Pselum (7:38)
Menodice (5:21)
QPP (5:40)
Sub Spark (6:01)
Review: Aa Sudd shows off a grasp of heady rhythm like few others here on a new EP for Midgar. Fusing dub, techno, minimalism and stripped-back drum & bass, 'Pselum' is a magnificent opener that is tightly woven and tense yet fluid and hypnotic. It's densely packed with drums, bass and synths and sounds ancient yet futuristic. 'Menodice' is more twitchy as it darts about the stereo field with underlapping bass and skittish claps then 'QPP' is a booming double-time wonk-out. Last of all is a tripped out and hallucinogenic mind fuck that is the sensational 'Sub Spark'. A brilliantly original and well-crafted EP.

Gamma Ray (6:40)
Carbonine (6:34)
Solaris (6:28)
Monolith (7:13)
Review: Agonis takes inspiration from astronomy for his new EP on Midgar. The Berlin-based techno experimenter and co-founder of Amenthia harnesses the unworldly energy of gamma rays and their electromagnetic radiation across four cuts. 'Gamma Ray' is first and a thumping and dynamic blend of bubbling bass and rubbery kicks overlaid with spiraling synths that fall like fireworks. 'Carbonine' is another quick and punchy cut with tightly woven drums and 'Solaris' then suspends you up amongst the stars with warm solar winds streaming by next to deft synth modulations. Closer 'Monolith' slows things down and brings some mysterious late-night funk to the EP.

Phosphenes (Wata Igarashi Pressure remix) (6:28)
Block Nine (Konduku remix) (6:00)
Ricochet (Felix K Reinterpretation) (6:08)
They Live (Pessimist remix) (5:51)
Review: Some two years on from the release of Forest Drive West's rather good They Live EP, Midgar has decided to get the set remixed. They've chosen a very interesting selection of producers to provide the reworks, so it's little surprise to find that the resultant remixes are well worthy of attention. Wata Igarashi steps up first to deliver a decidedly dark, clandestine-sounding revision of 'Phosphenes' that adds ghostly chords, moody riffs and layered percussion to a pulsating broken techno groove, before Konduku re-imagines 'Block Nine' as a moody, spaced-out chunk of slipped techno hypnotism. Felix K's "reinterpretation" of 'Ricochet' is an atmospheric, ultra-deep, slow-motion affair full of starfall electronics, moody bass and intricately programmed percussion, while Pessimist's revision of 'They Live' sits somewhere between experimental D&B and skittish techno.

Review: Dutch artist Tammo Hesselink has always played with rhythm whatever style of music he makes. He does that again here with a new EP - his debut for the Midgar label out of Berlin - that showcases his stripped-back style over five fresh cuts. Opener 'Zero History' has loopy beats and a moody atmosphere that's dark but alluring then 'Nut Wandel' is another heady and hypotonic cut with undulating bass and deft sound designs while the flipside features a trio of variations on that theme - sleek rhythms and evocative little details that draw you in deep. These might ostensibly be DJ tools, but they sure do elevate a dancefloor in sophisticated ways.

The Motivator Song (6:21)
Pause & Reflect (6:35)
Slow To Speak (4:28)
Review: Since parting company with Further Records in 2016, Nuel has drifted between labels. Here, he resurfaces on Berlin-based Midgar following acclaimed outings on Northern Electronics, Semantica, Konstruct and Kontra-Musik. The most impressive thing about the EP - aside from the Italian producer's usual high quality production - is undoubtedly the variety on offer. Over the course of four fine tracks, he successfully turns his hand to skewed electro/broken techno fusion (the skittish, ear-pleasing wonkiness of "Silhouette"), metronomic, acid-flecked deep techno ("The Motivator Song"), druggy deep space techno ("Pause and Reflect") and trippy, metallic, pitched-down hypnotism (the angular melodies and trippy electronics of "Slow To Speak").

