Review: Asok touches down on Holland's excellent MOS Deep label with another headstrong four-tracker primed and hand built for the dancefloor. "Future Wars", as the name suggests, is a forward-thinking acid chugger boasting a gorgeous collection of chords and pads, and "Final Battle" is a darker, heads-down kinda joint. Flip the plate and you have "Interaction", its banging kick drum dominating the groove among grizzly percussion shots, and the more lo-fi "Abandoned Places"... a true Chicago house nodder that'd sound just fine on Trax!

Review: Right after two recent drops on Steffi's Dolly imprint and the London based EYA Records, Utrecht based producer Boehm is back with his second release on MOS Recordings on which he again ventures into the deeper side of house music. The EP begins with title track 'Connected' an emotive and mesmerising journey, while over on the flip there's the energetic 'Mainstreet' capturing the feeling of Detroit style hi-tech soul, and the playful tech funk of 'Underground'.

Bad Driver (Aroy edit)
Lager Nord (original)
Lager (Obsolete Music Technology remix - Steven Tang)
Review: The M>O>S Deep series returns with a three track missive from Chicago Skyway, a producer who first impressed Juno ears with a cracking EP for London based imprint Uzuri in 2010. It was Chicago Skyway (real name Sean Hernandez) who produced the first release for the Dutch imprint's Deep offshoot, and here he returns with some decidedly grubby (in a good way) analogue treats. Spread across the A-Side is an edit of "Bad Driver" by M>O>S chief Aroy Dee, who turns in a classic bubbling acid revision. Drunken, meandering synth washes characterise "Lager Nord", which shares the flip with an excellent Obsolete Music Technology remix by Steven Tang. Essential 12".

How Are We Doing?
A Second Earth
Review: ** REPRESS ** The ever excellent D'Marc Cantu serves up this two track re-entry on MOS DEEP which serves as an enticing prelude to the producer's eagerly awaited debut album (of sorts) which is due later this year. Across both sides of the hand stamped ten inch Cantu demonstrates the ease with which he can work vintage, driving Chicago house rhythms and more emotive, utopian visions of machine made sounds. Lead track "How Are We Doing?" is the former, with wide reaching analogue thrusts gradually being joined by soaring strings over a driving jack groove. Our favourite however is the B Side "A Second Earth", a blissful saunter through laidback melodic touches and skittering rhythms that could go for infinity and not lose its charm.

The Other Side Of House
Review: A New World, the second artist album in as many years from D'Marc Cantu shows that he should be viewed as being the master of his own destiny rather than an engaging sideshow to more high-profile associates Traxx and James T. Cotton. The lack of Jakbeat, the primal interpretation of Chicago house that the Nation stable of artists have developed, is notable here, When it does rear its grungy head, it does so in the most irresistibly creepy manner; "Green Bike Sea" starts with rolling snares and leads to a grainy bass and shaking percussion underpinning muffled vocals and bleeding acid lines. "Try Me" is meaner and yet more suggestive, with the scent of blood and sweat-caked bar counters rising over a red-lit, heaving bass. But the real highlights on A New World occur when the producer completely indulges his esoteric whims. "Mobile Communication" sees heavy claps supporting bleeding, bleepy bass licks, but it's merely a prelude for "The First Planet". Inspired by Detroit techno, it's Cantu's piece de resistance: atmospheric synths arc slowly upwards, their acidic undercurrent like tail lights on a jumbo jet as they reach into the upper levels of the night sky, hopefully guiding Cantu towards greater recognition.

Acid Test
Review: One of the founding fathers of the Jakbeat ethos alongside fellow Nation artists Tadd Mullinix and Melvin Oliphant III, D'Marc Cantu's music doesn't really deviate down the weird wormholes that the other two occasionally like to occupy. He is however remarkably prolific, and yet there is always a sense of quality that comes with each and every D'Marc Cantu release. Recent times have found the producer stepping outside of Creme and MOS comfort zone in style, but it's nice to find D'Marc Cantu back on Aroy Dee's label with the Long Weekend 12" for MOS DEEP. Some three tracks deep, Long Weekend largely sees the producer in full-on 303 mode, with the B-side given over entirely to two fast-paced acid jams, with only the title track on the A-side going on a deeper house tip.

