Review: Celebrating 50 years of one of the most definitive fusion records ever made, Now Again present the most fitting remaster Axelrod's critically acclaimed debut album Song Of Innocence has ever had. An immense piece of work that pays homage to William Blake and brought together nodes and notions of rock, classical, funk, psychedelic and boogaloo, this reissue comes straight from the original masters with engineering and consultation from Axelrod's production partner H B Barnum, original keyboardist Don Randi, his widow Terri and producer T-Ray. Still as complex and cosmic and sounding better than ever.

Review: David Axelrod's 1969 album Songs of Experience - the now legendary follow-up to 1668's similarly acclaimed Songs of Innocence - has long been regarded as something of a classic, not to mention a constant source of samples for hip-hop producers such as DJ Shadow, Pete Rock, Madlib and KRS-One. As this reissue proves, it remains a peerless release. While it was inspired by the poems of William Blake, the album's tracks brilliantly fuse elements of jazz, European classical music, jazz-funk, rock, pop and traditional British and Irish folk music. It's a stunning set of instrumental tracks, all told - a kind of imaginary soundtrack to the best film never made.

Review: Co-produced by none other than James Brown and featuring a band led by fellow funk/soul legend Dave Matthews, The Grodeck Whipperjenny's sole album has long been considered something of a must-have by heavy funk fans. Original copies have tended to be hard to come by, so this Record Store Day reissue from Now Again Records, which comes complete with a booklet telling the story of the 1970 set, should be an essential purchase. It's a curiously psychedelic affair, with string-laden, near symphonic moments (see the almost entirely beat-free "Conclusions" being joined by cuts that explore spiraling funk-rock ("Sitting Here On A Tongue") and acid-fired psychedelic rock ("Why Can't I Go Back").

Review: Two albums deep, Karl Hector's troupe continue to join the dots between territories, decades and genres with hypnotic aplomb. A frenzy of Middle Eastern arrangements, densely weaved psychedelic motifs and super-tight instrumentation, each track spins a gorgeous hazy yarn. From the sunset serenade "Spirit Of Gine" to the fuzzier, off-kilter freneticism of "Transition T" via the overlapping melodies and yearning flutes of "Samai Thaqil" and the proggier, guitar-led "Nibunga", Unstraight Ahead carves a very clear path deep into the most unique, timeless pastures.

Review: Welcome to the deepest of space... There's no return from this one! The Heliocentrics and original 'badasssss' Melvin Van Peebles first mooted this collaboration six years ago. Finally, their stars have aligned and the end result is a concept of cosmic beauty. Deep immersive jazz, it's the perfect bedrock for Melvin's smoky narrative. Exploring space and the idea of being happy to be lost in it, the narrative is weaved perfectly over twelve captivating chapters. Ready for take off?

Review: A very special document right here! A document many didn't believe existed until Now Again announced it. These Are The JB's charts the moment where Brown met Bootsy and invited him in the studio for a session. Recorded but shelved, the LP carries all the hallmarks and roots DNA of funk as we know it. Tight, teasing and full of surprises, anyone who enjoys modern music should know about this record. But they probably won't... Only 3000 copies are being pressed!

Review: The Lightmen Plus One's sought-after 1972 set "Energy Control Center" has long been out of reach of all but the most wealthy and dedicated jazz collectors, with original copies regularly changing hands for upwards of 600 quid. Fortunately for those of us without such big budgets, Stones Throw offshoot Now-Again Records has decided to reissue it, expanding the original album to two discs with the addition of unheard alternate takes and previously unreleased tracks. It remains one of the most inspired works of legendary drummer and bandleader Bubbha Thomas - a spiritual jazz masterpiece inspired by some of the most revolutionary jazz of the period. The set also comes with a brilliant booklet that features a detailed history of Thomas' incredible life and career, written by noted jazz and hip-hop journalist Lance Scott Walker.

Review: When it comes to creating fresh instrumental hip-hop jams out of record label catalogues, Oh No has an impressive track record. The long-serving producer - famously Madlib's younger brother - has previously performed the service for Stones Throw, Miserable Beast Music and Now Again, a label he first worked with a decade ago. Here he returns with a third set of tracks created from gems in the Now Again vaults. It's a sparkling set, all told, comprising head-nodding beats and musical treats deftly sculpted from obscure, inspired and overlooked jazz, soul, funk and boogie rubs. Those with a good knowledge of the Now Then back catalogue will have fun spotting the samples; everyone else can just sit back and enjoy the producer's brilliant work.

Review: Many funk and soul collectors have long hankered after Split Decision Band's soul 7" single, 1978's scorching - and notoriously hard-to-find - double A-side, "Watching Out"/"Dazed". It was always assumed that the Gordon Starr-helmed band made no other recordings. Happily, enquiries from Now-Again Records owner Egon resulted in Starr handing over the master tapes to this previously unreleased album. It's a superb set, all told, with highlights including the soaring disco-funk brilliance of "Night Dancer", the sugar-sweet soul of "Crystal Powder", the synth-laden passion of "You're The One" and the low-slung, jazz-funk inspired grooves of "Split Decision Band Wants You To Groove". Throw in both "Watching Out" and "Dazed", and you have one of the strongest funk, soul and disco albums you're likely to hear all year.

Review: Following the liberation of Zambia from British colonial rule in 1964, a musical revolution took place in the Southern African nation. By the start of the 1970s, the country had its own unique fusion style known as Zamrock. A thrilling fusion of psychedelic rock, James Brown style hard funk and indigenous musical elements (most notably vocals and rhythms), the style was hugely popular in the nation throughout the decade. This superb double-vinyl compilation provides a brilliant overview for newcomers, gathering together scene staples and lesser-known gems from the likes of Witch, Ngozi Family, Ricky Banda, Machine Gunners, Salty Dog and Born Free. For the curious, the story of those who shaped the style is told in greater detail in the accompanying booklet.