Pareidolia (5:44)
Memory Palace (5:26)
Glass Shards (5:30)
Review: Montreal-based producer Priori steps up to Midgar label and helps mark its ninth anniversary with his new EP Pareidolia. It's a sordid techno affair to start with as 'Hazard' layers up sludgy bass with menacing leads. The rolling drum transport you into a dark underworld before 'Pareidolia' then plays with deft and hyperactive minimal rhythms next to watery synth droplets. There is a broken beat brilliance to 'Glass Shards' with its skittish loops and dubbed-out rhythms then last of all, 'Memory Palace' glows with backlit and heavenly synths as minimal rhythms unfold and float you through space. It's a fantastic tune for 5AM wig-outs.

Review: The Last Day Of Pompeii is a compilation of hidden gems by Retina.it -most of them released via Chicago's Hefty Records in early 2000- and few unreleased coming as a double EP. The records will have inserts presenting 2 halves of Karl Brullov painting from 1830 (that gives the name to the project). On the backside of the insert there will be anecdotes and pictures from the archives. Midgar want to pay tribute to the Pompeian duo, whose life has been entirely dedicated to music. Retina.it is respected by the likes of Frank Bretschneider, Olaf Bender, Donato Dozzy, John Hughes considered 'big' and 'seniors' of electronic music industry, but modern public is lacking informations about them. The project 'The Last Day Of Pompeii' talks about their origins, early history and relationship with Hefty Records.

Nibelheim (Synthek remix) (6:59)
Alba (Luigi Tozzi reshape) (6:06)
Pulse Width (Wata Igarashi remix) (7:02)
Review: Italy's Ruhig, otherwise known as Luigi Cicchella, put out his first EP last year via his own Midgar imprint, an offshoot of parent label Natch Records. The Lost In The Instability EP featured five cuts of raw, sparse and forward-looking techno for the off-piste moments, a release which sees a good makeover by four remixes herein. First up is the might Edit Select (Prologue, Ostgut Ton), who rewires the title track into a bleeping, off-the-wall piledriver with plenty of grizzly ambience and squelching bottom ends, followed by Natch Records casual Synthek and his dreamy rework of "Nibelheim". The B-side contains a remix of "Alba" by the young Luigi Tozzi, another fine slice of techno hypnotics for the floor, and Japan's Wata Igarashi's dubby take on "Pulse Width". All in all, a quality episode of ethereal club music.

Following The Rules (6:24)
The Right Slope (7:24)
Bad Reputation (6:21)
Permanent Process (6:45)
Review: With releases for Planet Rhythm Records, Semantica and, more recently, the excellent MIdgar label from Berlin, Von Grall is steadily establishing himself as a highly efficient producer of slick, mechanical techno that works well for both dancefloor entrees and peak time servings. This is his second release for Midgar, and "Following The Rules" oozes its subtle yet ominous bass tones like a nuclear reactor, which leaves "The Right Slope" to diffuse some of that contained energy with a skeletal arrangement of frost-bitten techno. "Bad Reputation" is all about the intricate percussion swings circling around a barren landscape of atmospheric tones, and its surreal environment is pushed even further out into the ether thanks to "Permanent Pricess" and its fibrous assortment of bubbling sonics. Deep, deep gear.

Review: Sadly departed producer Susumu Yokota made and released some breathlessly brilliant music during his lifetime. Acid Mt Fuji, a 1994 album released in the earliest stages of his recording career, is one of the strongest examples. Here, it gets a first ever vinyl release, some 24 years after the CD edition started appearing in Japanese record stores. In typical fashion, the eleven tracks on offer brilliantly combine elements of ambient, creepy horror soundtracks, IDM and Hardfloor style hard acid with beats that veer from intense and full throttle, to skewed and experimental. It's testament to the album's timeless nature that it doesn't sound like it has aged one bit. In a word: essential.

Review: One of this week's most surprising releases comes from the Italian born/Berlin-based Midgar imprint, a fairly underground operation specialising in the more hypnotic strains of techno. They present a remastered version of Japanese electronica legend Susumu Yokota's Acid Mt. Fuji album, which first came out on Sublime Records in 1994. It's a collection of mesmerising tracks which exist on the more experimental fringes, many of them are ambient for the most part with meditative tribal rhythms introduced at some point, which add to the altogether trance-inducing qualities of the album. On the second half of the record, as heard on 'Tambarin' or 'Alphaville' in particular are some cerebral slow burners you'd probably have heard in the morning at mid '90s raves. Timeless.