Life
Review: M>O>S Recordings founder Aroy Dee awakes from his production slumber with this wonderful blend of melodic house and techno on his own imprint. The Delsin-affiliated label has been in fine form of late, releasing the stunning Morphosis long player What Have We Learned and a gem of a 12" from D'Marc Cantu this year. "Beauty" features some particularly affecting chord movements, rising and swirling as the track reaches a heady climax. On the flip the aforementioned Morphosis dons his Ra H moniker for a simmering, Chicago-influenced version of "Beauty", while "Life" rounds off the 12" with some dusty Trax-style analogue bump - this one just needs Jamie Principle wailing over the top!

Review: M>O>S Recordings are no strangers to the long player format, having previously issued impressive long players from D'Marc Cantu and Morphosis, but with the label surpassing ten years of activity it feels the right time for founder Aroy Dee to grace us with his own debut album. If you've read up on Dee you'll know he's also an architect with a specific interest in the sprawling structures of Asian cities and this has bled into the aesthetic of MOS as a whole; it's certainly present on Sketches with his own city based illustrations adorning the cover art and an urban sensibility running through his productions here. A doleful serenity is present throughout much of Sketches, though tracks such as "City of Others" and "Ashes To Ashes" fit snugly into the canon of great MOS floor burners.

Review: The finely honed A&R skills of MOS boss Aroy Dee came up trumps last year when the label uncovered the talented newcomer Gerstaffelen for the excellent The Old Villagers 12" on sub label MOS Deep. The general level of accomplishments shown on that record lead to rumours Gerstaffelen may have been the work of an established artist working under pseudonym, a suggestion that remains unfounded still with the arrival of some new material from the mystery producer. From the off, you can see why Aroy Dee wanted more from Gerstaffelen with lead cut "Bombara" the right mixture of grit and light with strange vocal inflections reminiscent of D'Marc Cantu, whilst "Invisible Ghosts" is a monstrous production that sounds like the analogue gods are warring. On the flip Gerstaffelen heads North and South with two variants on the EP title that lend proceedings some lightness.

When The Mind Stops
Review: Don't be confused, the Turbo artist Gesaffelstein hasn't forgone his attempts to oversee a revival of electro clash and signed up for Aroy Dee's label. The Old Villagers EP marks the debut release from the mysterious Gerstaffelen, an apparent newcomer whose mastery of production belies this and fits right in on the Amsterdam label's remit. The four tracks here have apparently been road-tested by Aroy Dee for months and the label will surely be nudging Gerstaffelen for more! From the sumptuous Wolfers at mid tempo pace of the title track proceedings veer deeper into more frenzied, twisted territory as the run out groove of Side B draws closer. It's hard to choose between "Game On Major" and "Little Green Munchkin Men" for our favourites of this release - both are superbly unhinged!

Review: It's John Heckle week here at Juno HQ; the office is still reverberating from the huge mix the Liverpudlian producer dropped for the Juno Plus site last week and we have not only a new album from him to enjoy but this debut release for Aroy Dee's MOS Recordings! Named after a mountain range near Chinese city Ghuangzhou, the Baiyun Mountain EP finds Heckle in typically unrelenting form from the off. Ferocious is the best way to describe "Cactus Jack," and "Birds With Vertigo" takes things even darker, the incessant chatter of drums underpinned by all manner of demonic, menacing vocal samples and harsh bass tones. The title track offers a chance to escape the hellish nature of the A Side, operating at a slower tempo which demonstrates Heckle is eminently capable of a deeper and more relaxed sound.

