El Corredor Del Jaguar
Cat: NYCT 7030. Rel: 27 Oct 16
International
  1. Pajaro (2:52)
  2. Tamborero (3:59)
  3. Frio Severo (3:21)
  4. Chimbita Theme (3:29)
Review: These days, it's hard to find contemporary artists making real, unadulterated psych-funk. Combo Chimbita are one such outfit; they're masters of their genre, and they have a real skill for amalgamating the best of South American and African rock. El Corredor De Jaguar comes out courtesy of Names You Can Trust, and its four sublime tunes are a true breath of fresh air among so much sub-standard, 70s rip-offs. "Pajaro" sets the scene with a cool, moody bass and intricate percussion knots, and "Tamborero" picks up the tempo and injects a glorious wave of Latino suaveness into the track's vocals. Our favourite piece has to be "Frio Severo", though, with its stepping drums and hummable guitar hook, but "Chimbita Theme" does a wonderful job of closing this stupendous 7" off with a wild and psychedelic infusion of guitars and tribal drumming. Highly recommended!

Cat: NYCT 7007. Rel: 21 Jan 13
Funk/Reissues
  1. La Cumbia (original)
  2. La Cumbia (Tahira Afro-Cumbia remix)
Review: Names You Can Trust presents No. 3 in its series of New Cumbia vinyl 45s. This latest release features an original track from Argentinian record junkie, producer and creator of the Soulfood parties in Buenes Aires, Doctor Stereo (aka Ezequiel Lodeiro), as well as a remix from Brazil''s DJ Tahira.

Doctor Stereo marks his debut on NYCT with a swinging summertime heatrock. La Cumbia Perdida is an exploration into early 1960s Cumbia roots, full of irresistible hip hugging piano licks against a contemporary backbone of heavy drums and squelchy synthesized effects.

DJ Tahira (behind the excellent Fumãca Jazz Remix of GRC''s Secret Stash on the NYCT Remixes EP) shifts the original track ever so slightly into Afro-Colombian territory, subtly adding a layer of quintessential Afro-Beat inspired guitar licks and a deft touch of deep subterranean bass.

  3. Presto - "Stargazer" (Midnight Lab Band remix)
Review: Names You Can Trust cull the three most popular tracks from their Spring digital only remixes compilation and spread them across one lovely 12". Tru Thoughts stalwart TM Juke lays on the funk breaks thick via his remix of Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, whilst Bastard Jazz boss DJ DRM drops a bongo heavy laidback house refix of Midnight Lab Band’s "Twilight Reprise". On the flip Midnight Lab Band turn Presto’s "Stargazer" into a midtempo dubby disco groove.

  2. Guajiro
Review: Pioneering their very own 'psychedelic salsa' sub-genre, New York based collective La Mecanica Popular are in a league of their own. Fully live but clearly adept at layering their sounds for a polished studio finish, there's a rich trippiness running across both tracks thanks to some mesmerising weeping mandolin twangs and weaves of pert percussion. "La Paz Del Freak" is all about the carnival piano hook and big bold vocal harmonies while "Guajiro" is a much more free-spirited, jazz-inclined affair. Both are exceptional.

Review: Since helping set off the Money Studies label with the fantastic Monk's Dream mix CD, Monk One has gone on to make quite a few mixes, each time switching up the genre and flexing the strength of his ridiculously large record collection. This one features the section of his basement which might be most dear to his heart - top shelf disco records. Monk-One is the author of Wax Poetics' popular 12 x 12" deep disco column, so you know the knowledge (and collection) are there to back it up, and his selection is impeccable as always. Like the true DJ of the people that he is, Monk-One has included genre-defining tracks and overlooked treats from big name artists, as well as the best of those rare collector's pieces. Artists include MFSB, Herbie Hancock, Caress, Machine, Geraldine Hunt, Mantus, Bunny Sigler, Harvey Mason, Bionic Boogie, Mystic Merlin, Roberta Flack and more. 23 tracks total, comes in smooth digipak packaging.

Review: Since 2008, the Names You Can Trust label has provided discerning listeners with a succession of left-of-centre dancefloor gems. Rooted in hip-hop, funk, soul and Latin beats, their 7" singles and occasional 10" outings - see the brilliant recent Tyrone Evans single, "Rise Up" - have become essential listening. This action-packed first label compilation tells the story so far, showcasing a thrilling range of sounds, from the Afro-funk and block party beats of GRC, and the Latin revivalism of Frente Cumberio, to the shameless Ramsey Lewis jazz-funk of Doctor Stereo. Names You Can Trust: genuinely a name you can trust. Who'd have thought, eh?
