Basic Soul Unit - "Black Ice" (Deetron re-edit)
Eddie Niguel - "Absolute" (Secret Cinema remix)
Review: With this 12", Midnight Shift demonstrates their ambitions with aplomb; the Singapore based label only launched last year but already they are expanding beyond their original remit with a newly established remix series. The first release in this series sees festival headliners Deetron and Secret Cinema rework the tracks from Basic Soul Unit and Eddie Niguel that launched Midnight Shift. Swiss house don Deetron focuses on Stuart Li's "Black Ice" turning in a re-edit that polishes the original's crystalline notes whilst beefing up the pulsing bassline. On the Dutch producer Secret Cinema aka Jeroen Verheij offers a driving, hypnotic rendition of Eddie Niguel's "Absolute".

Frozen Planet (7:16)
Review: The secret to John Heckle's impressive productivity is probably his admirable commitment to jamming with analogue hardware. Certainly, there's a loose, all-action immediacy to this outing on Midnight Shift. Tinged by acid throughout, and with more than a few nods to both Detroit futurism and vintage British "intelligent techno" (most obvious on the early Orbital style, stargazing shuffle of closer "Frozen Planet"), Wet Noises is arguably one of Heckle's strongest EPs to date. The title track itself is particularly potent, offering a surging combination of stomping techno drums and intoxicating acid lines, while the bleaker "Alpha Deux" sounds like the musical foretelling of some kind of post-apocalyptic future.

Review: Dutch native Intergalactic Gary is as cult and revered as they come. A cult selector from The Hague, he's been at the forefront of the West Coast Sound for more than 30 years. Though his studio productions are few and far between, they are never less than essential and this first solo outing in 15 years for Midnight Shift is very special indeed. Four deep space bangers made from rugged vintage machinery, "Signs Of Disarray" opens with the blistering electro of the title track, leading into the slow motion cosmic funk of "Invisible Intruder" and broken techno brilliance on "Nickel From The Bumper" before closing out with "Mystified", a brilliantly tripped out voyage to the edges of the solar system. Utterly timeless stuff.

Pan Pacific (8:43)

Black Pepper Crab (7:47)
Review: Established back in 2011, Singapore's Midnight Shift label has grown to reflect the diverse bookings across the house and techno spectrum that pepper their associated club nights. For example, the past four 12"s from the label have spanned Andreas Gehm, John Heckle, Eduardo De La Calle and Portuguese producer Kaspar. Up next it is Colin 'Mr. G' McBean whose Ternasek 12" arrives amidst a rich vein of killer singles from the man widely regarded as genuine UK house royalty. According to Midnight Shift, these three tracks were made after McBean was struck with inspiration on a visit to the Singaporean city of the same name, with aural markers of his time there sunk deep into the pulsing functionalism of the productions. As with the majority of Mr G material, this are prime club grade tech-edged house rollers.

The Driving Rain (5:25)
Wolfram (4:20)
Elements (4:58)
Wolfram (dub) (5:43)
Review: Nico recently minted his own Akita Club label with his Six Rooms EP, and now follows it up with more gold, this time on the Midnight Shift label outta Singapore. He demonstrates once more his mastery of rhythm, which is built from layers of intricate drum hits and hyper-speed loops. 'The Driving Rain' is impossibly infectious and restless, while 'Wolfram' nails icy minimalism and afro dub like no other. Ut also comes as a dub, but not before 'Elements', a dark, loopy, transcendental bit of primal techno hypnosis. Fans of Levity Sound et al. will lap this one up.

Review: Singaporean imprint Midnight Shift readies up another release, this time by Voitax co-head Paal. The Hamburg-based producer is now handed the reins for full creative curation over the course of six tracks on Soothing Songs For A Cultural Affair: from the contorted breakneck jungle of fierce opener 'Peace Keeper', to the body bashing bass onslaught of 'Problem with Privilege' to the mellowed subterranean breaks of 'Red Sky At Night' (featuring British producer Cressida) and the dystopian slow burner 'Bon Voyage' closing out proceedings.

