2 Black, 2 Strong (feat Hakim Green) (3:51)
Review: The Burrell Brothers (Rhano & Rheji) were by far the most prolific artists to release on seminal New York City imprint Nu Groove. Since Defected acquired the label's back catalogue, a new era brings new material by the pair for the first time in almost three decades - the latest arriving in the form of 'A.B.T. 2 (A Burrell Thang). It's that unmistakable sound of Stateside house music from the early '90s all over again as heard on 'Cut A Rug', wth a sound that many young producers of today try so hard to replicate. On the flip, we've got the druggy basement jam 'Back To Tha Underground' which is perfect afterhours tackle, as well as '2 Black, 2 Strong' (feat Hakim Green) and the famous "it's time for the percolator" vocal sample.

Distant Power Plant (6:17)
A Thousand Kisses (5:40)
Organ Grinder (6:17)
Review: The famous Nu Groove is about as influential as they come when you're talking about early house music. It had its own distinctive New Yorkian twist with much material on it produced by the legendary Burrell Brothers. Here we are reminded why it is such a vital label with an EP from Acid Jerks that embodies everything that made it so: warm kick drums, musical melodies and a sense of soul that is impossible to ignore. After a smooth opener, 'Distant Power Plant' has a more raw and menacing bassline tearing up the raw drums and 'A Thousand Kisses' then leans into a serene techno vibe but still with house music as the foundation. The warm late-night chords of closer 'Organ Grinder' make it the standout.

Song Of The Siren (Nautical mix)
Review: It's quite staggering to think that Ronald Burrell's next-level house steamer "Song Of The Siren" hails from way back when in 1990, dealing as it does in illustrious sweeps of blessed out melody and loaded as it is with highly charged sensuality. Whichever mix you plump for, from the full-blooded "Atlantic Mix" to the stripped down "Black Sea Mix", or even the sea sound effects laden drum workout of the "Nautical Mix", this is as advanced and emotionally striking as house music can get, leagues ahead of the competition. It's a wonder anyone bothered to make a house record after this came out, and this repress will likely send all modern deep house chancers scurrying into the shadows once more.

Rheji Burrell - "Gimme Ya Luv" (6:07)
Review: Classic deep house movements from Stefan Braatz, Virgo Four and Rheji Burrell, coming through with the maximized, wally acid heat. 'Everyman Jack' on the A-side orders punters to shake, albeit whoever recorded the vocal sample is clearly so confident of their floor-command that they barely needed to do more than whisper. Burrell helms up two new ones on the B, meanwhile, with 'XTC' remaining soulful, autotuned and piano-phasey, and 'Gimme Ya Luv' leaning towards low-end-theoretic hip-house.

House Music Transcends (6:27)
Review: Steve Bug is going on 30+ years of writing electronic music and travelling the world as a top DJ with no signs of letting up. It Just Happened is his latest and finds its way to the legendary and iconic Nu Groove records. It must be daunting to release music on such an amazing label. 'It Just Happened' has all the makings of a classic worthy enough for the Nu Groove logo. Veteran Cle who has worked on many projects with Steve is featured here as well. For those that really know Steve Bug's background, they know he is equally involved in house music as he is with techno. Tracks like 'Crew Thing' show his ability to make a standout house track while 'House Music Transcends' closes things out with your hands in the air. We respect Steve Bug so much for his work over the years. When he is old skool mode like he is on this EP, you just have to say respect to the man. Respect!

Review: Bushwacka! is one of the UK's most accomplished underground players. From DJing to production via label ownership and promotion he has done it all, and with a lasting impact. His early days saw him as a key part of the fresh and emergent tech house sound and he has been vital ever since. Here he digs into his roots with a new EP for the iconic New York label Nu Groove and serves up just the sort of sounds the label is known for - deep house with chunky drum programming, smart synth work and warm basement vibes. A superb EP from a real veteran.

Trilogy Inc - "Awakening"
Trilogy Inc - "Hi Cycle"
Review: Nu Groove will always be synonymies with a distinctive take on deep house - the label rose to prominance in the late 80s and early 90s in its native New Jersey and put out definitive releases from The Burell Brothers, mostly, but also a selection of other dons of the day. Some of them now come together for the first time on vinyl as Chicago legend Ron Carroll offers up a pair of tunes from his House Of Love EP. On the reverse, Trilogy Inc. come back strong with a couple of newbies in the bouncy house of 'Awakening', and 'Hi Cycle', which comes on more energetically with strong percussive patterns and classic drums. Serious heat, this.

Review: House music doesn't get much more storied and authentic than that served up by the iconic New Jersey label Nu Groove. It very much shaped the clary sound of the 90s and still has fans excited today whenever reissues drop. This is not that, however, and is in fact a new set of recent cuts from veteran Swiss producer Deetron and underground mainstay Bruise. The sounds are inspired by the soulful techno and house that emerged in the Mid West and build on solid drums with silky loops that look to the future. 'AM_909' in particular is a lush and warm cut of epic proportions.

