Review: Trying to keep up with Nils Frahm's discography is nothing short of dizzying. We struggle to think of anyone who can put out so many long form albums without letting the quality suffer a little, yet the German composer seems to be incapable of doing anything other than the finest quality work, laying claim to a back catalogue of piano tracks which can be sad, reflective, poignant, innovative, captivating, or euphoric, and always impossible to forget.

He's done so much, in fact, that he's still unearthing parts of his oeuvre people haven't really heard before. As is the case here. Old New Friends is as fitting a title as they get, with everything here first recorded between 2009 and this year, representing what the artist describes as "an anatomy of all my ways of thinking musically and playing." Simply put, if you like even just a little of what you've heard before, this is essential.

Review: Ambient and neo-classical pioneer Nils Frahm's Music For Animals is, amazingly for someone as prolific as he, his first fresh studio material since 2018's All Melody and 2019's associated All Encores. It is also his first work on the new label he has co-founded with his manager and it plays out over three immersive hours that are quite different to his previous work. It doesn't make use of his famous piano skills but is a mediative and spacious record that allows room to think. Despite the length of it, this is a record worth giving your full attention.

Review: The Berlin-based Moses Yoofee Trio's debut mini-album 'Ocean' solidifies their rising status in the jazz scene. Consisting of pianist/keyboardist/producer Moses Yoofee, bassist Roman Klobe-Baranga, and drummer Noah Furbringer, the trio's dynamic blend of jazz, RnB, hip hop, and soul reflects their diverse influences. Recorded swiftly at Berlin's Brewery Studios and mixed by Tytus Lesczcynski, Ocean captures the trio's spontaneous and refined performances. The title track is a deliciously frantic piece, while 'Minor Issues' grows increasingly ecstatic. 'At Ease' offers restrained complexity, and 'Fragile' showcases a hypnotic rhythm rooted in hip-hop. The lush 'Richmond; starts with a low-strung groove before escalating to an energetic climax. Moses' exceptional keyboard skills, Roman's fluid bass lines and Noah's eloquent drum patterns shine throughout the album, demonstrating the trio's sophisticated style and the deep musical synergy they share. This mini-album, available on all digital platforms, precedes a European tour, promising more terrific live performances.

Review: Anoushka Shankar, the renowned British-Indian-American sitar player, producer, and composer, shares her first live album since 2001's Live At Carnegie Hall. Between Us... marks her debut with the German label Leiter, featuring material from four solo albums and one previously unreleased track. This album has Shankar's collaborative spirit in full glory, beginning from her early performances alongside her father, Ravi Shankar. Between Us... features Shankar's regular collaborator, Manu Delago, a master of the Hang (hand pan), and Holland's Metropole Orkest, directed by the esteemed conductor and arranger Jules Buckley. Recorded in 2018 during a short series of shows in the Netherlands, the album captures the vibrant energy and synergy of these performances. Shankar fondly recalls the concerts, highlighting the unique experience of performing with an orchestra where the audience's energy was palpable. This dynamic interaction brought a fresh and fun element to the orchestral setting. The album offers listeners a glimpse into a harmonious and exhilarating musical world.

Ambient/Drone
Review: Otto A. Totland returns with his first new album since 2021's Companion. The Norwegian composer and self-taught pianist - who also performs as one half of cult ambient-classical-drone duo Deaf Center - shares the beautiful sixteen-track album, Exin, flaunting a unique co-production by none other than Nils Frahm at his studio in the German capital's famed Funkhaus complex. Exin follows a trilogy of solo piano records that began with 2014's Pino. Totland's musical miniatures are as emotionally eloquent as they are technically elegant, with this latest set proving no exception; ranging from solo waltzes to sublime progressive jigs.
