Mono Middle (6:37)
Whenever Voi (6:06)
Free Upload (4:53)
Van Cul (5:31)
Past Vibration (3:14)
Review: It's common knowledge now that #.4.26. is Ilian Tape mainman Dario Zenker, who under this alias released a slew of hard hitting DJ tools on cult label Frozen Border - and this is his first new material under the name since five years. From the sheer terror of dynamic opener "Mono Middle", a dystopian electro number saturated in dense lo-fi fuzz, the broken beats continue on the minimal boom and thump of "Whenever Voi". But it's the B side that proclaims no more Mr. Nice Guy here, with the slamming old school energy of "Free Upload" calling to mind the early '90s sound of Djax or Pro-Jex, while "Van Cul" again demonstrates Zenker's fine ability to weave broken beat arrangements into epic, big room techno bangers.

Biokinetik
Untitled
Review: Although Patrick Graser has been producing since 2008, it's as Answer Code Request that he's arguably made the biggest impact, with the Subway Into EP and his remix of Skudge marking him out to be a producer with a very singular style of broken techno. Now he finds himself on Marcel Dettmann's MDR imprint for the first of two 12"s; A-side track "Main Mode" is perhaps a straighter cut than we've come to expect from the producer, as peak time chord stabs combine with a rolling 4/4 beat with subtle 90s breakbeat influences. On the flip, he takes things in a more experimental direction, as "Biokinetik" combines processed chopped up percussion with a sludgy bass that heaves under its own weight, and "Untitled" throws crisp 2-step snares together with ambient pads.

The Host
Thu
Mikro
Review: The second of Answer Code Request's two 12"s for Marcel Dettmann's MDR imprint sees three more rough techno cuts with 90s influences. A-side track "The Host" has echoes of Shed in its hypnotic metallic snares and looping, malfunctioning synth line. On the flip, the producer clearly indulges his tendencies for 90s IDM with "Thu", a combination of ambient Aphex style melody and minimal D&B rhythms, while "Mikro" combines a heavily panned line of kosmische-style arpeggio, deep sub-bass and skittering breakbeats. If you're familiar with Answer Code Request's material you'll know this is essential stuff - if not, the there's no better time to become acquainted.

Dust 0.2 (4:56)
Modal (4:46)
Feel (rework) (7:04)
Review: The second of MDR's surprise batch of 12"s, Answer Code Request's "Calm Down" sees the German artist go back to doing what he does best; the beats are sparse and filed with short breaks, while the sonics circling above them exude that familiar sci-fi feel. "Dust 0.2" is more of a minimal techno piece - pads and effects still firmly in place - while "Modal" flickers its strain of distortion over lo-fi acid bleeps, and "Feel (Rework)" is all about the tune's cascading synths and slow-morphing low-ends. Quality gear, as expected.

Review: By now you should all know that the MDR imprint is associated with Berlin's finest, Marcel Dettmann After a year of sporadic releases - the dude has probably been busy spinning menacing techno seven nights a week - comes this new double 12", a sort of hello from himself and his tight-knit crew over at Berlin institute of techno Berghain. All the bad boys are here, including Answer Code Request with his very singular brand of techno, The Corner man Anthony Parasole who has now become synonymous with the Berghain sound, Norman Nodge, Milton Bradley aka Alien Rain, and a few lesser known producers such as Lockertmatik and FBK. Big release, cop on sight!

Answer Code Request - "Transit"
Norman Nodge - "BB 1 0"
Lockermatik - "M_Lock 4"
Ryan James Ford - "Arthure Iccon"
Review: All hail Dettmann! Having included a veritable swathe of unreleased material from artists affiliated with his label on the excellent Fabric 77 earlier this year, Marcel Dettmann has done the right thing and issued the majority across two 12"s released this week. As is the case when granted the chance to own these cuts, it's interesting to see if they retain the power and intensity they conveyed when utilised by Dettmann within the context of the mix cd. In the case of "Transit" and "BB 1.0" from Answer Code Request and Norman Nodge respectively, that's a resounding yes! The latter's production is a particularly potent slab of lysergic sonic dementia that the more adventurous selectors will be playing for years to come. Dettman's A&R skills are on full display with cuts from Stefan 'Kryptic Universe' Schindler's new Lockermatik project and newcomer Ryan James Ford.

Corebox (James Ruskin 3rd version)
Corebox (James Ruskin Event mix)
Review: If Donato Dozzy plays Bee Mask then James Ruskin plays Marcel Dettmann. The Blueprint boss turns in three remixes of Dettmann's "Corebox", originally taken from MDR04 (featuring "Lattice"), supplying two club crafted tracks and an ambient 3rd Version. Ruskin reworks the original's famous chords, adding overdrive and reverb in his first remix, while his Event mix strips them dry to sound more like a Baby Ford or Steve O'Sullivan production. Ruskin's ambient version again uses the chords as its centrepiece, but buries them in a soundscape made for a '70s horror film.

