Review: Back in the 1970s, Boris Gardiner was digging deep and tilling his dub fields and often coming up with real treasure. This second volume of Ultra Super Dub on Now Again is a mega rare collection of work from Gardiner, a Jamaican bass player, bandleader, songwriter and singer of great repute. This is the first time this one has been reissued and it comes with great context in an extensive booklet. It is one of the landmark albums of his career so it's great to have it back in print.

Review: You can always count on Egon's Now-Again label to bring the finest curios from music's hidden history into the reach of the record buying public. On this occasion they're looking to the work of Jamaican legend Boris Gardiner, a singer, bassist and guitarist with a long and winding history through the beating heart of reggae culture. Ultra Super Dub is the rarest of rare dub treasures, pulled from Gardiner's prolific mid 70s era and originally issued by a Miami-based label in an incredibly short run. On it, you can expect to hear superlative, skeletal versions of classics from Otis Redding, Jimmy 'Bo' Horne and many more. Of course, the sonic treatment is top-notch on this reissue, and there's in-depth writing from Jeff Mao to take you into the world these versions came from. This is how a reissue should be done.

Review: Candido Y Su Movimiento's cult favourite album Palos De Fuego album is a rhythmic journey through the vibrant landscapes of Afro-Cuban jazz and Latin music that was first released in the 1970s. It superbly showcases the virtuosity of Candido Camero, a percussion maestro often hailed as the "Father of Modern Conga Drumming" as the album pulsates with infectious beats, intricate rhythms, and soulful melodies, all of which embody the essence of Afro-Cuban traditions while embracing contemporary influences. As a testament to Candido's enduring impact on the genre, Palos De Fuego stands tall and is a timeless exploration of percussive brilliance that continues to captivate and inspire Latin jazz lovers worldwide.

Review: He might be pushing 50, but Coz Littler certainly knows how to brew up a good noise or two. Fusing analogue with digital, space rock with breakbeats, ambient with electro and shoving them all through myriad fuzzy effects units, one blast on his album (his fourth as Chop) is a genre / planet jumping trip that's impossible to tire of. Highlights include the alien space radio dial twisting glitcher "The Electronic Brain" the somnambulant Orbesque textures of "Feedback" and the breakbeat mentalism of "Bow Down To The Mutant". Review: There's a mad story behind this 70s funk covers album... East Of Underground were a group of disillusioned GI's waiting to return from Vietnam. Knowing this gives the set a real sense of gravitas. But even if you didn't know that, the covers are a captivating listen, laced with raw unpolished musicianship and emotive harmonies. Highlights include the faltering highs of their version of Carole King and the dusty, crackly grooves of Rare Earth but it's all worth checking. And indeed owning.

Review: In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the US army held a 'battle of the bands' contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East Of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield and Funkadelic. The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, and the devouring drums...

Review: RECOMMENDED
Dreaming With Alice was first recorded in 1971, and released one year later. Debutant Mark Fry was only 19 years old, and Italian imprint IT put it out - an RCA sub label. Critics liked it, as did fans of deep dive psychedelic folk. But the era wasn't short of those kinds of sounds, and with this in mind it's something of a phenomena that the album resurfaced almost 40 years later as a repressing spurred on by originals selling for well over €1,500.

This is now the second reissue, and copies will not stick around for very long, for good reason. Although audibly naive, there's a purity here that you don't always find. Pared back to just acoustic guitar and vocals, aside from a few more complex pieces like the wonderfully weird and immersive 'The Witch', it's just a genuinely fantastic listen. Oh, and the title track being broken up and placed throughout the record is a strange but interesting idea, too.

Review: Co-produced by none other than James Brown and featuring a band led by fellow funk/soul legend Dave Matthews, The Grodeck Whipperjenny's sole album has long been considered something of a must-have by heavy funk fans. Original copies have tended to be hard to come by, so this Record Store Day reissue from Now Again Records, which comes complete with a booklet telling the story of the 1970 set, should be an essential purchase. It's a curiously psychedelic affair, with string-laden, near symphonic moments (see the almost entirely beat-free "Conclusions" being joined by cuts that explore spiraling funk-rock ("Sitting Here On A Tongue") and acid-fired psychedelic rock ("Why Can't I Go Back").

