Review: Prom Nite is the latest new album from deck wizard ad beat maker DJ Yoda. He announced it and teased the sounds to expect with Feel Like Home - a new single featuring the incredible House Gospel Choir. It's a single that gets you up off the floor after sad news and was recorded in the depths of lockdown. Says Yoda, "It felt great to collaborate with the House Gospel Choir, as they're about as positive, energetic, creative and fun a bunch of people as you'll find anywhere. I'm always looking for the next thing to try out, and to dip my toes into the world of soulful gospel music was a heart-warming process."

Review: Legendary turntablist and acclaimed beat maker DJ Yoda is back with a new album Prom Nite this month. Just before the full-length drops comes this single from it on essential 7". It follows on from the well-received 'Feel Like Home' 45rpm last month and this time offers more well-conceived and carefully sought-out fusions. The a-side 'My Energy' features Eva Lazarus. It is a lovely soulful slow jam that has a breakup melancholy to it and lovely doo-wop vibes. Completing this package is the flip side 'Lesson 1956' (feat Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody) which is another great revisiting of Americana.

Review: DJ Yoda is a pioneering turntables, scratch DJ and hip-hop master who has defined all those scenes for more than 20 years. For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. As well as the original, an instrumental is included on the flip. Both sides of this one hit different. Must cop.

Review: Renowned turntable technician and beat maker DJ Yoda's with album spaced with standout singles. It is a record couched in retro Americana with plenty of high profile guests including the likes of Beardyman, Choosey, The House Gospel Choir, Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody and O Love. These tracks show how far Yoda has come from a crowd pleasing DJ used to cutting up and scratching a dizzying array of sounds to a cultured producer who can craft plenty of great grooves as well as moving emotions. Much of it is made from live instrumentation with a healthy dose of nostalgia next to inventive new styles.

Review: Edan's Beauty and The Beat is a classic of the genre from back in 2005. It's a fusion of rap and hip hip styles that are all rooted in the classic era of the 90s but with some contemporary production flourishes. Edan's psych-influenced beats and wide array of well chosen samples are draw from all manner of genres and are carefully worked into funky beats that range of raw and hard hitting to more laid back and sun kissed. A range of guest MCs such as Percee-P, Dagha, Insight, Mr Lif and more all help add their own colour .

Review: Talk about fitting titles for an album. Skinshape has pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one, presenting a lush and intoxicating 11 tracks of calm (or, perhaps more accurately, cool) waters waiting for you to float on. These are pieces informed by 1960s movie scores, 70s funk, southern US psychedelic blues, and all manner of genres and subgenera that place an emphasis on sticky heat tempos, guitar licks, and a feeling of keeping one eye on the rear view mirror while cruising imagined highways.

Another triumph by the artist, if those descriptions aren't really cutting it then think the quietest ends of Khruanbin, Bonobo on a beach day, and El Michels Affair at their most soulful and cinematic. Transportive stuff, while purposefully informed and influenced by songs of the past, somehow Skinshape manages to paint fresh mental pictures with these familiar brushes.

Review: If you don't know William Dorey already then chances are you're about to realise you've been missing out on quite the artist. Working as Skinshape, he's managed to garner a quiet cult following for his relatively quiet music, designed to unwind to, allow worries of the day to unwind, and dissipate into a concoction of psychedelic pop, downtempo electronica and dubby grooves.
Turn Away, a two-track single featuring titular piece and 'Dreams of Panama' is the latest case in point. Sublime melodies and deceptively advanced acoustic guitar work set to lackadaisical rhythms and beat patterns, soothing brass and synthesised strings helping capture a real mood. Which, specifically, is all about slowing down, and taking time to appreciate the moment. Designed to transport you to far away places, real and imagined, it sounds reductive to say these are bonafide travelling tunes but they are. The real joy is they also sound incredible when standing still.

Review: Based out of Brooklyn, New York, The Still Brothers is a group made up of two childhood friends, Andrew LeCoche of Ula Ruth and Evan Heinze from The Shacks. They started their musical adventure way back in the 6th grade. In the decade since they have managed to record and tour with their own respective groups, as well as work on their own distinctive brand of indie together. Here they tap up Sloshy for a feature on a new 7" that comes via Lewis. 'It's Not Over' is a dreamy cut lush vocal harmonies and lo-fi drums making for a beautifully melancholic sound. 'Crazy' has slightly more primate drum breaks and the Shoshy is just as smooth.