Review: Having already been responsible for one debut album this year in Astral Travelling, the Innerspace Halflife LP issued on Hakim Murphy's Synapsis label, Ike Release lives up to his reputation as one of Chicago's most prolific artists with a solo debut album. Issued by Aroy Dee's MOS Recordings, the ten track Noir will not sound like any sort of immediate departure from the weighty brand of hardware driven house and techno we've come to associate with Release. As usual the finer nuances and intricacies of this album will reveal themselves over repeat listens, and it's time you'll appreciate spending with Noir as Release really showcases a variety of emotions between the commencement of "Lost Cities" and the climax of closer "Sierra".

Phazzled (Ike Release produced)
Review: After Hakim Murphy and Ike Release inaugurated the Innerspace Halflife project earlier this year with a sublime debut on the former's Machining Dreams imprint - they now grace Aroy Dee's ever excellent MOS Deep label with a further enthralling journey. Even if the aforementioned Cosmology EP passed you by, you should be familiar enough with the respective solo endeavours of both producers to be suitably excited by "Wind". You won't be disappointed either, with the track unfurling from its icy origins into a monstrous arrangement dominated by the fluctuating acid bassline and razor sharp hi-hats, while the soaring chords that intermittently spread expansively over proceedings add brief moments of Utopian calm amid the relentless jacking pressure. This is complemented by a solo Ike Release cut in the shape of "Phazzled" which adopts a more atmospheric tone as ever present clouds of analogue fx add a hazy sensation to the strident drum programming and woozy chord arrangements - quite aptly described by MOS Deep as "classicist house with a future perspective".

Review: The Aphrology EP marks a killer induction into the MOS Deep annals of excellence from Ksoul & Muteoscillator, the Italian duo who have impressed intermittently with their dense brand of techno for Uzuri and Kinda Soul Recordings (which is overseen by Ksoul himself). The two part "Criminology" opens proceedings face up, with the restrained acid leanings of the opening gambit slightly overwhelmed by the unrelenting modulated brutality of its subsequent partner. Face down and MOS Deep ringleader Aroy Dee sneaks in with his own edit of "Aphrology" before Ksoul and Muteoscillator can demonstrate the title track's prowess - it's Dee to a tee, taking the well judged house that swells with ever menacing machine squeals and adding his own subtle percussive embellishments.

Review: MOS Deep travel into the uncharted waters of Glasgow on their latest release, securing The Haggis Trap from rising production talent Stephen Lopkin. Some four tracks deep, this 12" is Lopkin's full debut release on vinyl after serving notice of his talent in the digital realm (which included a 2012 LP) and his approach seems perfectly in line with Aroy Dee's label. Take for example "The Haggis Trap" which fluctuates superbly between moments of calm and acid drenched chaos or the superb hi tech jazz stylings of "Catherine's Track". On the flip, the superbly titled "Let's All Talk About Me" shows Lopkin can lay down dusty kicks with the best of them whilst "Mugs Alley" expertly demonstrates his talent for melody.

Review: Tales from the Night Sky (Part 1) sees Perseus Traxx continue to mine the acid house past of Chicago across four tracks. Unlike some of his less imaginative contemporaries however, this producer's productions gargle with a frenzied density that shows his own distinctive take on the period. Lead track "Gorgon" has an acid line to rival Laurent X's "Machines", but its main focus is the interplay between the distorted drums and the trance inducing melodies. Complementing this, "Poseidon's Monster" opts for a primitive jacking approach but the unexpected highlight is "Stranger Shores". Here Rogers explores a slower tempo and fashions delicate melodies that are in stark contrast to what precedes it.

