s, Azanyah's The One was only ever issued as a private press - meaning copies now change hands for upwards of $1000. Listening back to this remastered reissue, it's easy to see why it's held in such high regard. Offering a decidedly spiritual take on jazz infused with elements of folk and African music, The One offers a British take on the work of John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders with an uplifting twist. There's plenty to make you smile, from the anthemic uplift of "Guiding Light" and snaking clarinet of "Praise", to the freestyle space-jazz of "I Will Surely Come Again".

  1. Madeline Bell - "That's What Friends Are For" (3:01)
  2. Alan Parker - "That's What Friends Are For" (3:01)
Review: Out of print since 2007, Jazzman do the right thing and come through with a much-needed repress of this 7" burner from Madeline Bell and Alan Parker. "That's What Friends Are For" originates from The Voice Of Soul, the 1976 album session musician Madeline Bell recorded with veteran library musician Alan Parker for his Themes International label. The album itself remains a highly prized (and priced) rarity for collectors, but Jazzman were able to license the irresistibly catchy and soulful samba of "That's What Friends Are For" for its debut 7" appearance. Vocal up top, killer instrumental version below; if you missed out first time around, don't make the same mistake again.

  1. Today All Day
  2. Get Into Your Life
Review: "Get Into Your Life", despite being a masterful piece of late 70's Soul, failed to hit and sank without a trace at the time. Since then it has been a big track in soul clubs in the US and UK. This track has all the right ingredients - pleading vocal, soaring strings and a bumping beat. The b-side is more of a mid-tempo affair, in the style of the best old 'ravers' tunes as spun on the soul scene. Both sides are ideal for today's soulful dancefloors.

  2. Humility (8:50)
  3. A Prayer For (9:05)
  4. Dervish (6:21)
Review: On his latest full-length excursion, British jazzman Nat Birchall has taken the bold move of replacing a piano with a harmonium. The move is reflective of his growing interest in the drone-heavy sound of Indian classical music, with the Harmonium's wheezing, modulating, held-note sound adding an authentically meditative feel to the album's raga-inspired spiritual jazz movements. Naturally, there are harmonium solos, too, and these dizzying, accordion-esque interludes, combined with freestyle drum solos, Birchall's distinctive sax playing and adventurous double bass parts, help to create a genuinely psychedelic and spiritual mood. It's adventurous stuff, but also hugely engaging and entertaining.

Review: Contemporary jazz saxophonist Nat Birchall prefers to do quality over quantity. The talented instrumentalist first appeared in 1999 but has only released a handful of album to date, with the latest two - including this new album - coming out on London's excellent Jazzman imprint. Birchall really does make that sax scream and suffer, and the opener "Nicha's Dance" has to contain the best sax solo that we've heard in a long while on these charts. "A Prayer For" is moodier but nonetheless brilliant in its execution, while the lead tune "Akhenaten" is funkier and down to earth, leaving "Many Blessings" to deliver the late night G&T vibes. Chapeau..!

Review: You've got to hand it to Jazzman Records; their dedication to unearthing and releasing killer funk and jazz is simply unsurpassed. With this issue of Barbados group The Blue Rhythm Combo, the label plucks selective album and singles tracks for a triple pack vinyl edition that introduces our ears to rare Caribbean funk gems infused with tropical tight rhythms, fatback drums, heavy bass and punchy brass stabs. There are dope jams galore, most notably a superb version of "Black Water Gold" penned by Louis Villery and made famous by Africa Music Machine back in 1973. A mixed bag of instrumental and vocal tracks and an essential purchase if you have a healthy interest in funk.

Review: Blimey....not one single, not two but three 45's housed as a triple pack of essential re-issued releases from New Orleans label Seven B via the mighty Jazzman label. This package picks out possibly the rarest and best tracks from the label which traverses the genres of breakbeat funk, Northern Soul and original Rhythm n Blues flavour. One highlight for us here at Juno towers is the infectious "Something Out Of Nothing" from Lenny McDaniel & The New Era which starts off with a stompy organ and fierce brass section before a thumping bass and fat beat drums take over the proceedings. Elsewhere there's the amazing Roger & The Gypsies jam "Pass The Hatchett" which starts off with a growling bass, picked rhythm guitar before Roger drops those immortal lines.''Let Me Chop It.. Let Me Chop It'' over b-boy drums. Pure gold!

  1. So Very Hard To Make It (Without You)
  2. So Very Hard To Make It (Without You) (instrumental)
Review: There's something about the guitar line that introduces "So Very Hard To Make It (Without You)", not just the notes but the way it's played, that tells you you're about to hear something special. Way before the song has even begun, it's subtle, indefinable qualities like this that separate good music from bad, and which also separate merely good music from that which is excellent. Indeed, we'd like to think that this is a truly magnificent piece of deep soul. Jazzman Records presents this top Paul Burton release.

  2. Why Can't I Have You
Review: Super-rare Latin funk alert! This is one of Antonio's earlier recorded works before adopting the stage name Tony Amaro shortly after this was released in 71 on Universal International. The title track is a heart-hitting slice of soul as Antonio paints a picture of dignified poverty in a manner that's not far off Marvin Gaye. His true Latin spirit comes through more on the B as "Why Can't I Have You" as he croons with multi-lingual longing over a soft organ and light guitar arrangement. Beautiful.

  2. Test Drive (12" version)
  3. Get It Off The Ground (7" version)
Review: 'Get It Off The Ground' has been a big spin down at Deep Funk for years - a low-slung soul/boogie monster that works every time and crosses the divide between funk, disco and 80s sounds. As a bonus you get the 7" version and the full 12" mix - double the pleasure! 'Test Drive' is a modern soul anthem, much sought after and with original copies fetching large sums. Joe's insightful lyrics push the analogy of test driving a car with casual sex about as far as taste allows, and possibly further. The boogie grooves are reminiscent of the best the 80s had to offer - clubs full of chrome and glass, slap bass and other delights that cannot fail to rock the floor! Enjoy the next instalment of Jazzman 12"s for your dancing pleasure!