Review: Wendell Harrison is an icon of Detroit's jazz heritage, not least as part of the Tribe collective. Following his collaborative album with Phil Ranelin in 1972, he stepped out as bandleader for the confrontational An Evening With The Devil, bringing a level of controversy and aggressive playing which undoubtedly ruffled feathers on its release. With Marcus Belgrave on flugelhorn, Ranelin on trombone, Charles Moore on trumpet, William Austin on bass and Ike Daney on drums, this important piece of Motor City jazz history gets a fresh lease of life via Now Again, sounding shocking and supernatural in equal measure, with moments of snatched beauty amidst the madness.

Review: Two albums deep, Karl Hector's troupe continue to join the dots between territories, decades and genres with hypnotic aplomb. A frenzy of Middle Eastern arrangements, densely weaved psychedelic motifs and super-tight instrumentation, each track spins a gorgeous hazy yarn. From the sunset serenade "Spirit Of Gine" to the fuzzier, off-kilter freneticism of "Transition T" via the overlapping melodies and yearning flutes of "Samai Thaqil" and the proggier, guitar-led "Nibunga", Unstraight Ahead carves a very clear path deep into the most unique, timeless pastures.

Can't Stand The Pressure
Review: Spraying speaker canvases with their unique blend of Afro funk, jazz and classic psychedelia, Jay Whitefield's Karl Hector project paints from a strictly international sound palette. "Samai" sets the scene with spatial off-beat Asian twirls, all tightly plucked sitar strings and wailing strings while "Transition A" takes the mood deeper again with playful marimba pokes and fruity bursts of pipes. Elsewhere we get freaked out with a Hammond-meets-marimba fusion of "Circles" before diving deep into a full-flavoured Frimpong funk homage with Ghanaian grooves galore. "Can't Stand The Pressure" ends the set with the most western motif of the bunch, rolling with a bluesy subdued Booker T funk flavour.

Review: Two long players in the space of 12 months? 2013 really has been a great year to be a Heliocentrics fan. While Now Again appear to be filing this under 'EP', with nine tracks and an alluringly cyclical intro/outro narrative it's so much more than your conventional extended player. Highlights abound throughout this fuzzy, far-away psychedelic session but the distorted bass runs and muffled moaning guitars is a cosmic jam of Woodstockian proportions while "Thunder & Lightning" takes the dark art of reverberation to a whole a new spaced-out level. Press play and prepare to be consumed.

Review: US eight-piece Heliocentrics have long been regarded as talented musical mavericks - an exceptional live outfit whose freakish, psychedelic blend of influences results an intoxicating fusion of freestyle jazz, dub, funk, Afrobeat, hip-hop, post-punk disco and cinematic atmospherics. This fourth full-length is arguably their strongest yet, thanks principally to their experimental, no-holds barred approach. Out-there, atmospheric and inventive throughout, 13 Degrees of Reality sounds like an unlikely jam session between Sun Ra, Material, Ennio Morricone, John Carpenter and early Cinematic Orchestra. There can be no better praise than that.

Review: Welcome to the deepest of space... There's no return from this one! The Heliocentrics and original 'badasssss' Melvin Van Peebles first mooted this collaboration six years ago. Finally, their stars have aligned and the end result is a concept of cosmic beauty. Deep immersive jazz, it's the perfect bedrock for Melvin's smoky narrative. Exploring space and the idea of being happy to be lost in it, the narrative is weaved perfectly over twelve captivating chapters. Ready for take off?

Review: The sounds of Johnny! have played a significant part in the popularity of afro beat over the last fifteen years. Quietly and tastefully, JJ Whitefield has been responsible for releasing a plethora of Ghanaian rock, including the country's most recent sensations, the incredibly talented Ebo Taylor. Since the 90s, this guys hasn't stopped releasing heat for a single minute, and his collaboration with Now Again has been one of the best and most consistent partnerships of the last decade. Along with Ebo Taylor, his on Henry, and percussionist-singer, Eric Owusu, Whitefield's Johnny! can do absolutely now wrong and, if this new single "Ago" is anything to go by, these guys are among the few making quality afro rock in the present day. The tune is rugged, lo-fi and a little hazy, bringing together elements of Zamrock and psych in the best possible way; there's also an instrumental for you on the flip.

