Review: Network continue their 30th Anniversary celebrations with an in demand re-issue of the first record they ever put out. Neal Howard was the man behind it and the Chicago artist hit gold with his soulful machine sounds. 'Indulge' (club House mix) sounds like a house version of the iconic Strings of Life, with the deep mix only slightly dials back the bumping beats and joyous chords. Bad Boy Bill then steps up with a mix of 'To Be Or Not To Be' with gurgling bass and computerised melodies that are bright and brilliant. The aforementioned Derrick May then mixes with his slick sense of hi tech soul present and correct.

Ahnonghay
Ahnonghay (translucent orange vinyl 12")
Cat: NWKT 22OR. Rel: 06 Oct 21
Techno
  1. Ahnonghay (Carl Craig remix) (7:25)
  2. Ahnonghay (Dave Clarke remix) (5:55)
  3. Ahnonghay (Kevin Saunderson original Reese mix) (7:04)
Review: Legendary 90s dance band Inner City had a brief stay at the Network label that produced some classic recordings. Here, three techno icons serve up their own contemporary interpretations, with Planet E boss Carl Craig going first. He flips 'Ahnonghay' into a steely, metallic, train track groove that hustles and bustles you into action without ever boiling over. UK Baron Dave Clarke gets much more physical, his frosted synths whipping about next to jacked up perc that is primed for peak time floors. Last of all, Inner City main man Kevin Saunderson draws things out deep, with steamy vocals and future soul colouring his work.

Made In Detroit (B-STOCK)
Cat: NEXUS 212 (B-STOCK). Rel: 05 Mar 20

Techno
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped, also the record has very light surface marks, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

During their time as Nexus 21, Altern-8 pair Mark Archer and Chris Peat were given the opportunity to head to Detroit and record with some of their techno heroes, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May included. "Made In Detroit" presents these rare and significant recordings for the first time, offering a suite of tracks that fix UK-style bleep melodies (all the rage in late 1989/early 1990) to the kind of fizzing rhythms, warm bass and futuristic electronics then popular in the Motor City. There are two versions of house-tempo standout "Don't Do It Like That" (one with a whispered lead vocal by Ann Saunderson), while the clanking and metallic "Nexus" and more ghostly "No Statues" accurately fuse the best bits of both British and American techno at the time.

Innovator: Soundtrack For The Tenth Planet
Cat: NWKT 21R. Rel: 07 Feb 20
Techno
  1. The Dance (7:14)
  2. Strings Of Life (7:36)
  3. Beyond The Dance (6:59)
  4. Sinister (6:37)
  5. Wiggin (5:30)
  6. Nude Photo (5:56)
  7. Hand Over Hand (13:01)
Review: 2020 marks the 30th birthday of Network Records, a label that did arguably more than any other in the early 90s to champion both US and UK techno. As part of their celebrations they'll be reissuing some key singles and albums from their catalogue, starting with this 1991 compilation of key Derrick May productions. Now stretched across two slabs of wax rather than one to guarantee a louder cut, "Innovator" contains a wealth of vital early Motor City techno classics, from the acid-powered insanity of "Nude Photo" and the rushing, piano-heavy rush of "Strings of Life", to the thrilling sci-fi futurism of "Wiggin" and the deep techno warmth of "Hand Over Hand".

Bells Of NY (reissue)
Bells Of NY (reissue) (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: NWKT 23. Rel: 23 Sep 21
Funky/Club House
  1. Bells Of NY (House 2 House mix) (8:52)
  2. Bells Of NY (Summertime mix) (4:15)
  3. Bells Of NY (Xen Mantra Beefy Bells mix) (6:12)
  4. I Feel High (12" club mix) (6:34)
Review: Slo Moshu's 'Bells Of NY' is one of house music's most revered anthems. It is an iconic 90s tune that blew up every club upon release, and came with bogus producer credits in order to create some mystique. Network ally Andrew Komi is actually the man herbed the beats, and he told all manner of fantastical stories to the UK press who phoned up to hear more about the seminal tune. Here it gets reissued with various different mixes, all of which are explosive. There are the chattery snares and big piano chords of the House 2 House mix, a raved up and turbo-bass version from Xen Mantra's Beefy Bells mix and more besides.
