Review: In conjunction with London’s Jukebox Jam club night we bring you regular doses of the wildest, rawest original Rhythm and Blues of the ‘50s and early ‘60s on DJ friendly collectable 45rpm format. Linked by a sequential catalogue numbering system, each release will also boast a unique label design and title, making them unlike any other reissue on the market.

Our first release on the Jukebox Jam subsidiary showcased the production talents of New Orleans’ finest Dave Bartholomew on Rose Mitchell’s haunting rendition of ‘Baby Please Don’t Go’ (now sold out everywhere!). For Jukebox Jam number four it’s time for Dave himself to take centre stage with two solo sides from his prolific spell with Imperial Records, both with some distinctly Latin/Caribbean seasoning, hence the naming of this label ‘Mambo’.

You’d be hard pushed to find a record which sounds more N’Awlins than ‘Shrimp and Gumbo’ – a raucous percussion heavy party starter perfect for any Creole Carnival. And in fact, perfect for any party, be it a full house at your local supper club dance, neighbourhood jukebox joint or your back garden bar-b-que!

The flip-side is an earlier recording from Dave, and again one which could only have come from NOLA, and could only really have been made by Bartholomew himself. His lyrics might be in jest but the band certainly aren’t messing around and they pull off a sound so authentic that you’d imagine it must surely be Cuban players responsible. All in all a nice package then, two bags of Mambo-Mardi Gras Gris-Gris sure to keep you safe from all manner of Voodoo ill will!

36-22-36 (2:53)
St James Infirmary (2:26)
Review: Jazzman's Juke Box Jams series continues unabated to offer up those one-shot killers from the tangled history of jazz, R&B and soul - essential nuggets worth repeatedly popping dimes in the slot for. Here, it's the turn of Bobby Bland's "36-22-36", a heavy swinging and insanely catchy blast straight from 1962. Bland's voice is a perfect balance - cool as ice, but cracked around the edges - while the chorus line chants don't need a minute to get under your skin until you're singing along. "St James Infirmary" on the flip is a more downcast affair - one to drown your sorrows to, but certainly not the bottom of the bottle, as those hard stepping horns attest.

Miss Fanny Brown
Review: Two classic and storming early R&B sides from Roy Brown on Jazzman Records offshoot label Juke Box Jams. "Mr. Hound Dog's Back In Town" was Roy's killer vocal and upfront guitar-licked retort to Big Mama Thornton's massive breakthrough hit "Hound Dog". On the flipside "Fannie Brown Got Married" kicks off with an infectious rhythm and a great main vocal with alternate answering band chorus and main floor saxophone. This is timeless stuff.

I Won't Hurt You Anymore
Review: Raw, hard and guttural blues here from obscure female Chicago singer Frances Burr on Jazzman's uber-collectable Juke Box Jams label. It's backed up by a hard-driving, pepped-up and rowdy KJ Trio, resulting in a piano banging, sax honking, drums clattering dinked 45!

Everything Will Be Alright
Review: Jeanne Demetz's killer "Calypso Daddy" was cut in the 1950s but never actually saw a commercial release, so for collectors it's a completely new discovery. Perhaps it was deemed too unusual or exotic for mass consumption, or perhaps it was shelved as the bandleader responsible, Johnny Alston, was experiencing a downturn in popularity after enjoying success through the 1940s. Whatever the reason, we're glad it's finally seeing the light of day; a killer Latin rhythmic pattern, great instrumentation and seductive Calypso-esque vocal combine to great effect. On the flipside "Everything Will Be Alright" starts off with a bluesy boogie woogie piano and walking double basslines before Jeanne delivers the full weight of the song with the catchy titled chorus.

As Wild As You Can Be
Review: Mary Ann Fisher delivers a downtrodden 1950s R&B superb growlin' vocal performance on this swinging blues number on Jazzman's sub label Juke Box Jam. Mary Ann subsequently became well known as one of the Raelettes (Ray Charles's all female backing vocal troupe). On the flipside the pace is raised a bar as Mary Ann gruffly complains about her lover's wily ways with a foot stompin' R&B rocker.

If You Ain't Got No Bread (You Might As Well Stay Home In Bed) (edit)
Review: "If You Ain't Got No Bread (You Might Aswell Stay At Home In Bed)" is a quirky R&B dancer with a story that we can all relate to - financial woe and unpaid bills. There's some great backing too, with an upfront drum kit and rasping brass section complementing the story with infectious riffs. As the original version begins with an elongated spoken intro which sees the landlord, car hire man and then girlfriend come knocking for cash, the label has kindly included an edited version which cuts straight to the chase for optimised club play potential.

Just A Little Bit Of Everything
Perdido Street
Review: With a CV that includes Fats Domino, BB King, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Tom Waits, Herb Hardesty is one of the greatest living sax players. And he's still nailing it at the grand old age of 88. Two new instrumentals, both "Just A Little Bit Of Everything" and "Perdido Street" rolls with an authentic jazzy swing that sings to all eras and decades. The former swoons and sways with a tightly plucked R&B motif while the latter is a more full frontal affair but heavy horn leads and beautiful bluesy piano twinkles. Awesome stuff.

Hit The Road Jack
Review: ''Louisiana'' from Percy Mayfield is lifted from the forthcoming Jukebox Mambo compilation on Juke Box Jams/Jazzman Records and boasts a velvety, smooth blues infused vocal set against a backdrop of a jerky Creole rumba and a sultry saxophone riff. On the flipside is the original demo from Percy of the all time classic and much covered "Hit The Road Jack".
