Tour Trailer 2014
Review: German veterans Moderat are off on tour this spring, which is something of a rarity given the seeming difficulty in getting Modeselektor and Apparat together. As a precursor to the shows, they've decided to re-release II, last year's long awaited follow-up to their self-titled 2009 debut album. For those yet to fall for the original album's woozy charms - think dark but dreamy electronica, heady ambience and downbeat leftfield synth-pop - this expanded edition should be essential listening. The original album is bundled with a CD of instrumental versions, remixes and alternative takes, including an excellent Robag Wruhme version of "Bad Kingdom", and Jon Hopkins' skittering, intoxicating take on "Last Time". If that's not enough, they've also thrown in a DVD of promotional videos.

Review: Moderat return with a third single shaped offering from their 'overwhelmingly successful sophomore album II' and is centred around "Last Time", a track previously only available on the limited deluxe CD edition. One of the more downtrodden moments in the Moderat canon, Sascha Ring's capacity for wringing every last drop of emotion out of his voice is on full effect in "Last Time" which is only heightened by the pared down musical backing. Present here in original, instrumental and alternate versions, those looking for a lift will find it in the final quite epic remix from Jon Hopkins, which sounds like it should be played with a vast strobe light accompaniment.

Review: Given the hype that surrounded the release of the first Moderat set back in 2009, we can surely expect more of the same for this second outing from Apparat and Modeselektor. Those familiar with the first album's woozy blend of IDM, Thom Yorke indebted vocal dreaminess, porchlight techno and post-dubstep rhythms will immediately feel right at home. Online reviews have focused largely on II's atmospheric warmth, and the way in which the Berlin-based trio seems to have refined their sound. Both are valid critiques; certainly, there's a maturity and musical complexity to the album that betters much of their previous works. It's not much of a dancefloor set, but that's entirely the point; this is locked-in headphone listening for the wide-eyed generation.

Review: Gatefold 2LP ediiton: While their 50 Weapons imprint may be winding up, Modeselektor's Monkeytown imprint is still in full swing, releasing all sorts of interesting electronic music lately from producers as diverse as Robot Koch, Omar Souleyman and Howling. This time label head honchos Bronsert and Szary team up with good mate Sascha Ring aka Apparat for another session as well.. Moderat, of course! Highlights include the bittersweet and bass heavy pop inflections of "Bad Kingdom" featuring Ring's powerful vocals, the epically future beats of "Let In The Light" or "Ilona" and the upbeat dusty deep house of "Milk". Superb production on display throughout the album and don't forget to check out the killer remixes by Skee Mask and Benjamin Damage (amongst others) available soon as well.

90% Wasser (5:07)
Review: Moderat's newest album III is out and the second single to be released by the amazing trio of Gernot Bronsert, Sascha Ring and Sebastian Szary is "Running", an emotive pop inflected electronica number showing off (mainly) the fine vocal talents of Ring whose emotional performance is electrifying! On the flip is "90% Wasser" a sombre broken beat number with cinematic qualities; just as emotive with its soaring strings later that build up to an amazing crescendo.

Review: Back in 2017, Moderat decided to take an extended break and bowed out with a now mythical performance in front of 17,000 Berliners. More Data, their surprise fourth album and welcome return to action, was largely recorded during lockdown and inspired (in part, at least) by feelings of isolation and information overload. The resultant music is typically hard-to-pigeonhole, offering a unique fusion of IDM, skewed electronic pop (see the uneasy but excellent 'Easy Prey'), dystopian breakbeat techno dreaminess ('Drum Glow'), Radiohead-ish fuzziness ('Soft Edit'), trance-inducing dancefloor hypnotism (the wonky and timeless 'Numb Bell') and weighty, heart-aching electronica ('Doom Hype'). It's good to have them back.

Review: Moderat performed what they knew would be one of their last concerts in 2017 - at least, for a while, anyway. Having been in need for a hiatus, COVID restrictions kicked in and the pressure to juggle performing and music-making was off. Thus came 'MORE D4TA', an album that strove after connection and collaboration in an era where the potential for such was stunted. Now finally finished and polished, the album comes for all to enjoy, demonstrating some of the duo's most focused and pop-structured production and modular chops.