Close To U (6:03)
Exotica (6:47)
Review: Nu Groove is one of those labels that everyone who knows recognises as having played a key part in the early house movement. Based out of the New York scene on the East Coast it had a distinctive 90s deep house sound which DJ Steaw now taps into but with his own twist. His grooves are jacked up and analogue, densely packed but high on warmth and soul. 'Take It There' is a prickly opener and 'Seascape' then brings some acid. 'Close To U' has a more low-slung groove that is peppered with raw claps and last of all, 'Exotica' brings some cosmic synth work to crisp, funked-up and electro-tinged rhythms.

Review: After four decades in the game, Chicago original Mike Dunn knows a thing or two about serving up killer, party-staring house cuts. He's at it again on his latest outing for the reborn Nu Groove label, offering up a quartet of ear-catching, peak-time ready treats. On 'Git'cha House On' Dunn goes straight for the jugular, joining the dots between UK interpretations of hip-house and Kraftwerk-influenced Windy City house, before opting to add another of his part sung, part rapped vocals to a rolling, piano-sporting good time groove on 'Don't Pay Me No Mind'. Over on side B, 'Rock Ya Body (Deepa)' is a glossy, classic-sounding and percussively energetic big room workout, while 'Le'tcha Love Fall Down On Me' is deep, dreamy, energetic and lusciously loved up.

Review: The second volume of edits of classic outings on Nu Groove records, assembling modern house heroes such as Dam Swindle, Phil Weeks, and Honey Dijon to re-fix tunes by the legendary Equation and The Burrell Brothers among others. Highlights include Dam Swindle's misty eyed extension of Equation's 'I'll Say A Prayer 4 U'- a perfect rainy day house anthem, and the paranoid phonk of Rhano Burrell's 'When Can I Call You' as remapped by Honey Dijon & Luke Solomon. Surefire party starters all round.

Review: Nu Groove's legacy has long been assured as one of the early and pioneering house labels out of New York. After the first wave it cemented itself in the deeper end of the spectrum with artists like The Burrell Brothers being key to that success. Here they appear under the other alias, New York House'n Authority, on a superb EP of classic cuts that also features Jazz Documents, Tech Tax Inc and House Neegroz, all of whom have been edited somewhat here by new school names. What results is four tracks of deep, jazzy house with classic grooves, superb drum programming and meaningful keys and chords.

Let The World Dance (5:59)
Review: Although born and raised in Brooklyn, Jovonn never released on Nu Groove in the early '90s, choosing instead to set up his own imprint, Goldtone Records. Given the richness and quality of his deep house sound, it's nice to see him finally debut on the revitalised NYC label. He hits the ground running with the rubbery, warehouse-ready rush of 'Raise Up (Raise Up High)', where dreamy chords and tight organ stabs emerge from behind a killer bassline and hypnotic house beats, before opting for a warmer and more relaxed, classic-sounding NYC deep house vibe on 'Sunday Ride'. Over on the flip-side, 'What' is a toasty, sun-splashed slab of summery deep house brilliance, while 'Let The World Dance' sees him cannily combine angular, early LFO-style synth bass, immersive chords, bleeping melodies and crunchy drum machine beats.

Drop That Traxx (5:12)
Review: Nu Groove is of course one of the foundational labels when it comes to house music. From the late 80s and through the 90s, the New York imprint put out some of the genre's most definitive deeper sounds. Carrying the torch for that sort of quality today is Jovonn who never fails to cook up classy grooves. Here we're treated to 'The Piano Fix' which plays with a lead piano line throughout and layers up subtle acid over the simple but effective drums. A Return version is more funky and then 'Let Me Tell You Somethin' is more playful house on the flip. 'Drop That Traxx' shuts down with laidback house perfection.

Few labels have been as definitive for house music as Nu Groove, and now they tap up a pair of artists who have also done their far share to shape the genre at large. On one side is American mainstay Jovonn, who offers a spritely tune in 'Random' with skipping drums and edgy chords, while 'Get Over It' (Soulfrican Soul Bass dub mix) is a more warm and heady tune for cosy back rooms. On the flip, Swiss craftsman Deetron offers some peak time tackle with the big piano chords and incendiary hi hats of 'Dr Melonball' while 'V-NRG' brings some jacking old school disco sweat to close out a useful EP.

