Eine Schone Welt
Cat: 451058. Rel: 11 Nov 21

Funk/Reissues
Eine Schone Welt (3:15)
Versuche Zu Versteh'n (3:26)
Review: First released way back in 1970, 'Eine Schone Welt' is that rarest of beasts: a simply superb, German language psychedelic soul jam that has long been in-demand within the record collecting community. It's undoubtedly the single greatest work from sadly departed German singer Susan Aviles - a genuine gem rich in wah-wah and fuzz-tone guitars, twinkling piano riffs, crunchy breakbeats and stirring orchestration, all topped off with a powerful lead vocal. Over on the flip you'll find another sought-after Aviles nugget: German B-boy favourite 'Versuche zu versten'n', whose Incredible Bongo Band style drums come seeped in grandiose orchestration and energetic lead vocals.

Postcard From Bangladesh (4:09)
Review: Funk fans will of course know that The Vicious Seeds fail from St. Petersburg and for a while now they have been turning out 45s that mix up raw cinematic grooves and deep funk instrumentals. For this newest 7" they sign up vibraphonist Pavel Chiznik who brings with him plenty of flair on top of the well versed rhythm section. These two cuts explore some airy, uplifting and summery jazz vibes a la Roy Ayers with dope beats and plenty of sample-friendly drumbreaks. Add in a load of funky basslines, some carefully psyched-out guitars and lush vibes and you have a vital little 45rpm.

Sirocco (7")

Funk/Reissues
Sirocco (3:17)
Nymphea (3:13)
Review: This year, Russian outfit the Diasonics have delivered a swathe of seven-inch singles, each of which acts as a showcase for their unique "Hussar funk" sound - an "outernational" style blend of deep funk grooves, psych-funk flourishes and melodic refrains that draw on their native Eastern European musical culture. They're at it again on their first Mocambo outing, which opens with the stunning strains of 'Sirocco', where Pierre Henry style synth motifs and decidedly Russian melodies rise above booming bass guitar, crunchy drum grooves and surprisingly creepy jazz guitars. Turn to side B for the slightly bolder and arguably even creepier 'Nymphea', another solid slab of quirky deep funk that should appeal to those who like eccentric 1970s library music and unusual musical mutations.

The Scarab's Quest (instrumental) (3:31)
The Hornet's Nest (instrumental) (2:18)
Review: For the uninitiated, Eleven76 is a breakdance-friendly space-funk project helmed by Mighty Mocambos member Paul Elliott. This must-check "45" is the fluid combo's third single for Mocambo Records, but the first for two years. Lead cut 'The Scarab's Quest' is seriously heavy, with Incredible Bongo Band style percussion, woozy Moog lines and 1960s spy-funk guitar licks dancing atop a low-slung bassline and weighty funk drums. Elliott's love of heavy bass guitar lines and glassy-eyed 1960s guitars is further explored on flipside 'The Hornet's Nest', an exotic library funk number that sounds like it could have featured on the soundtrack to a turn-of-the-'70s heist movie.

TROY (4:10)
Review: Heroes of Limbo is a project from long-time collaborators Glenn Fallows, and Gram 'Canyon' Treldavs which takes cult classics and pop hits and renders them in a sharply styled strain of Afrobeat. On their last single the Happy Mondays and Disclosure all got the treatment to explosive effect, and this time around the band set their sights on hip-hop totems from Eric B & Rakim and Pete Rock & CL Smooth. 'Don't Sweat The Technique' become heady beatdowns for DJs and listeners alike to delight in, with the kind of artful re-versioning which will sneak under the radar until a tuned in ear picks up the vibration and joins the dots - the kind of moment dancefloor magic is made of. Don't miss out on this limited yellow pressing of the record either - one for the collectors!

Something's Missing (2:16)
St Pauli Second Line (2:33)
Keep It Movin' (3:11)
Review: If heavy and fuzzy funk is your bag, we'd heartily recommend checking out this straight-to-tape live session from Bjorn Wagner's long-serving Mighty Mocambos outfit. It was recorded at an in-store live performance at German store Groove City live December and comes complete with atmospheric crowd noise and a raw, heavyweight sound that only enhances the band's live credentials. Vocalist Nicola Richards makes her soulful presence felt on loose-limbed, breakbeat-driven deep funk opener "Something's Missing", before returning to lead the party on the wonderfully fiery and funky flipside "Keep It Movin". Sandwiched in between you'll find the slower, crunchier and more bass-heavy instrumental jam "St Pauli Second Line".

Review: The Mighty Mocambos follow on from their well recovered and futurist 2066 album from last summer with another vital new 7". This collection of musicians also records on Brooklyn's Big Crown Records in a more tropical guise known as Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band but are back in their original form for this one. 'The Take Off (part 1 - instrumental)' is a funky jumble of drums, organic percussion and ass-shaking rhythms. On the flips part two featuring a vocal from JSwiss that is even more ready to blow up your spot.

Breaker (3:28)
Let The Music Play (live) (3:50)
Review: Over recent years, Hamburg deep funk outfit the Mighty Mocambos have become a little obsessed with recording material tailor-made for inspiring breakdance battles. That trend continues on the band's latest must-check 45, which boasts two killer cuts for wannabe B-boys and B-girls. On the A-side they showcase a new original studio composition, 'Breaker': a righteous, breakbeat-driven heavy funk outing laden with restless Clavinet licks, relentless cowbells, red-hot horns, crisp guitar licks and breathless Hammond stabs. Arguably even better is the flip-side live recording of their cover of Shannon's 'Let The Music Play', which turns the freestyle classic into an energy-packed organic funk outing complete with steel pan melodies and hazy horns aplenty.

Moya Vode (part 2 - instrumental)
Review: Here's a rare soul and funk shindig; a collision of worlds between key players of the German scene. Singer-songwriter Mona, who recently moved from Ukraine to Germany with her production partner MC Fame, goes head-to-head with instrumental supergroup Hammerbrook Sound Machine (a five-member troupe boasting members of Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and the Mighty Mocambos plus MC Fame on Moog solo duties. There's even a jew's harp in it. A defiant single, 'Maya Vode' is a clear and crispy breakbeat-brimmer, perfect for segueing the ball into less mere-romantic, far sexier heights.

Heavy Soul (3:36)
Move It Up (0:12)
Review: With grooves as thick as molasses, Sound Stylistics' Heavy Soul 7" resurrects the soulful vibes of the 60s and 70s with remarkable authenticity as it journeys to the heart of vintage soul. Each track is a testament to the band's reverence for the classics, blending funky rhythms, gritty guitar licks, and horn-driven melodies. From the infectious energy and hard-assed funk of 'Heavy Soul' to the more laid-back coolness of 'Move It Up' the 45 offers two very different but equally brilliant sounds that serve as a timeless homage to the golden age of soul music that will captivate listeners old and new.

Their lineup features members from fabled funk and retro soul bands like The Brand New Heavies, Zero 7, Jamiroquai and more. 'The Message' & 'Freedom Sound' are both tracks from their highly regarded debut album Deep Funk, is a reissue of the first edition that was originally put out in 2009.
