Vision Of Love (Carl Craig c2 edit)
Vision Of Love (Carl Craig c2 bonus edit)
Review: The speed at which Bicep have risen through the ranks is staggering. Two years ago they were bedroom bloggers; now, they're among the most hyped producers around. Here, they pop up on Kevin Saunderson's KMS label with "Vision of Love", the typically tough and wide-eyed chunk of US house revivalism that originally surfaced on their eponymous label last year. It's devilishly simple, with a few key ingredients - big piano riffage, subtle strings and booming beats - being whisked together to produce a peak time delight whilst the cheeky usage Inner City vocal samples is what has lead to it being reissued through KMS. Carl Craig edits, delivering a version that expertly teases out the piano and vocal, via a few well-placed drops and effects. It's this version that hits home hardest, but we wouldn't expect anything less.

Track 1 (5:22)
Track 2 (6:02)
Track 3 (4:47)
Review: If you want to talk about genuinely timeless house music, there's no better place to start than with Chez Damier and this imperial classic from 1993. It's been repressed a few times over the years, and whether it's the turn of the millennium or 2020, these tracks just never age. "Track 2" is of course the one everyone remembers - those iconic chords washing in and out of the mix and the flamboyant strings on high are house music standards that he set right here in the early days. "You Ain't Dancing" is the last thing you're going to need to say the second you pop this evergreen classic on the decks.

Help Myself (Carl Craig remix)
Review: As one of the earliest Chez Damier cuts to see the light of day, "I Never Knew Love" is more than welcome to a reissue to reach a fresh set of ears needing schooling in the ways of true deep house. It's an all-star cast here from artists in their youth, from MK's club mix of the star title in all its unmistakable MIDI Sax-ing glory, through to Carl Craig in a breezy piano breakbeat mood that's utterly charming in its simplicity. The real pick though is the "Change Up" mix of "I Never Knew Love" with its stripped back drums and spellbinding chord-led breakdown.

Review: What can be said here that has not been before about this seminal and timeless Detroit house classic? Instead of preaching to the choir, we'll just state the obvious. On this always welcome re-issue, it features the original mixes, in the form of "Can U Feel It (club vocal mix)" and "Can U Feel It (dub mix)" in all their funky, uplifting and soulful glory. But most importantly it features what was probably the most played mix of the track, out of any: Marc 'MK' Kinchen's infamous "New York Dub" with the trademark vocal cut ups, organ stabs and its infectious, swing fuelled shuffle. Legendary stuff right here!

Warp
The Human Bond
Heavenly (original 12" mix)
World Of Deep (original 12" mix)
Review: Don Kevin Saunderson's legendary KMS imprint has gone through a bit of a revival as of late. With some of its most sought-after releases being reissued with new mastering and pressed onto better quality vinyl than the ones from the 90's, your bank account won't have to go through as much of a shock any more! For this latest number, Saunderson's own E-Dancer project is unearthed and re-booted. This was the man's more jacking side and what is probably our favourite of all his various projects - straight up Motor City funk for extraterrestrial beings..! "Warp" is one of Saunderson's best grooves, where a shuffling percussion meets epic synths and gnarly rave stabs, while "The Human Bond" is one of those tunes that will tear up any dancefloor thanks to its swinging drums and brooding bassline. The B-side is just as magnificent, with "Heavenly" and "World Of Deep" representing the some of the finest US house tunes ever made. Highly recommended!

World Of Deep (Carl Craig mix)
Pump The Move (Kenny Larkin mix)
Heavenly (Juan Atkins remix)
The Move (D-Wynn mix)
Review: Originally dropped in 1998, Kevin Saunderson's E Dancer project is the next in line for some KMS reissue love with the original release of the Heavenly LP being spread out over two parts this time around. In the first half, we get treated to the stirring bass growl and spiritual pad work of Carl Craig as he remixes "World Of Deep" into a brooding house masterpiece. Kenny Larkin brings the most brittle drums possible on his version of "Pump The Move", hammering the box beats without ditching on pitch perfect Motor City synths. On his remix of "Heavenly" Juan Atkins is at his oddball electro best, creating a jungle of freaky sounds in which to turn out a beautiful floor rocker. That leaves it to D-Wynn to finish off by remixing "The Move" into a heavily swung funker with some seriously strung out synths.