Review: Unsung funk and soul songwriter who worked with Barry White, Al Green, Eddie Kendricks and many more, Richard Marks' 15 year repertoire is delivered in one full strength package for the first time courtesy of Now Again. Over seven years of hard researching, negotiating and compiling (he never released any albums or even granted interviews), this is the ultimate collection of a hard working musician who did all the right things but never got the spotlight his peers experienced. From the hazy blues funk of tracks like "Funky Four Corners" to the slap-happier struts and shakes of tracks such as "Never Satisfied" via the more poignant, heartfelt reflective compositions like "Ups & Downs". Unsung... But certainly not forgotten, this entire document is a detailed and respectful work of art in itself.

Review: There have been many 'Tribe Records'-es over the years, but perhaps none were so eminent than the one that existed in '70s Detroit, which gave rise to the release of Harold McKinney's debut album here. On 'Voices And Rhythms Of The Creative Profile', the famous jazz pianist lended a new character to the term 'spiritual jazz', bringing energy and flair - and lots and lots of instrumentation - to the fore, rather than mere sentiment and emotion. This reissue, featuring heavenly gems like 'In The Moog', also features a booklet telling the story of the label from the ground up.

The Stones Throw offshoot was responsible for a much called for 2009 reissue of the duo's first album Away With Melancholy - released in typically limited quantities via Jazzman. Two years on and the duo come forth with some fifteen tracks of new material which is delightfully presented across two ten inches housed in a veritable book of a gatefold sleeve. Inside you get a typically expert range of dusty funk, retro psychedelia and library breaks with the final neck snapping track "Biscuits" a particular highlight.

Review: Second time around for Tribe Records founder and spiritual jazz fusionist Phil Ranelin's sophomore solo set, 1976's Vibes From The TR13E. Recorded and released in 1976, the album features Ranelin and an impressive cast of musical collaborators join the dots between soul-jazz, modal, spiritual and free-jazz on a set that adds occasional moments of cacophonous intensity (particularly within epic flipside cut 'He's The Only One We Knew', a genuinely free-wheeling, otherworldly jazz classic) to a set that's otherwise rich in good grooves, inspired instrumentation and subtle cosmic messaging. Ranelin's starring role includes providing some sublime trombone parts, an aspect of his musical personality that often gets overlooked in favour of his role as a producer, composer and bandleader.

The Tribe label - run of course by the pair themselves - it came on was also one of the great of its era in the 1970s. Here the album has been remixed from the OG master tapes, all under the watchful eye of its creators, then lacquered by Bernie Grundman. It is an expansive and indulgent record that includes a vast booklet that takes us through the history of the label and touches on the story of Black American empowerment.

Review: Despite being an ambitious and prolific artist back in the sixties and seventies, James Reese never realised an album of his works. The Trombonist, bandleader, songwriter, arranger and producer instead put out a series of 45s that were later discovered by Now Again boss Eothen "Egon" Alapatt. After one or two made it onto Stones Throw and Now Again anthologies he finally puts them all together on one spellbinding record. It covers a wide sphere of sound from hardcore soul to loved up funk via jazz flecked instrumentals. Kenny Dope even makes an appearance to mix "Throwing Stones" which helps makes this utterly essential.

Review: New Orleans legend Alvin Batiste created some seminal spiritual jazz albums with the college band he instructed and led in Baton Rouge. This is the first time they have ever been commercially released having originally been given away as souvenirs at Southern University. The record has plenty of deep and mystic Batiste originals paired with some superb John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard covers. These much sought-after records are gems from the 70s American scene that will now be available to all thanks to this official release, which comes with a booklet full of background.

Review: Egon's Now Again imprint prime us for the forthcoming airing of a previously unreleased album from 70s Iowan funk outfit Split Decision Band. "Watchin' Out" was the band's most successful single and has previously passed hands for over $1000 between collectors. Thundering drums, insistent guitars and cool vocal dynamics that know when to let the music do the talking, both versions will slay any dance just as they did 35-40 years ago. We can't wait to hear the album!