Apron (PAS Tubed mix 2)
Apron (PAS The Rhythm remix)
Rush (PAS Deep Release remix)
Review: Amid a whole stack of MDR represses of late the label throws in three new cuts of older Dettmann material remixed by arguably the top boy of UK techno. Luke Slater under his all devouring Planetary Assault Systems alias provides two remixes of "Apron" from 2009's MDR06 and another for the track "Rush". The 'PAS Tubed mix 2' of "Apron" is a jittery piece of Luke Slater brilliance that harks back to his earlier, minimal productions as Planetary Assault Systems on Peacefrog, while the 'PAS The Rhythm remix' stays true to the dusty sound Dettmann surfaced with toward the end of last decade. Meanwhile on the flip in the 'Deep Release remix' of "Rush" sees Planetary Assault Systems provides more bona fide booming techno for Berghain that re-popularised the genre several years ago.

Onto (2010 edit) (5:23)
Escape (3:32)
Nautilus (5:17)
Foundry (5:11)
Review: The latest release on Marcel Dettmann's label starts with a surprise; "Onto (2010 edit)" sees the MDR owner in mellow form, as warm piano keys and blissed out chords coalesce over a housey beat. It's only a temporary arrangement however, and "Escape" sees him tease out a dense, dub-coated groove and a slightly stepping rhythm. Both "Nautilus" and "Foundry" mark a return to the purist approach that inspires much of Dettmann's production and the totality of his DJing. Consisting of intricate, stripped back rhythms and ticking, bubbling percussive slivers, they are less abrasive than early MDR records and provide further evidence that Dettmann is maturing as a producer.

Review: ** Repress ** And the next Berliner ready to take over the world is Mr. Marcel Dettmann. If you thought Sleeparchive was something then just wait till you check this out. Dettmann's first solo release on his confidently self titled label is a building, minimal techno tool with snappy, crunchy percussion and brooding sub bass only heightened by what sounds like another wicked job by the guys at Dubplates & Mastering. No nonsense club techno that's ready to blow up. A sure shot, a must, essential. Please note this is a limited edition stamped white label. Don't sleep. Tip!

Rjiyen Orandin (5:01)
Review: Marcel Dettman's mighty MDR label doesn't offer a huge amount of releases every year, but what does get put out is always pure and utter quality. The Berghain resident pick out Ryan James Ford for number 17 in the catalogue, a young producer which we know little to nothing about at this point. We do, however, know that he makes seriously effective techno in the label's familiar style. There's five cuts spread across the two sides on here, all representative of Dettman's marathon sets in which he spans the full circle. Aside from all the techno bashings, there are also moments of tranquillity, manifested in the beatless ambience of "Hoodlam Klothe", and "Lempt Jarkarin", in particular. Do check "Rjiyen Orandim" for some serious percussive action, though. An impressive debut.

Review: Sweden's Noah Gibson first appeared in 2015 on his local imprint Krasch Records, in addition to a release on TANSTAAFL and his own Trouble In Paradise imprint which he runs with Henrik Bergqvist. It's quite impressive that his sixth release thus far in such a short amount of time lands on Marcel Dettmann's esteemed imprint. A New Day features six cuts of raw and jacking analogue techno shenanigans which are quite a departure from the label's usual preference for harsh and industrial greyscale techno excursions. Gibson's style is somewhat reminiscent of the rusty analogue punk of homegrown heroes like Frak at times; especially on the lo-fi electro funk of "Silent Install" which was real style. However, the high octane clang and clatter of "Origin" and the cyclical thump of "Tilt" (MD Edit) will have the MDR faithful satisfied for sure.

Review: A new name we're all enjoying meeting is Kobosil, and after a release on Ostgut Ton sub-label Unterton, Max Kobosil appears on Marcel Dettmann's MDR, not a bad endorsement at all. He delivers six tracks, all of which are good, and starting with the gloomy broken-techno-beats of "Ein", it moves into the confused computer bleeps of "Asle", with the A-side concluding with a Giorgio Gigli-sounding "V762_Cas". On the flip we're met with the toxic and at some points middle-eastern sounds of a snare-skittery "Path", while "Oath" is a dirty techno bomb you're likely to hear played in a Barker & Baumecker set. Finally there's the industrial ambient "There" score with similar atmospherics to his aforementioned Unterton 12" that's paired with the kind of techno rhythm utilised by Answer Code Request.

