Review: Black Grape was founded by former members of The Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder and Bez (a.k.a. Mark Berry). New band members included rappers Paul "Kermit" Leveridge, Carl "Psycho" McCarthy, drummer Ged Lynch (all three from the first wave of UK hip-hop and influential Hulme, Manchester act Ruthless Rap Assassins), guitarist Paul Wagstaff (from the Paris Angels), and Oli "Dirtycash" Dillon on ocarina. It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah contains ten catchy songs, most prominently the album's preceding hit single 'In The Name Of The Father', with influences from indie-pop, alternative, funk, disco, with rough guitar, rapping all glued together and produced by American Danny Saber. On release in 1993, the debut album immediately charted at the very top of the UK Albums chart and was certified Platinum.

Made up of former Adam & The Ants members and teenage singer Annabella Lwin, they whipped up a powerful twist on the new wave template in which Burundi-style drumming, twanging Americana and post-punk scratchiness collided with pop hooks. If you can't get enough of that era of music, you will surely love discovering or re-discovering this breakthrough album from one of popular music's true curios.

Review: 'Pearl' is the headsier shoegaze fan's classic of choice, and it's all thanks to Chapterhouse's lack of fear in incorporating hard industrial elements to their squeeze-waxen, sunsoaked dream pop sound. The original single-EP for 'Pearl' consisted of three hip-hop-tempo electronic shoegaze songs, and had a brightness to them that could only be rivalled by their contemporaries Lush or Ride. This reissue comes to translucent yellow vinyl, much like the colour of refracted light off moths' wings or duneside beach water.

Review: It has been around 13 years since most people will have had a chance to hear much about Chapterhouse. Finishing their reunion tour in 2010, you can't help but feel there was still a fair bit left unsaid even after that. The outfit may not be top on everyone's list of late-1980s and earl-mid-1990s remembrances, but were more than deserving of that final two-year stint on the road, and this reissue package.
Formed in 1987, and immediately lumped in with a then-nascent shoegaze scene, the Reading-born team aren't actually that easy to describe. Dreamy, at times verging on opiate, yes, but arguably bigger, rockier and looser than that might suggest. Here you get two of their final singles, 'Don't Look Now' and 'She's A Vision', alongside two top reworks of 'Deli' - one experimental psych offering, the other bound for Balearic sets.

Review: In all honesty, moving straight from the rousing, slightly grinding wall of sound with which 'We Are The Beautiful' signs off, into the lunging bass of a stomping Spooky dub edit of the same track, is both unexpected and a bit jarring. Review: Although they're widely considered to be a shoegaze band, Chapterhouse were quite wide-ranging in their sound, and that's best demonstrated on their run of EPs. Music On Vinyl continue their mission to reissue all these landmark records from the early 90s, and so we come to the third record, Mesmerise. Ahead of their debut album, this four-track selection speaks to the unique space the band occupied between the baggy sound from Manchester and the ethereal grandeur of shoegaze. It's a sound which has a strong nostalgic tint from a modern perspective, truly a product of the time with a rose-tinted power to sweep you away. Just put on 'Precious One' and try to resist the sentimental swell.

Review: A great choice by Music On Vinyl - whom at this point have proven their mettle at sating the desires of almost any type of past music enjoyer - Chapterhouse's 'Whirlpool' is the debut studio album by the English shoegaze band, and thoroughly deserves this case of retrospection. In just nine tracks, the quartet of Andrew Sheriff, Stephen Patman, Simon Rowe and Ashley Bates established a hugely maximal sound, stylistically nailing the form by pairing its vacuuming vocal washes with more propulsive, hard-limited mixes and masters, informed by industrial and dance music most notably. Contemporaries of similarly tersely-named bands like Lush, Moose, Ride and Curve, Chapterhouse were indeed the most multi-syllabic, not to mention least restrained band out at the time; standouts 'Pearl', 'Autosleeper' and 'Falling Down' nailed the explosion of '90s indie ferment and the overflow of emotions that came with the decade.

Review: Australian alternative rock band The Church put out their sixth studio album in 1990. It's best known for the breakout rock hit 'Metropolis' and performed commercially well overall after the successes of 1988 hit album Starfish, Gold Afternoon Fix . An interesting nugget for fact fans is that this album is their first of the band's not to feature a 12 string guitar as Marty Wilson-Piper's instrument got stolen on a previous tour. The subtle change in sound didn't derail the band and they continued to pick up more and more fans for their lilting grooves and lyrical subjects such as love, loss and plenty in between. The band were induced into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010.

Review: It's 1993 and everything is different from today. But one thing that has remained constant between then and now is the sublime work presented on this, the second studio album from English troupe Cranes. Stopping well short of becoming overblown, while confident enough to break through the restraints that can often make music like this feel inauthentic, the Portsmouth-formed outfit hit the nail on the head when it came to the emerging dream pop scene at the time this was released. Then they flipped expectations on their head. So while numbers like 'Cloudless' and 'Far Away' effortlessly create opiate atmospheres, making listeners feel like they're cruising into the stratosphere, not a care in the world, there's plenty to drag you back down to the grit and grime of Earth, too. 'Clear', 'Sun & Sky' and 'Adrift' all take us to places close to garage rock, only with added density and an air of the cinematic.

