They Live Remixed
Cat: MDG 017X. Rel: 16 Mar 21

Techno
Phosphenes (Wata Igarashi Pressure remix) (6:28)
Block Nine (Konduku remix) (6:00)
Ricochet (Felix K Reinterpretation) (6:08)
They Live (Pessimist remix) (5:51)
Review: Some two years on from the release of Forest Drive West's rather good They Live EP, Midgar has decided to get the set remixed. They've chosen a very interesting selection of producers to provide the reworks, so it's little surprise to find that the resultant remixes are well worthy of attention. Wata Igarashi steps up first to deliver a decidedly dark, clandestine-sounding revision of 'Phosphenes' that adds ghostly chords, moody riffs and layered percussion to a pulsating broken techno groove, before Konduku re-imagines 'Block Nine' as a moody, spaced-out chunk of slipped techno hypnotism. Felix K's "reinterpretation" of 'Ricochet' is an atmospheric, ultra-deep, slow-motion affair full of starfall electronics, moody bass and intricately programmed percussion, while Pessimist's revision of 'They Live' sits somewhere between experimental D&B and skittish techno.

Pareidolia EP
Cat: MDG 021. Rel: 05 May 23

Techno
Hazard (6:06)
Pareidolia (5:44)
Memory Palace (5:26)
Glass Shards (5:30)
Review: Montreal-based producer Priori steps up to Midgar label and helps mark its ninth anniversary with his new EP Pareidolia. It's a sordid techno affair to start with as 'Hazard' layers up sludgy bass with menacing leads. The rolling drum transport you into a dark underworld before 'Pareidolia' then plays with deft and hyperactive minimal rhythms next to watery synth droplets. There is a broken beat brilliance to 'Glass Shards' with its skittish loops and dubbed-out rhythms then last of all, 'Memory Palace' glows with backlit and heavenly synths as minimal rhythms unfold and float you through space. It's a fantastic tune for 5AM wig-outs.

Phantom Fortress
Phantom Fortress (12" + insert limited to 300 copies)
Cat: MDG 019. Rel: 20 Oct 22

Drum And Bass
Pass Real (7:34)
Livingdoom (6:54)
Tricky Dice (6:50)
Ruff Experience (6:41)
Review: Ruff Cherry will be a name known to hardcore underground heads as a techno artist. The elusive producer has been hiding away for a while but now for the first time since 2017 is back on Midgar, this time with drum & bass sounds. These four cuts are half-time bombs with apocalyptic textures and devastating basslines that belie the fact they are a first outing in this genre. The Cork-based producer's first tune is 'Pass Real' with its dark bass and tech-step style. 'Livingdoom' has minimal rhythms and drilling bass that locks you into a groove as frazzled synths spray about with menace. After the pressurised eeriness of 'Tricky Dice' with its desolate industrial feel, 'Ruff Experience' closes down with battle-ready drums and vast bass. What a ride.