Review: Here we go - the latest batch of MDR 12"s for the dancers and, of course, the big room DJs! Museum duo, Anton Pieete and Jeroen Liebregts, might appear to be new artists top some of our younger or lesser tech-house-inclined listeners out there, but these two have appeared on countless labels over the years, including names such as Drumcode, Audio Assault, Rejected and even Ovum. This is no surprise given the fact that MDR often handpicks artists from all over the house/techno sphere, so we're delighted to be faced with a left field choice. "Pole" and "Raider" carry out the business in fine style, ducking and diving amidst eerie walls of sound, latching onto the more minimal-minded side of techno, and powered forwards by steady licks of 4/4 drums, while Dettman's own edit of "Septem F" switches up the sound to a more tribal, hypnotic palette of sounds. "CCC" oozes the cult of the Berghain sound from every angle, and "DDD" almost feels like a continuation of the same tune into bouncier, more open-minded quarters.

Adaption
Review: Norman Nodge, beholder of one of Techno's finest names, steps up again for release duties on Berghain buddy Dettman's self titled imprint. As you expect from the previous six editions of the MDR series, the lack of fuss and pretence dedicated to a hand stamped twelve inch in non descript house bag is replicated on the head down techno tackle held within. After the stuttering machine funk of "DNA" that's punctuated by reverberant glistening fx weirdly reminiscent of a starling getting stuck in a sampler, Nodge enters more familiar Berghain territory in the scratched throbbing locked groove dynamics of "Convergence" which is driven by a thudding bassline that pulses with electronic interference. On the flip Nodge indulges his menacing side with "Homology" twisting intricate beams of laser synths across a spinal bass drum bump whilst "Adaptation" strips back proceedings to an atmospheric hum of fluctuating acid gurgles and throbbing bass with drums barely audible.

Transform
Review: Marcel Dettmann's MDR label continues to be a worthy source for deadly jacking techno stripped of any pretence, returning here with their first release of 2013 courtesy of the man Anthony Parasole. As head of The Corner, Parasole has really come to the fore as a producer after serving his time as a prominent figure in New York's techno underground. A recent 12" release under the Quickstrike banner demonstrated deftly Parasole's talent for crafting the sort of loop heavy, relentless drum tools that Herr Dettmann favours for his extended Berghain sets. So it's little surprise to find Anthony join the MDR roster with this triplet of deep throbbing techno productions, with the thickset "My Diary" a stand out inclusion.

We Can Be Friends (6:34)

Untitled 11 (5:28)
Review: All that we know about the enigmatically named Sa Pa is they are affiliated with Weimar crew Giegling, emerging earlier this year with the Fuubutsushi album on the Forum sublabel that garnered comparisons with Prince Of Denmark. Sa Pa's penchant for subaqueous techno now lands the producer a 12" debut on Marcel Dettmann Recordings. Lead track "We Can Be Friends" is so dubbed-out and murky that it could almost run as a background percussive piece in your mix - that's not to say that we don't think it's absolutely killer, because it is! "Morocco" is completely in a world of its own, crackly feedback and sparse sonics abound, while "Fast Jam" is a heady techno stomper with a punchy low-end and sublime percussion, a track that is followed by another murky load of swamped atmospherics in the form of "Untitled 11". If we have to be completely honest, this has been our favourite MDR 12" in a long time, and it comes with a heartfelt recommendation. Killer.

Review: Marcel Dettmann Records commence 2016 as they finished 2015; namely a superb techno 12" from a lesser spotted name. Following Giegling tyke Sa Pa into the MDR fold is Wrong Copy, an unheralded name but clearly a producer (or producers) that know their way round a studio set up. Across the four tracks on this In To 5 12", Wrong Copy suggest they are in possession of a diverse production palette with the title track the most charming bit of Detroit-referencing house music committed to Herr Dettmann's label. Both "Serial Command" and "Lichter" ramp up the rhythmic intensity, but sandwiched inbetween is the more contemplative sprawl of "Sixteen 11".

Dario Zenker - "Nearlin"

Rod - "RSPCT"
Marcelus - "Flash"
Review: The second of two swiftly announced 12"s on Marcel Dettmann Records to arrive this week features four more cuts the Berghain resident included in his excellent mix for Fabric earlier this week, and whilst the first was evenly split between high profile artists and newcomers this one is four heavy hitters deep. Dario Zenker, Francois X, ROD, and Marcelus all feature here and if you listened to fabric 77 it's likely you'll have been fiending after one of these tracks in particular. Within the context of fabric 77, "RSPCT" by Benny 'ROD' Rodriguez was an overpowering highlight and it's loses none of it's intensity when listened to in full. The broken, bruised and brushed techno rhythms of "Flash" by Marcelus is equally good.
