Metaclaw (12")
Cat: OFFEN 006. Rel: 08 Jun 17
  1. Metaclaw (16:08)
  2. Metaclaw (Gordon Pohl remix) (9:06)
  3. Metaclaw (Gilbert Cohen remix) (6:19)
Review: A bonafide Salon Des Amateurs dubplate has finally landed! A wonderful 15+ minute opus created some years ago during Tako and Jonny's Sombrero Galaxy project, this was the result of a chance trip to Ralf Beck's Dusseldorf HQ and has been a staple for select DJs ever since. Select DJs such as Vladimir Ivkovic who has firmed it up for his own Offen imprint and commissioned two industrial strength remixes in the process... Musiccargo's Gordon Pohl lays down a brutal halftime dirge while Gilb'R flips to his Gilbert Cohen guise for a percussion-heavy mystical freak out. Beautiful.

Review: The Geins't Nait trio continue to wreak havoc on our charts and disorder in our minds, coming through with a new LP for the excellent Offen Music, home to the likes of Rex Ilusivii, Toresch and Ivan Smagghe's collaboration with Rupert Cross. Make Dogs Sing is an album of euphoria and mystique, offering 13 tracks of ethereal beauty, ranging from the very moody to the unscrupulously wide-eyed. There is a gentle movement amid the drones, however, with scrappy analogue beats weaving their way into a cauldron of cavernous dread, such as "Ciseaux Daddy", a fine piece of electronic tweaking that flows beautifully into the likes of "China" and "Discord", all equally mesmerizing pools of beats and sonic performed with nothing but heart and soul. This is a stand-out for us, and it will surely be an album that stands the test of time. TIP!

Review: If you are lucky enough to have visited Dusseldorf club Salon Des Amateurs, you may be familiar with one of its residents, the cultish Serbian DJ Vladimir Ivkovic whose daring sets are inspiration to another of the venue's stars in Lena Willikens. Often Music is Ivkovic's new label and their first release shines a light on the unreleased archives of pioneering Serbian electronic artist Rex Ilusivii, real name Mitar Suboti?. The Serbian artist sadly passed away in a studio fire in 1999 leaving behind a vast number of unreleased works recorded over a decade from 1980 onwards. Six of those rescued tracks feature on this double 12" release In The Moon Cage (side 4 houses an etched illustration) and the more daring selectors out there will find them quite inspirational.

Review: Dusseldorf imprint Offen Music present posthumous works unveiled by Serbian legend Rex Ilusivii aka Mitar Subotic, who passed away tragically in 1999 when his Sao Paulo, Brazil studio caught fire. As the label themselves best put it: "To this day Rex Ilusivii remains an enigma of the global music culture, caught between late cold war electronic spheres, classic and the power of found sound." These seven unearthed excursions run the gamut from dark industrial and creepy imaginary soundtracks to bizarro cosmic synth oddities. Highly recommended listening.

OFFEN 005.5 (hand-numbered hand-stamped 10" in hand-stamped sleeve limited to 300 copies)
Cat: OFFEN 0055. Rel: 24 May 17
  1. Jazz (4:52)
  2. Assassin De La Popcorn (4:20)
Review: Former Blackstrobe man Ivan Smagghe (It's A Fine Line/Disques De La Mort) had teamed up with regular collaborator Rupert Cross on the MA LP for Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen Music earlier in 2017. These two tracks can be seen as an addendum of sorts to their wonderful album of ambient, drone and experimental electronics excursions. It was a departure from the disco-tinged remixes the pair were more known for and an impressive body of work which we'd recommend. On the A side we have the sublime free-synth journey of "Jazz" showing off some wonderful expressions of a lush patch, while on the flip things take a darker and noisier turn on the four minute thriller "Assassin De La Popcorn".

  9. Somebody To Love Tonight (3:03)
Review: With this latest release on his fine Offen Music imprint, Vladimir Ivkovic has pulled off something of a coup. Ma is the first collaborative release from Ivan Smaghhe and Rupert Cross, a composer and sound designer who is best known for his work with fellow score maestro Patrick Doyle. It's an interesting and unusual set, with the duo utilizing a range of acoustic and electronic instruments to create tracks that variously touch on Don't DJ style polyrhythms, ambient mood pieces smothered in evocative field recordings, eccentric drone soundscapes, krautrock influenced compositions, shoegaze moods, and creepy, soundtrack style workouts. It's the kind of album that takes a few listens to really get under your skin, but it's more than worth the effort.

Review: More posthumous work by the legendary Mitar Subotic aka Suba. He was a Serbian-born musician and composer, set to become one of Brazil's most prominent producers until his untimely passing (in 1999, at only 38 years of age) when his studio in Sao Paulo caught fire. Offen Music have already released two albums by Subotic - under his other well known Rex Ilusivii moniker, but Wayang proves most interesting in that the latin polyrhythms that comprised the bulk of this alias are not featured on the album, as it explores lush ambient and electronic soundscapes instead. The album was said to be conducted in 1995, just shortly after Subotic produced an album together with his old Yugoslavian friend Milan Mladenovic under the project name Angel's Breath.

Review: Well it seems that Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen Music will prove to be every bit as far reaching and unpredictable as his legendary sets at Dusseldorf's Salon Des Amateurs. To recap, the debut Offen offering was a rare sojourn through the unreleased archives of Rex Illusivii, aka cult Serbian musician Mitar Suboti?. This second release introduces Toresch, a new project featuring Detlef Weinrich, Viktoria Wehrmeister and Jan Wagner. Weinrich is of course Salon icon Tolouse Low Trax, and if you were a fan of his recent Themes For Great Citites 12" you will want to spend some time acquainting yourself with the six tracks on this Essen Fur Alle mini LP. Musically, this is largely an affair between the vocals of Wehrmeister and Weinrich's snapping, fluctuating production hand. Wagner's involvement is largely an aesthetic one. Regardless this is a fine collection of music that will appeal to fans of the Salon sound and posits Toresch as a modern day CH BB. Quite wonderful.

OFFEN 007 (12")

  1. Guayabame (4:34)
  2. Las Locas (5:26)
  3. El Fuego (5:48)
  4. Tocar (5:19)
Review: Toresch set a few tongues wagging with their 2016 debut album, Essen Fur Alle, so hopes are naturally high for this untitled follow-up. Once again, Detlef Weinrich (ALA Tolouse Low Trax) provides the moody, end-of-days music - think coldwave fused with early industrial and wayward electronica, and you're close - with Viktoria Wehrmeister penning the lyrics and adding half-spoken, half-sung vocals in typically stylish fashion. We're particularly enjoying the almost beat-less, weirdo ambience of "El Fuego" and the attractively angular fuzziness of "Guayabame", a track rich in lolloping tribal percussion and bleak electronics. That said, many may gravitate towards the moody minimal wave hypnotism of "Las Locas" and the rising, end-of-days synth-pop of "Tocar".
