Deep House
  1. Just Livin' (6:53)
  2. Dream Scape (6:29)
  3. Union City Nights (8:04)
  4. Rain (7:49)
Review: There's a bountiful amount of chunkiness to be savoured on this prime reissue of classic Kerri Chandler, reaching back to '98 and the bastion of soul-enriched house music, Nervous Records, to deliver the kind of heat that has made Chandler one of the undisputed greats of the scene. "Just Livin'" positively oozes class with its wigged out synth lines, dense and clattering drums and unmistakable bump, while "Dream Scape" takes things in a softer direction buffeted along by a pumping beat while the melodies stay smooth and sweet on top. "Union City Nights" injects a little Latin passion into proceedings, and "Rain" is of course one of Chandler's most iconic moments, all shuffling hats, delicate chimes and soulful vox. A highly worthy reissue.

Deep House
  1. Moi Honey (SRVD remix) (8:46)
  2. Moi Honey (SRVD dub) (8:46)
Review: Long running and legendary house label Nervous has never let up over the years and this new remix of Newbody by SRVD aka Rekids bosses, Radio Slave and Partrick Mason, is a hitting slab of House. The A side is built on block rocking beats with raves stabs and plenty of raw percussive energy. Vocal yelps and jacking 909s add to the energy of the whole thing and ensure maximum destruction. The flip side houses a dub that is no less forceful or weighty, but a little more stripped back.

  1. The Nervous Track (Ballsy mix) (6:30)
  2. The Nervous Track (Horny mix) (6:32)
  3. The Nervous Track (Yellow mix) (6:25)
  4. The Nervous Track (UN mix) (6:29)
Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.

Bucktown (7")
Cat: NER 24875. Rel: 05 Mar 20
Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Bucktown (4:15)
  2. Bucktown (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: Given the recent upsurge in interest in '90s "golden era" hip-hop, we're not all that surprised to see a new pressing of this lesser-celebrated NYC gem - an early highlight from the now long-serving Smif-N-Wessun crew. It first landed in 1994 on house imprint Nervous' relatively short-lived rap offshoot Wreck. "Bucktown" is reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest cuts from the period, with on-point raps rising above suitably dusty beats and prominent samples from Jack Bruce's 1970 jazz-rock classic "Born To Be Blue". This seven-inch single version boasts both vocal and instrumental versions with the latter naturally allowing the smoky jazz samples a little more room to breathe.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Wontime (vocal) (4:42)
  2. Wontime (instrumental) (4:46)
Review: Regular Juno customers will no doubt have noticed the recent spate of Smif-N-Wessun reissues from Wreck Records. This is the fourth "45" pressing in an ongoing series that also includes similarly must-have golden-era hip-hop gems as "Bucktown" and "Sound Bwoy Bureill". "Wontime" was first released in 1995 and sees the NYC duo spit typical thoughtful, on-point rhymes over a beat crafted from little more than the James Brown "Funky President" drum break, some deep and drowsy chords and occasional snatches of Spoonie G's early hip-hop classic "Spoonie Rap". That deep, head-nodding beat can be heard in full on the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Sound Bwoy Bureill (vocal) (4:25)
  2. Sound Bwoy Bureill (instrumental) (4:24)
Review: Classic Brooklyn hip-hop alert! First released on 12" way back in 1995, Smif-N-Wessun's "Sound Bwoy Bureill" is a golden-era treat. It sees Tek and Steele - then fresh faces on the scene rather than the grizzled veterans they are today - spout forth over a killer beat produced by Evil Dee and Mr Walt. That beat is sparse but heavy, with crunchy kicks and snares being accompanied by little more than reggae vocal samples, moody chords, occasional electric guitar notes and a suitably deep bassline. You can hear it loud and clear on the flipside instrumental version, though it also provides a near perfect bed for the duo to showcase their flows on the superior A-side vocal mix.

  1. How He Works (feat Nico Vega - Nico Funk dub 2) (5:40)
  2. How He Works (feat Nico Vega - Nico Funki dub 1) (5:32)
  3. Can't Slow Down (4:57)
  4. Vince Montana Tribute (7:08)
Review: Louie Vega's forthcoming "Expansions In The NYC" album was apparently created in part as a tribute to the roots of house music as he sees them. You'll find plenty of nods to classic styles of old in this second sampler EP. The A-side boasts two thrill-a-minute, sweat-soaked "Nico Funki" dubs of "How He Works" - muscular and forthright affairs rich in squelchy proto-house bass, righteous vocal samples and a nagging, almost familiar piano riff. The fun continues on side B via the breezy brilliance of "Can't Slow Down" - a fine slab of organic, disco-tinged house in Vega's now familiar style - and the superb "Vince Montana Tribute", a cut in the style of the vibraphone player and Salsoul arranger complete with Candido style disco drums.