Terrence Parker - "It Hurts"
Simon Hinter - "Leave" (original mix)
Simon Hinter - "Leave" (Philogresz remix)
Simon Hinter - "Finding Home"
Review: This is a curious split EP from Midnight Shift, pitting one Terrence Parker track alongside three from Simon Hinter (although one of these is a remix). Not that it matters, as four top shelf deep house offerings on one slab of wax can be no bad thing. Parker's "It Hurts" finds him in a particularly romantic mood, all sustained strings and heavy emotions over a steady chugging beat, while Hinter's A side jam "Leave" is a sumptuous jazz-inflected slice of stripped down house, with delicious piano licks and rubbery bass notes. Philogresz remixes that track into a more mechanical tech-house growler, and then Hinter follows up with the deeper, searching tones of "Finding Home".

Jack My Body (Factory mixx 1988) (4:25)
Review: Given that he only ever released one single, you'd be forgiven for being unfamiliar with Slick Master Rick - an early Chicago house producer who later found fame as Dance Mania-signed ghetto-house producer Houz'mon. Here, Singaporean label Midnight Shift has pulled off a coup by pairing his sought-after "Halloween House" cut - an early ghetto-acid smasher released in 1988 - with a trio of previously unreleased tracks recorded in the same period. Check first the stab-happy thump of "Can't Wait" - all glassy-eyed vocal samples and thunderous kick-drums - before turning your attention to the rubbery, TB-303-heavy jack of Jammin Gerald hook-up "Nightmare". Closing cut "Jack My Body", meanwhile, is a brilliantly sparse but heavy chunk of blistering ghetto-house.

Review: Veteran French producer Umwelt presents his latest opus on Singapore's Midnight Shift, following some great EPs by Nico and Paal on the label this year. Fear On The Dark Planet is a fitting title for this shadowy figure's style of dark electro and sci-fi soundscapes, presented across five apocalyptic tracks. From the dystopian, bass-heavy bounce of the title track, to the pummeling warehouse techno of 'Ravenous Horde' and its gnarly acid leading you through a maze of strobe lights, to the haunting ambient journey 'Gate Of Nothingness' on the flip - Umwelt's vision of the future sure looks bleak!

Review: Midnight Shift continues its fine run of form via a mini-album of bleak intensity from renowned modular electro/analogue rave fusionist Umwelt, an artist whose distinctive releases are always worth a listen. The French producer sets his stall out via title track "Superior Life Forms", an undeniably heavy and distinctively dystopian chunk of broken electro fuzziness, before reaching for even grimier electronics and gut-punching bass on "Computer Controlled". "Latent Existence" is a moody, beat-free soundtrack for urban decay, "Fragment" and closer "The Windfall" are teak-tough industrial techno stompers, while "Shadow Entity" is a suitably psychedelic slab of trippy acid electro. Not for those of a fragile disposition, but impressively intense and forthright nonetheless.

Review: Following the untimely death of acid house and electro producer Andreas Gehm last year, there was much discussion about what could be done to support his extended family. The result is this fine tribute, featuring contributions from some of the artists who knew him, or were inspired by the German's hardware-driven productions. Highlights come thick and fast, from Kink's poignant "1st Electric" - a fine combination of twinkling music box melodies, off-kilter drum machine hits and undulating acid lines - and the balls-out intensity of Mark Forshaw's Wink-esque "Further", to the lolloping acid techno of Tsuzing and breakbeat-driven fuzziness of Rivet's "Shards Will Shine".

Review: Having rounded off their fifth anniversary celebrations at the tail end of last year, Midnight Shift Records has decided to look to the future. In a bid to wet our appetite for releases yet to come, the Singapore-based stable has put together a killer compilation of "soon-come" sounds from label artists old and new. Highlights include the industrial strength stomp of Hodge and Gramrcy's Kowton-esque "Barnohl", the rolling, peak-time positivity of Mark Forshaw's "Power Grab", and the clanking, off-kilter lo-fi techno bounce of Innsyster. Those looking for more contemplative moments should check the gentle marimba melodies of Thelonious Harmonious's "Iron Beat", while electro freaks will definitely enjoy the cyber-sonic squelch of Amato's "Joie Automatique".