Turnstyle Turbulance
Review: Following the success of Rush Hour's 2012 Burrell Brothers retrospective, The Nu Groove Years 1988-92, it was almost inevitable that some of that material would be repressed. $1.15 please was Rheji Burrell's second 12" for Nu Groove under the Metro alias, and has long been regarded as something of a deep house classic. It features four pleasingly varied cuts, from the deep house-meets-acid pulse of the brilliant "Rush Hour" to the celebratory release of the '89 style Chicago piano house of "Turntable Turbulence". It's arguably the deeper tracks that make the greatest impact, though, with "Brownstone Express" - a superb fusion of bustling drum machine rhythms and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords - being amongst Rheji's finest solo productions.

This fresh 12" serves up a third volume of label edits from various artists from across the spectrum. Metro's 'Turnstyle Turbulance' is tackled first by NiCe7 who brings bumpy drums, then Mark Broom's Vox Flanger Mixx of an N.Y. House'n Authority classic is a steamy jacker with lovely old-school vibes. Our favourite though is Asylum's 'Guitarz' (Honey Dijon & Luke Solomon edit) which is a nice mid-tempo workout with seductive claps and excellent hi hats.

Review: Parisian producer Franck Roger lands on Nu Groove with 'Cosmic Tree' EP, a four-track outing of deep house perfectly at home on the legendary NYC label. Still going strong almost 35 years after its inception, it's nice to see the label is still welcoming fresh talent: Roger delivers a sultry, sauna-dunked steam on 'Part Of My Soul', one of the most contented-sounding house tracks we've heard in a while, thanks in part to the vocal stylings of Rimarkable; then there's the more repetitious ardour of 'Radik'Hall', 'Cosmic Funk' and 'The Music', all of which revel in the purely seductive potentialities of deep house production. Review: The reborn Nu Groove label continues to serve up some rather good new music. The New York imprint's latest 12" is a split affair. Veteran New Jersey producer Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero handles side A, first adding warming, traditional Nu Groove sounds and jazzy disco bass with heavy, tribal-influenced house beats on 'I Love', before successfully updating NJ garage on the organ-heavy 'The City'. On the flip there's a debut from Trilogy Inc, an anonymous project reportedly helmed by "one of the UK's most esteemed house duos of the 80s and 90s". They begin with the stabbing analogue bass, bouncy beats and swirling vocal snippets of '313', before opting for a denser, heavier and more up-front sound on acid-flecked jack-track 'Calling'.

Review: The genius of Nu Groove's ongoing 'Edits' series lies in the quality of its subtle 21st century tweaks of classic cuts from house music's golden age. You'll find plenty of fine examples of this on the latest instalment, volume four. Check first Nice7's bumpin', bass-heavy and organ-rich take on The Sound Vandal's 1991 gem 'Tonight's The Night', which the producer has successfully stripped-back and subtly beefed up, before admiring Hugo Massien's bleeping, tech-tinged remake of the Burrell Brothers' N.Y Housin' Authority classic 'Apt 2A'. You'll find tweaks of two more Burrell projects on the flip: a pleasingly driving Mak & Pasteman edit of the techno, acid and bleep inspired Utopia Project cut 'File #3', and a blissed-out, chugging and saucer-eyed Honey Dijon and Luke Solomon rub of A.B.T's Donna Summer sampling 'Luv 2 Luv U'.

Review: There has been some excellent material released by Nu Groove since the long-dormant NYC label was reborn a couple of years ago, though this EP from Ibiza-based Italian Guiseppe Tuccillo may well be the best yet. He hits the ground running with superb opener 'I Believe', a warehouse-ready house workout rich in New Jersey style organ stabs, eyes-closed vocal snippets, squelchy bass and loose-limbed, breakbeat house drums, before opting for a warmer, deeper and more spacey-sounding flex on the equally rubbery 'Sunshine City'. 'It's Not Over' sees him join the dots between rolling, mid-90s NYC house and classic Italo-house, while 'Let's Do It' is a slightly slower slab of swirling house retro-futurism. Four quality club cuts for those who like their house to be as addictive as it is classy.

La La Land (4:15)
Review: Legendary New York label Nu Groove very much helped to define the house sound of the 90s. While The Burrell Brothers aka Rhano and Rheji were the label's most famous artists, its pioneering catalogue also included the likes of Kenny Dope, Joey Negro and Frankie Bones & Lennie Dee. This 12" from the revived label is by The Utopia Project, a solo alias of Rheji and one rooted in classic house but with a modern edge. 'A Better Day' is tender piano house from the 1980s, then 'You Don't Know What To Do' has an r&b bump to the vocals and beats. Acid defines the mid tempo house of 'With You' while things get deep and bubbly on the muddy closer 'La La Land.'

There is everything from deep and dark house to more uplifting and vocal styles, and this collection of high points is an essential one with key acts like Bas Noir, NY House'n Authority and Metro all making the cut. The results are impassioned, soul enriched house music that set out an early template that has rarely been bettered. Essential for any real house head.
