Why Do I Love You (Red Greg radio edit)
Why Do I Love You (instrumental radio edit)
Review: Here comes Red Greg with a joyous edit from his coffers, presented on the run of Magic Touch reissues currently surfacing on Numero. Magic Touch was a cult label in Chicago which carried some incredible, rare tracks from the city and nearby up until 1984. The finest of these have been out of reach of the average Joe for a long time, and finally now cuts like Andy Brown's swooning, string-laden disco stomper 'Why Do I Love You' are getting back out there. For this particular release Greg was called on to offer his edit services and of course he does right by the original, bringing the best out of the track to ensure it lands the best it can when you take it for a spin.

Review: Why Do I Love You? Good question! Chicago's Magic Touch label gets the Numero treatment, hearing rare groove selector & DJ, Red Greg, edit the disco holy grail 'Why Do I Love You' by Magic Touch. Now available on 7" for the first time, we hear both Red Greg's full version and its instrumental edit, providing ample choice for selectors hoping to build versatile sets out of the Numero catalogue.

So Funny (2:26)
Review: Dimas Garza made his breakaway from The Royal Jesters in the mid '60s. His solo career was something of a reinvention under the new alias Dimas III and saw him record three singles for Clown, a label run, ironically, by The Jesters. They have all since become very hard to find and expensive records that are much sought after so it's great they now make it back to press courtesy of Numero Group. 'So Funny' and 'I Won't Love You Again' are both posse dup dee on this fine 45rpm and make for some steamy Southern soul. Somehow, Garza never broke out of his own locale but he did leave a great musical legacy.

Review: Numero Group has another of their superb soul gems here from former Mind & Matter bandmates James "Jimmy Jam" Harris and Michael Dixon. The duo teamed up in 1978 for this gospel-boogie banger which first came on the private Mad label, so is now mad hard to find. 'You're Everything' is a classy dancer with a big heart and those Good worshipping vocals taking things to new heights. The flip is no slouch either and keeps the grooves coming with 'You're All I Need' another timeless classic that will improve any set and record collection no end.

Review: Slowcore originators Duster hear several of their most noted singles and short-play projects collected into a single boxset, here courtesy of Numero Group. Including the EP 'Apex, Trance-Like', which more or less describes the ensuing sonic character of the entire project here, the featuring tracks 'Light Years' and 'Four Hours', like their titles, seem to compact long stretches of space and time into more palatable experiences. Outtakes also feature, as well as an exclusive Duster-branded handkerchief.

Review: Out of the hidden corners of US indie-rock there are certain bands who manage to mess with the script so much they nigh on implode. San Jose's Duster were one such example who seemed to strike gold by accident, following up their 1996 DIY tape with this, their debut album proper. In its dishevelled, introspective rejection of commercial interests over sincere expression, it remains a high watermark for any of the many movements they're associated with from slowcore to space rock and the whole slacker movement. Forget the tags and just savour the sound, which yields beautiful songwriting as much as angular instrumentation as filtered through their unique lens. Stratosphere is a stone cold classic, and it sounds just as vital 25 years on from its original release.

Review: American rock band Duster aka multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber, and Jason Albertini return with a fourth full length album that across 13 intimate tunes explores interplanetary goth sounds. It is a heartbroken record weighed down by heavy emotions as the aching synths, nagging drums and unresolved guitars linger in the air. Though sad and melancholic on the surface, the delicate nature and softness of these tunes is also striking beautiful in many cases. These are loner lullabies that encourage you to wallow in downbeat moods and come out the other side feeling refreshed and resolute.

Review: Clay Parton and Canaan Amber are behind the ongoing Duster project and for this new album, they have been digging in their personal archives. Remote Echoes is a collection of half a decade's worth of home four-tracking - the sounds are lo-fi, grimy, crumbing and underground expressions of their take on alternative indie sounds. Some of these tracks are taken from cassette-only demos released as Christmas Dust and On The Dodge but there are also plenty of unheard pieces that showcase their unique blend of cape old synths, fuzzy guitars, muffled percussion and quiet vocals that all predate mumblecore, chill wave and other associated sounds.

Review: Birds In The Ground is the 2004 album by the American indie rocker Eiafuawn, aka. Duster member Clay Parton. Fans of the eminent slowcore band will be pleasantly surprised by this comparatively obscure curio, which peppers its folky-bluesy, nigh poppy singer-songwriting basis with bursts of noise and sprawling sonic collage. The reissue also includes bonus tracks and unreleased demos, but the main wonder is its audiophilic, emo drawl - a complex project for sure, and one we're sad didn't hear more exploration.

