Be
Thinkin' 'Bout You
Review: Munich-based Coeo endured a slow start to their career, with a two-year gap between their 2012 debut on Globelle, and their recent comeback on DaBit. Here they pop up on Brooklyn's Let's Play House imprint with a fine collection of warm, rolling and unfussy US house-influenced tracks. "Be" boasts the hazy swing and cut-up vocal stabs of classic US garage, while "Thinkin' About You" adds some sleazy sax samples and long, drawn out strings to a classic New Jersey rhythm. The title track is a little more driving and energetic, but still retains the Rhodes-powered warmth of Coeo's trademark sound. The package also includes a decent - and rather smooth - Revenge dub of the title track, and "Good Love", a bustling, digital-only bonus cut.

Eyes On You
Need You
Review: Drop The Lime's housier project is enjoying some renewed attention from a producer more commonly enamoured with delivering tear-out hype-up electro business, although in this EP for Let's Play House you can still hear plenty of full-fat production tendencies working their way into the Curses sound. "Back in the Dark" may shuffle with a New York urgency, but there's a big-room European feel to the nagging synth stabs at the core of the track. Still it's a far more measured affair compared to the lairy bass sludge and manic bleep action of Naum Gabo's remix of the track. "Eyes On You" however shows a more sensitive side with its brushed drums and spooky keys, bringing some balance to the EP without diluting the wild ideas.

Review: Let's Play House, the NYC label run with aplomb by Jacques Renault, James Friedman and Juno Plus scribe Nik Mercer, unveil their latest release will be an EP from mysterious production outfit the Dead Rose Music Company. Our pick of the jams on offer has to be "Faith", a moody, thumping disco reworking which is perfectly described by the label as "the jumbled recollections of last night's disco fading in and out of strobe-lit smoke on the dancefloor". Also do check the Dennis Parker sampling epic "Nutkins"!

Not Enough
Not Enough (KRL remix)
Review: Jacques Renault and Co's Brooklyn imprint, Let's Play House, has been busy ensuring that the classic house and disco sound of New York stays alive for a hot minute now. This new release couldn't be more Big Apple if it tried: "Tonight", with its thumping kick, campy claps and looped Gypsy Woman organs, positively screams Limelight circa 1991. Ooft! keeps a lot of the early 90s sentiment in his own remix, even bringing Bjork's "Violently Happy" to mind. B-Side, "Not Enough", again keeps with the retro organs, but adds harder modern loops. Finally, KRL's mix steers away from tradition, offering a more contemporary leftfield approach.

Midnight Magic - "Same Way I Fee Lt"
Review: Since launching last year, New York's Let's Play House imprint has delivered a string of nigh on essential releases. Given the background of those involved (Jacques Renault, Nik Mercer, James Friedman), it's perhaps little surprise that LPH releases tend to span a range of styles. They're at it again on this excellent EP. There's a delightfully melancholic, out-there chunk of tear-jerking disco/house from Dead Rose Music Company, live leftfield disco from the brilliant Midnight Magic, a thrilling fusion of Balearic nu-disco and acid house from Pixelife, and a decidedly E'd-up tribute to "Your Love" from Bicep. As ever, the quality threshold is high throughout.

Lucky For Some (6:13)
Review:  Felix Dickinson and Jaime Read are old sparring partners, having previously joined forces for releases on 2MR and Is It Balearic?. This first collaborative outing of 2016 sees them flexing their retro-futurist muscles for Let's Play House. "Rarely On A Tuesday" sits somewhere between early '80s New York proto-house, early Chicago jack and later acid, with cosmic electronics and delay-laden synths riding a killer groove. They do a passable impression of early Orbital on the deeper, early '90s flex of "Mistaken Identity", before joining the dots between Chicken Lips, Mark Seven and Eric Duncan on the late night sweetness of "Lucky For Some". All three tracks are sparse, rubbery, and impressively floor-friendly.

Wie Gehts
Sanctuary
Scenic Route
Review: Mic Newman's sample-heavy alias Fantastic Man is back, making his debut on New York's Let's Play House label. It's Jazz , rolling pianos and an interjecting trumpet that are sampled most, quite roughly, in the EP's title track, while 'how are you' or "Wie Gehts", rather, sees Fantastic Man's DJ fader approach to production come back into play - best heard on his track "Look This Way" from 2010. The EP's highlight is the hi-energy skip and twinkling keys of "Sanctuary", while "Scenic Route", sampling some spoken word this time, combines Italo disco with touches of Krautrock and, of course, house music.