Sin Control (feat Molly Lewis - instrumental) (5:10)
Review: Having previously been famed for re-imagining classic soul and funk cuts - albeit with a pleasingly retro-futurist twist - Trish Toledo returns to Now-Again Records with something fresh: a co-composition of her own. In its' original full vocal form, 'Sin Control' is a jangling, atmospheric Spanish-language soul number that combines a loose, languid groove with strummed acoustic guitars, retro-sounding electric guitar licks and Tijuana brass style horns. Over on the flip, guest Molly Lewis comes to the fore on an instrumental take laden with mazy Moog style synth solos and melodic whistling - think Stereolab doing semi-acoustic soul, and you're close.

Review: Now-Again Records presents Carolina Funk: First In Funk 1968-1977. The fourth CD in the UK-based Jazzman Records series that produced the landmark Midwest, Texas, and most recently, Florida Funk compilations. For this instalment we’ve moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina. Curated largely by resident North Carolina researcher and collector Jason Perlmutter, Carolina Funk presents 22 of the best, rarest and most sought-after heavy funk songs ever recorded, with break-beats to spare. Without any large urban centres much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line. From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscovered tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself, this is Carolina Funk.

Review: Following the liberation of Zambia from British colonial rule in 1964, a musical revolution took place in the Southern African nation. By the start of the 1970s, the country had its own unique fusion style known as Zamrock. A thrilling fusion of psychedelic rock, James Brown style hard funk and indigenous musical elements (most notably vocals and rhythms), the style was hugely popular in the nation throughout the decade. This superb double-vinyl compilation provides a brilliant overview for newcomers, gathering together scene staples and lesser-known gems from the likes of Witch, Ngozi Family, Ricky Banda, Machine Gunners, Salty Dog and Born Free. For the curious, the story of those who shaped the style is told in greater detail in the accompanying booklet.

Review: This new comp is a year-end exclusive, and chronicles only the best psych-funk and soul from the genre's heyday, the early 70s. The follow-up to Now-Again's most well-loved compilation 'Forge Your Own Chains', this compilation, like that one, has a conceptual backbone, loosely ruminating on what might befall the human race after COVID. With only 3000 copies pressed worldwide, the bands featured on this comp range from teenage Icelandic garage wannabes to Krautrock legends.

Review: US label Now Again follows up the success of its recent Forge Your Own Chains compilation with another, and this time one that has never before be available on vinyl like this. It features a fine selection of small run private presses that are all incredibly hard to find or long out of print. The bands behind the music range from legends of the krautrock scene to Turkish teenagers to Icelandic prog-rock outfits, prison funk ensembles and even the uncle of E-40. It's real, raw and full of plenty of visceral funk thrills made between 1970 and 1975 but suitable for all occasions.

Review: Cold Heat: Heavy Funk Rarities 1968-1974 Vol 1 is a vibrant compilation album that encapsulates the essence of early funk music during the late 1960s to the early 1970s. Featuring obscure tracks from that era, it showcases the raw energy, infectious rhythms, and soulful grooves that defined the funk movement. From big, fat basslines to horn sections that pack a punch, each track immerses you in impossibly catchy rhythms so you journey through the golden age of this genre. With its diverse selection of rare gems, Cold Heat offers a glimpse into a musical era characterized by innovation.

Review: Spiritual jazz ten-piece World's Experience Orchestra were founded in 1975 by musician-producer John Jamyll Jones, recording their debut album, The Beginning Of A New Birth, in a church basement the same year. Made up of two long, experimental, Sun Ra style workouts, the album is now considered a hard-to-find classic of the genre. This double-vinyl reissue not only boasts the original album in all its' far-out glory, but also the outfit's even more obscure 1980 follow-up, As Time Flows On. This was recorded live at a gig in 1977, and offers a smoother, more soulful take on their inspired, spiritual sound (see the wonderful "Rain/Nine Degrees Of Cold" and Terry Callier-ish "Woman" for proof).

Review: Denny Zeitlin is a US jazz maestro perhaps best known for his work on the Invasion Of The Body Snatchers soundtrack. On this release for Now Again, we get treated to an unreleased 1969 LP he recorded with Mel Graves and George Marsh, previously only available as an acetate or limited private pressing. It's a powerful and expansive work with Zeitlin's limber piano playing up front, but reaching across styles in a fusion which gets seriously funky in some places, positively cosmic in others. The title track alone is a 12-minute opus which will take you far and wide, like all the best jazz should.