Review: The Universal Togetherness Band were an anomaly during their short, bright burst of energy recording in the late 70s and early 80s. Columbia College's audio engineering program became their gateway to recording their huge swathes of visionary soul, which ranks up there with the all-time greats like Stevie Wonder. Numero already reissued some of the group's standout tracks, but now comes a wave of unreleased demos from the group's Andre Gibson, recorded between 1980 and 1984. These are simply stunning songs, from the mellow Rhodes ballad 'Breakaway' to the snappy 'Stuck On A Thrill', mixed in with little segues and odd offcuts that sound all the more charming with the naturally lo-fi nature of the recordings.

Review: Here's a cut which might well break out some misty-eyed reminiscence for those who were locked into the UK's rare groove and jazzdance scenes in the late 80s. Cheryl Glasgow's career was brief, but she gifted us two wonderful singles, and it's the second of those Numero have opted to reissue right here. 'Glued To The Spot' has that humid, rhythmic quality which would have gone down a storm with the Balearic set, not least with the attendant club and instrumental mixes on the original 12", but for our money it's Glasgow's understated voice, which lands somewhere between Shara Nelson and Sade, which gives the track its magic.

Review: This recorded autobiography of Catherine Howe, age 20, briefly appeared in 1971. Too young for memoirs, most artists have barely established any sort of musical competence by the age of legal adulthood, let alone compositions matching the maturity and complexity of Howe's. What A Beautiful Place, however, is a prodigious effort wrought from the melancholy ruminations of post-adolescence. The album's twelve songs unfold like a classic bildungsroman, beginning in the smoke-stained industrial county of Yorkshire, transformed by the electrified creative landscape of mid-century London, and retiring to the warm pastoral bliss of the county of Dorset on England's southern coast. Produced by noted jazz pianist Bobby Scott, the LP - oft-mistaken for a concept album - was available for only a month in the summer of 1971, disappearing after Reflection Records' shuttering in 1971.

Singer Isabelle Antena quickly moved onto new projects, forgoing her cold wave aesthetic for an excitingly new sophisticated pop sound. On 1986's En Cavale, there's the undeniable influence of Madonna and city pop sounds with the inevitable bleeding through of late-'80s Euro dance and even a bit of bossa nova would you believe - and it works well!. The elegant second chapter of a French pop treasure. In the '90s, Antena led another group, the Powaga Sisters, and was with them for three albums between 1993-2004.

Review: 'Electro-samba' didn't used to be a genre name one came across every day, but that all changed with French pop icon Isabelle Antena, whose daring solo ventures in the 1980s saw to many a creative explosion. First coming to prominence as part of the self-styled French-Belgian trio Antena, who were more coldwave than city pop, Isabella's solo defection proved a thorough change in tack, as her debut En Cavale dealt in all the sexiest styles from bossa nova, to electro, to synth-pop, to cafe-ready easy listening. From 'Magic Words' to 'Sea Side Week End', this is dreamy, electrified musical sophistry for the Sylvester era.

Review: Willie Junei Lee was a guitarist active mainly throughout the 1970s. He toured with Curtis Mayfield and Albert King, so we're sure you'll agree that this constitutes enough social proof for his inclusion in Blue Note's latest reissue campaign. 'Let's Ride' is Lee's first ever single: channeling the spiritual rock influences of the likes of Santana and Jimi Hendrix, this is a guitar masterpiece for the ages.

Review: This is one of those disco holy grails that doesn't even need to convince you of its worth, and its no surprise original copies have been so coveted for so long. Chicago's Magic Touch label was a low key affair, but jams like this ensure its impact remains strong to this day as LaJohn and Sheela lay down the feeling in no uncertain terms. 'Too Far Gone' is a smouldering, bittersweet track which deserves to reach as many soulful heads as possible, so this tasty remaster courtesy of Numero couldn't come soon enough.

Review: LaJohn and Sheila's 'Too Far Gone' is an otherworldly disco cut from the Chicago label Magic Touch, which is benefitting from a reissue spotlight courtesy of Numero. The track was unearthed by Mr Peabody for a BBE compilation a long way back, but finally the tune is getting its own proper outing thanks to this tidy little 7", which comes in clear blue on this edition. Some tracks are holy grails for more than their scarcity, and this is truly one of those perfect records that everyone will want in their lives for all time once they clap ears on it.