Vibrations
Hezbobongo
Review: Melbourne native Griffin James has been busy over the past few years, snapping up releases on Sleazy Beats, Join The Dots, Drumpoet Community and Fina in a whirlwind of contemporary deep house. As such it makes sense to see him sliding over to Let's Play House for another bout, leading in with the riotous party atmosphere of "Hezbolla". It comes on like the more flamboyant end of Moodymann's layering techniques, all shot through with a hooky central drum that wanders through a range of pitches. "Vibrations" gets into a more soulful kind of snag, all fragile beats that could crumple at any second and heartfelt key loops. "Hezbongobongo" is a more outwardly metallic edit that lets the drums shine through without the heated social ambience for those who like their beats with clarity.

Review: Sweden's HNNY (strictly pronounced 'honey' for the newcomers!) returns to New York's Let's Play House with a devious four-tracker for the summer months. "Solsidan" is a beautifully groovy deep house number with distinct jazz and r&b influences - the vocal samples are simply seductive - and the remix duties come from Avalon Emerson who drops in a heavier load of beats and breaks for floor devastation. On the flip, "Alby" goes downtempo with its charming Rhodes keys but Ana Helder shifts the beat back into bump-mode on her version of the cut. Far out.

Kela (Shakarchi & Straneus remix)
Review: There's something rather special about "Mys", the latest missive from occasional Local Talk type Johan Cederberg. It's certainly unusual, with Cederberg brilliantly wrapping a soft-centred, floor-friendly deep house groove around Beach Boys-do-gospel style vocal harmonizing. It's unlike anything else we've heard, which given the ubiquity of ponderous deep house at present, is no bad thing. Young Marco provides a sterling remix, too, delivering a skittering, analogue-heavy version that retains the original's touchy-feely air whilst taking it in an entirely different direction. Virtual flipside "Kela" is similar to his previous work for Local Talk (think US garage influenced deep house), while Shakari & Straneous deliver a deeper, woozier rework.

Holy Sin
Holy Sin (Manolo remix)
Review: Whistling on a track can go one of two ways; it can come off as cheesy and annoying or add a cool, wistful texture to an already finely-tuned groove. Luckily for Portuguese house duo Johnwaynes, "I Can See" definitely falls in the latter category. With a bumping, jaunty groove (that sounds a lot like Silver City material - which is no bad thing), the whistle merely adds colour to a fine warm track. For more beef (and less whistles) head directly to Jacques Renault's acid tinged remix. Elsewhere on the release you'll find "Holy Sin", a much darker, deeper, heads-down number that wouldn't go amiss on labels such as Innervisions or Get Physical. Manolo ends the EP on a techy note with a remix of "Holy Sin". Tasty.

May The Lord Have Mercy On Us All (Luke Hess remix) (7:31)
Like Falling Angels (Basic Soul Unit remix) (6:20)
Review: There are some seriously haunting tones at work on this new single from regular collaborators Jozef K and Winter Son, as Let's Play House keep a little winter spirit alive thanks to the utterly evocative tones of "May The Lord Have Mercy On Us All". By way of contrast "Like Falling Angels" comes woozing to life on hazy loops of piano and far-flung drums that might just be right for a mystical summer time experience. In terms of remixes, Luke Hess goes to task on "May The Lord Have Mercy On Us All" and turns it into an expressive, limber dub techno cut while Basic Soul Unit dices "Like Falling Angels" into a dislocated electro abstraction.

Awake (4:52)
Review:  The first Let's Play House single of 2016 comes from 20-something producer Klaves, a Polish starlet whose previous releases have doffed a cap to classic UK garage, '90s US house, and contemporary bass music. "Say It", the title track from this EP, boasts all the ingredients of classic US garage, including rolling organ riffs, skipping beats, soulful vocal samples and occasional jazzy flourishes. Studio Barnhus regular Baba Stiltz emphasizes Klaves' jazzier stylings on his dusty, warm deep house revision, which makes great use of vintage vinyl crackle and some new piano motifs. Finally, Klaves delivers one more chunk of well-lit USG revivalism, offering up the looser and more organic sounding "Awake".