Review: Maria's Transcendence marks a welcome and long overdue return to the MOS empire for Melvin Oliphant III, unveiling another alias in the shape of The Poetic Painter M. You can't help but be impressed by the production skills on show with "Maria's Transcendence", a deeply dark track with a classic acid refrain at its core which is subjected to wave after wave of textures flushed with raw emotion. Along with the expansive nature of the original track (nearly every inch of the A Side is utilised), MOS Recordings have also secured a towering remix from Chicago Skywave which flushes "Maria's Transcendence" with all new levels of soaring emotion and some brilliantly scattergun drum machine manipulation. Label boss Aroy Dee further edits the track, transforming it into a skeletal exercise in dizzying reverberation.

Black Rain (Analogue mix)
Black Rain (ambient mix)
Review: It's no wonder that MOS Deep has managed to build itself a serious reputation within the deeper side of the techno spectrum, with a family of artists that seem to mature with each release. The latest instalment comes from Dutch DJ and producer, R A G aka Aroy Dee who collaborated with Ma Spaventi on the previous MOS Deep cut. "Chunky analogue" is the best term to describe these three tracks and this is a further delight given the domination of plug-ins and software these days. Title track "Black Rain" begins with a warm and punchy kick-drum accompanied by a series of crunchy snares and hi-hats which flow in unison with a ghostly melody. The analogue mix on the flip side has an eye on the dance floor and allows the drum machine more space to play, but still manages to retain most of the mystique created on the A-Side. As if that wasn't enough, there is even an ambient mix for all those wishing to go that further step into the ether.

Review: Although the RAG trio of MOS Deep boss Aroy Dee, and label regulars G-String and Marco Spaventi, are inspired by classic Chicago deep house, their hardware productions come laden with a heavy set weight and alien synth textures that put their productions into a totally different league from the majority of current revivalists. "Vacuum (Ignition mix)" is a case in point, combining twisting acid lines with soaring galactic chords and a weighty concrete kick that sounds controlled yet brimming with manic energy. On the flip, "Plenum (Outer mix)" offers an ambient lead in to "Plenum (Inner mix)", a more restrained affair than "Vacuum", letting its languorous acid line glide over a soft kick and sea of synthetic bliss. Highly recommended stuff from the MOS crew as always.

Review: Random XS was founded in 1991, when DJ Zero One (Sander Friedeman) joined forces with Arno Peeters to perform live at a small underground party in Utrecht before the latter left three years later and was replaced by Frank de Groodt. After the long awaited re-release of their 1992 Djax-Up-Beats classic "Give Your Body" last year on Delsin, they return with a pair of unreleased jams for fellow Dutch imprint MOS Recordings. Both tracks are said to be recorded in the early '90s, but reworked and remastered for "heavy club impact". On the A side is some proper minimal mentalism on the frantic and tunnel vision "Centrifuge", followed by the sublime 303 wizardry of "Relic Reworked" on the flip, which hails "all aboard the acid express!" better than any other.

Ma Spaventi - "Wrecking"
Aroy Dee - "Mr Floyd"
Review: There's something strangely appealing about M>O>S Deep releasing music on a 10" record; the compact size and the neat packaging are complemented by the fact that each piece of music is so stripped down, raw and full of sub-bass that they can barely press it onto such a small and lovable piece of wax. And in keeping with releases from 2AM/FM and D'Marc Cantu, the tenth release for M>O>S Deep - a split EP with Ma Spaventi and label boss Aroy Dee - features two tracks packed with so much raw power that the grooves struggle to tie them down. The record opens with Spaventi's "Wrecking", a stripped down track consisting almost solely of growling acid lines. The whole piece of music seemingly hangs on a menacing and aggressive 303 workout set at a snail's pace and interspersed with crisp hi-hats and a kick drum soaked in reverb. Aroy Dee provides balance with the flipside and his peculiarly titled "Mr Floyd". In typical Dee style the track features an unending parade of blissed out pads, gentle textures and layer upon layer of deep house. It gently nudges you along, revealing more depth with each passing minute, allowing the full-bodied percussion to gently build the tension before it melts to nothing amongst his perpetually translucent synth work.
