Numbers Talk EP
Cat: LIVITY 051. Rel: 10 Nov 21
Techno
  1. Fourth Time (7:29)
  2. High Five (5:02)
  3. Legs Eleven (7:16)
  4. Tough One (6:26)
Review: UK producer Ben Walker aka Beneath is back after a three year hiatus, with his latest coming out on Bristol's Livity Sound. The No Symbols/Mistry Muzik chief brings on the dark subterranean vibes on opening cut 'Fourth Time', while the stirring drums of 'High Five' will entrance you, awash in a haunting and multi-layered atmosphere. Over on the flip, there's some deep dubstep served up on the meditative polyrhythms of 'Legs Eleven' and ending with the low end theory of 'Tough One' which will engulf you in a wall of sound.

Drums From The West EP
Cat: LIVITY 050. Rel: 01 Feb 22
Techno
  1. Medusa (4:59)
  2. Drums From The West (4:54)
  3. You Think Too Much (4:27)
  4. Ah Bon (4:16)
Review: Livity Sound kick-starts its second decade with a seriously significant release: the Bristol-based broken techno imprint's 50th twelve-inch. Fittingly, it comes from two label regulars: French techno revolutionary Simo Cell and Bristol ever-present Hodge. As the title makes clear, percussion is at the heart of the EP, with all four tracks combining punishing polyrhythmic drums with gargantuan basslines, trippy vocal samples and unsettling electronic textures. Such is the quality on show that selecting highlights is tough, though our current favourites include the ethereal synth lines, stabbing bass and loose-limbed beats of 'You Think Too Much', the low-slung late-night paranoia of 'Medusa' and the punishing percussive intensity of 'Drums From The West'.

Make It Circular EP
Cat: LIVITY 048. Rel: 07 Jul 21
Techno
  1. Grapefruit (6:26)
  2. Microshift (5:12)
  3. Make It Circular (5:18)
  4. Constant (4:41)
Review: Manchester's Lack is back on Livity Sound a year after his last masterclass on the Inside EP. Once again he takes out his scalpel and does some precision work together together UK bass, minimalism, dub and techno. Every track is floaty light yet muscular. The drums hit hard but are also somehow barely there. Floating ambient pads drift next to skeletal jungle rhythms and dark bass hops or lurches beneath the precision drum programming. 'Grapefruit' is a downtempo opener to get the vibe going, then the quiet artistry of 'Microshift' gets the party going, 'Make It Circular' is for the heads at 5am and the fluttering melodies of 'Constant' make a shout for tune of the EP.

Review: Since emerging from the post-dubstep scene a decade ago, the Livity Sound label has done much to define a new era of sub-heavy UK techno. Molten Mirrors, the label's 10th anniversary release, is not a retrospective, but rather a snapshot where the label is now: in rude health and delivering some of its most enlightened and bowel-bothering music to date. There's Afro-tinged early morning drowsiness from Azu Twiline; percussive peak-time hypnotism from Forest Drive West, Bruce and Batu; polyrhythmic techno delights courtesy of Bakongo, Pev & Kowton and Simo Cell; hard-to-pigeonhole experimentalism from Facta and Kouslin; and much more besides.