Review: It's been a good year for San Laurentino and his playful take on warm, analogue house music, getting snapped up by Mathematics and Live At Robert Johnson no less, and now he slides on over to Let's Play House to impart four polished gems of the kind of comforting grooves that defined Kompakt in the early days. The melodies are plush and accomplished every step of the way, although rendered in timbres that swerve cheesiness in favour of an honest sweetness. "Deeper Soul" particularly draws you in with its tumbling, wooden melodies and easy groove, keeping the mood mellow but still buoyed by the level of detail within.

Dead Faces (Neville Watson remix)
Review: Dean Meredith (Rhythm Odyssey, Chicken Lips etc) and Ben Shenton ressurect their MEB project for a second outing on Let's Play House. As you'd expect from the duo, "Dead Faces" swims in analogue waters, fusing Meredith's particularly brand of vintage synth fetishism with acid-flecked, Italo-meets-house grooves. The darker, more confused "Killerwatt" offers another clandestine trip, this time laden with dub effects and cheeky guitar samples. It's good, too, but lacks the title track's instant impact. The EP also boasts two smart remixes of "Dead Faces"; a strobelight stroll from acid revivalist Neville Watson and a chunk of Halloween-friendly voodoo house from San Sebastien.

Review: New York based party-cum-label Let's Play House return with their second release. Following a killer debut from Runaway (aka Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault, the latter of whom runs LPH with Nik Mercer) the sophomore cut comes from The M.E.B., a new project featuring Chicken Lips man Dean Meredith and fellow Londoners Ben Shenton and Tim Silver. Jacques and Nik have called in New York ace Brennan Green and Juno Plus Podcast alumnus Chicago Damn to remix the two original tracks, namely driving Italo anthem "Il Principal" and the slow burning "M5-M6". The pick of the bunch is Mr Green's piano-soaked remix of B-Side cut "M5 M6", which beefs up the original's key refrain for a slab of chunky disco-house primed for use at LPH's legendary NYC parties and beyond.

Review: The Let's Play House stable know a thing or two about swinging, pumping house jams that smack you right between the eyes, and this time it's Montel delivering the punch, kicking off with the downright anthemic "Peace In The World", all epic piano stabs and irrepressible funk. "Runnin'" is a more meditative cut, stitching dusty chords and simmering strings into a gentle house groove of the finest kind. "Ecstasy" reaches for the hand-raising antics once again, while "Get Down" gets a little trickier with its chopped up vocal antics and sultry key swells making for a potent, sexy slice of record bag ammo.

Review: Firmly ensconsed in the house music axis, the NYC based label Let's Play House first dabbled in the art of various artists EPs last year with celebrated results, drawing on the talents of The Dead Rose Music Company and Bicep amongst others. Clearly emboldened by their success, a second V/A EP arrives sporting a similarly high profile cast of international contributors in Montel (McWilliams), Portuguese duo The Johnwaynes, Belgian Mugwump and Newcastle pairing Last Waltz. UK talent Montel has been on some form this year and the chord heavy "Can't Go Wrong" maintains his sleek streak while The Johnwaynes offer an undeniably tech house drum track in "Alexandria". Mugwump pulls out his power synths for some throbbing and brooding psychedelia, while Last Waltz remain rocksteady in "Sorry Ronnie" which features flutters of tropicana underpinned by a electrified synths and forward driving beats.

It's On (Tevo Howard remix)
Review: Expanding a transatlantic connection forged with releases from UK artists The M.E.B. and Dead Rose Music Company, the fourth release for Let's Play House comes from Glasgowegian techno heroes Naum Gabo (Jonnie Wilkes of Optimo and James Savage) who inject a bit of motoric stomp to LPH's generally housey identity. The 12" starts off with "Ah & Oh," a creepy, frantic boogie that quickly hypnotizes with its loopy synth progressions and chopped-up vocal samples. The song eventually disintegrates into a thinned-out smattering of glitches and blips, making for a seamless transition into the more bass-heavy second track. "It's On" boldly conveys a sense of lunacy and impending (dance floor) doom, as though the club might collapse unless you keep stomping along to the distorted bass warbles. The flip also features a remix of "It's On" by Chicago's drum machine man, the legendary Tevo Howard, who trims the fat, making for a more streamlined yet muscular rendering of the original. An acid version of the mix will be offered as a digital exclusive.
