Review: Multi-instrumentalist and composer Naliah Hunter's debut, 'Spells', is a much-needed slice of ambient fantasy. The project began as an "exercise in reclamation" over her own musical motivations, and resulted in a 6-track ritual in which each piece represents a different kind of magic spell.

Like protective water, air and fire charms, Hunter takes on many incantatory roles. She is a vocalist, harpist, and synth player. Her harp, in particular, takes centre stage; the calming wind spell 'Quiet Light', for example, is an embellishment of scale flourishes and dangling chimes.

Hunter likens her studio to an altar, taking ritualistic care to light candles and incense while creating. Like the track 'Talisman' - with sprinklings of midrange tones, relieved breaths and interpretive semi-lyrics - her music is intended for healing. A chunk of the album's proceeds are being given to the Loveland Foundation, which provides therapy for young black women.

Like beautiful but dissolving memories, every track fades out only after around two minutes, like the effusive wispiness of an apprentice wizard's practice. Speaking to KEXP, Hunter noted that her 'spells' had the express purpose of "creating locations away from here"; they are specifically "transportation spells". Fantasy has always been a genre of escape; like a timid fairy or Harry Potter snitch, the EP flits past in a wonderful plume of magic smoke.

Review: Prolific producer Carlos Nino fires out albums at roughly the same pace as a bored teenager sends out text messages. We've lost count of the number of full-length excursions he's released to date, though we can confirm that this is the fifth album in his collaborative ...& Friends series. As the title, Going Home, euphemistically hints, all six compositions were inspired by death and the idea of the afterlife. Musically, it's a stunningly evocative and emotion-rich affair, with Ninos and his chosen musicians (including new age legend Iasos) effortlessly combining elements of early '80s electronica, Berlin school ambient, free-jazz, Penguin Cafe Orcehstra style Baroque eccentricity and Namlook-esque deep space bliss. In other words, it's another inspired and must-have record from Carlos Ninos.

Review: Six years have passed since Los Angeles MC and beat-maker Zeroh dropped his first collection of cuts, an epic, 30-track digital album that showcased his ability to take hip-hop in intriguing and off-kilter new directions. "BLQLYTE", his official debut album, has been a long time coming, but we can assure you it was worth the wait. His flowing, distinctively evocative vocals - part sung, part rapped, always inspired - provide a central focus point to a musically eclectic set whose paranoid, doom-laden soundscapes brilliantly mix and match elements of hip-hop, jazz, drowsy electronica, mutant R&B, ambient and music concrete. It's the kind of album that takes a while to sink in, but give it a chance and you'll be thoroughly rewarded.