Inner City - "Good Life" (Recreated mix)
Inner City - "Big Fun" (Kevins E Dancer dub)
Inner City - "Till We Meet Again" (C2 remix)
E Dancer - "Velocity Funk"
Review: KMS continues to capitalise on its considerable legacy with the bumper compilation toasting 25 years of service to Detroit techno, dropping number five in the vinyl reissue series. There's no faulting the prowling menace of Kevin Saunderson's E Dancer dub of "Big Fun", while Carl Craig's version of "Till We Meet Again" is an exercise in restraint applied to big room dynamics, coolly escalating to an anthemic climax. The EP gets rounded off in heavyweight fashion with the rip-roaring early hardcore stylings of E Dancer's "Velocity Funk", which rolls in the most ravey of fashions despite being crafted in 1997.

Review: Detroit legend Kevin Saunderson has been actively reissuing some of the very best releases from his mythical KMS imprint, a label which has both shaped the way dance music is heard and been active for close to thirty years now. Among his many guises over the decades, his Keynotes project has to be one of our favourites, particularly for its raw and playful tone. "Let's Let's Dance" is an absolute monster on the dancefloor and contains those classic Detroit melodies that'll ring in your heads for days. Funky, slightly dark but wholly fun. Don't miss.

Triangle Of Love (Derrick May dub mix)
Triangle Of Love (Master Reese radio mix)
Triangle Of Love (Master Reese instrumental)
Review: As KMS continues its mission to unearth the most sought after gems from its early years, so this gem from Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson sees the light of day once more in all its rough-hewn, soulful glory. Derrick May's dub leads the way with its woozy bass synth, placing the uncredited vocal at the front of the mix and letting the beats fall tough but loose. Meanwhile Kevin Saunderson's Reese version fills in the gaps with longer synth lines and a more balanced set of drums, although there's not too much deviation between the two versions. Either way it's a window into the earliest days of Detroit techno, when it hadn't moved too far from its house influences.

Review: The KMS reissue programme series continues to gather momentum, focusing here on Kevin Saunderson's debut 12" under the Reese guise and a record that has inspired countless basslines over the years. First released all the way back in 1988 and Saunderson's Incognito label, this 12" has been fully remastered for 2014 ears and contains the original, dub and acapella versions of the cult classic "Just Want Another Chance" with THAT bassline sounding all the more influential. There's also a grip of five killer rhythm tools on the flip! If you don't already own this slice of Detroit techno history do not pass up this chance!

How To Play Our Music (bonus beat)
Review: Those new to the sounds of classic Detroit house and techno that are left a bit nonplussed by continual reference to "Reese basslines" are advised to school themselves in this reissue of the Reese & Santonio's The Sound. Initially surfacing on Kevin Saunderson's KMS label back in 1987, it's fair to say that the impact of all three tracks here has not lessened at all in the ensuing twenty seven years (!). The first of several collaborative releases between Kevin Saunderson and Santonio Echols under the name, it's the title track on The Sound that features that snaking bassline and the rawness of the production still packs a real punch.

Review: The KMS reissue series continues apace with another gem from the Reese & Santonio canon in the shape of Bounce Your Body To The Box! Listening through this 12", the first thing that hits you is, can you believe this was originally released in 1988? The first pressing came with the Power Hit and Smooth Groove mixes, which on the 2004 reissue were replaced with Mike Hitman Wilson and Kevin 'Master Reese' Saunderson mixes. Ten years later we're treated to the same, only with bonus a bonus Master Reese remix of the B-sides "Force Field" and May Day mix to the infamous "The Sound". Good music never dies.

Science Of Numbers (6:43)
Tear Drops Of Yesterday (5:27)
Review: As examples of quintessential early Detroit techno go, this jam from Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Chris Nazuka ranks pretty high up there, whether they were from Chicago or not. The "Optimystic Mix" of "Mood" is the winner, pulling off a more subtle hit compared to other tracks of the era, rolling and deft in the percussion, and balancing a rich palette of melodic tones that work in perfect harmony for an emotive slice of old-skool techno. The "Metaphysical Mix" lets the heart-wrenching pads and keys drift in ambient bliss, which is as worthy an alternative mix as you could wish for. "Science Of Numbers" gets into more ravey territory with its discordant stabs and flecks of acid, while "Teardrops Of Yesterday" brings the hi-tech soul to the fore with just the faintest hint of rhythm in amongst the plush notes.