Review: MOV's all-in-one Curve reissues campaign continues strongly with this new iteration of 'Blindfold', the industrial shoegaze band's debut EP. Establishing the sound they would inevitably grow into, and more or less own, for at least a decade to come, tracks such as 'Blindfold' are as emotional as they are driving, pitting Liz Fraser-esque vocals (courtesy of titan Toni Halliday) against industrial hip-hop/rock beats. The hip-hop influence is further bolstered by a rare rap feature on a shoegaze tune: that of JC-001, the one-time 'fastest rapper in the world'. The formula of a Curve track should be clear enough on finishing this EP; stark, mysterious, sexy and strange, and always with a sense of self-assured, yet pensive, forward propulsion.

Review: Curve's music represents the electronicization of shoegaze, coming at a turning point in the 1990s in which post-industrial sounds and hoover guitars came naturally together. While the duo's sound seems contemporary, 'Frozen', their second EP, came relatively early on in their career. Imagine MBV but with well-mixed instruments and perhaps even a suitability for the club environment - these ingredients form the basis of the vindictive 'Zoo' or the rapturous 'Coast Is Clear'. Review: Cuckoo was their second full length from Curve - Toni Halliday on vocals and guitar with Dean Garcia - and saw its release in 1993. This album was heavier, focused and featured stronger, more aggressive rhythms that evolved from their first album. Heavily influenced by bombastic urban and electronic beats but favouring shoegaze effects on the guitars, making for a unique combination that made Cuckoo stand out from the rest, ultimately predating similar sounds from bands like Garbage. This album holds key tracks like the amazing 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' as well as the singles 'Missing Link' and 'Super Blaster'. The effects of Curve are still being felt today by those who discover them and fans of the producer Flood should definitely be aware of this album if they are not already. This reissue comes on limited numbered 180- Gram pink & purple vinyl LP complete with an insert.

Review: Curve are best known among music lovers as one of the few English 90s bands to span the cross-section of industrial dance music and shoegaze and to bring that sound to the alt-mainstream. Review: The late Gabi Delgado fronted the Dusseldorf duo DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft), and in his honour, this reissue of their experimental sixth album 1st Step To Heaven comes courtesy of Music On Vinyl. Janky and fairlight-hued, as was the case with much of 80s dance music, the music pines after sex like an object to be pursued in and of itself. "You make me want to have sex" goes the refrain of opener 'Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi', while 'Sex Up' continues the charge with a dubby, Balearic remix, continuing the mantra throughout the album. A fantastic look back on a weird and provocative duo.

Review: The Darling Buds were an alternative rock band from Newport, Wales. They formed in 1986, were named after the H. E. Bates novel The Darling Buds of May and Erotica is their third and final album, released a few weeks before Madonna's album of the same name in October 1992. The album contained the US single, 'Long Day In The Universe', which was featured on the soundtrack for the Mike Myers film, So I Married an Axe Murderer. Erotica is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on translucent yellow coloured vinyl and includes an insert.

Review: It could have all been so different when Death In Vegas first formed. Richard Fearless and Steve Hellier spawned the project in 1994 and got signed under the name Dead Elvis, but legal wrangling got in the way and they used the name for their debut album instead. Now Music On Vinyl have repressed the 1997 classic so we can revel in the grizzled take on big beat and trip hop the pair cooked up. It's very much of its time, but there's a snarl to the production which sets Death In Vegas apart from their peers at the time, opting for the dive bar ambience over the festival main stage you'd hear when playing The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield. For that reason Dead Elvis has aged very well indeed.

Review: The Fall's Mark E. Smith was having a rather torrid time even by his own standards when the band made The Marshall Suite in 1999. He was fresh back from a US tour on which he had been fighting with fellow band members on stage and was later arrested after carrying on the shenanigans back at the hotel. The album itself builds on the techno sounds The Fall had explored on the preceding album Levitate but also with something of a return to the rockabilly-influenced sound from earlier Fall line-ups. Cuts like 'The Crying Marshal' are as strange and complex as they come with thumping jungle drums powering it along.

Review: The Light User Syndrome was the 18th - yes, 18th, record from legendary alternate outfit The Fall. It came on Jet Records in 1996 at a time when the legendary band leader Mark E. Smith was at his most alcoholically antagonistic. As such it was a difficult time for the band but one that still bore fruit with Smith on most of the vocals but producer and performer Mike Bennett, drummer Karl Burns and guitarist Brix Smith also stepped up to the mic. Review: The Fall apparently weren't thrilled with Rough Trade focusing so many resources on the Smiths, not least as it meant the full length video they wanted to make to accompany this, their sixth studio album, would not be possible, while the other band got the money to make one. Mark E Smith and company's response was to produce their own, and in many ways the 52-minute Perverted By Language Bis, directed by multifaceted French enigma Claude Bessy, remains one of the archetypal pieces of Fall iconography. The music isn't bad on its own, either, opening on the relentlessly catchy 'Eat Y'self Fitter', once described as "endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus." 'Neighbourhood of Infinity' then picks up the pace, and grit, and we're soon in deep. A record that impresses musically and in terms of forward thinking production (see: 'Garden') without sacrificing the grass roots energy of post punk at the time.
