Electro
  1. Tonight (original)
  2. Tonight (dub)
  3. Tonight (Runaway remix)
  4. Tonight (Runaway remix instrumental)
Review: It was perhaps inevitable that freestyle, perhaps one of the most overlooked of 1980s electronic music styles, would one day begin to get revisited. This new release from Runaway's On The Prowl imprint is about as freestyle as you can get. While actually a brand new track by little-known Brooklyn producer Josh Anzano, it sounds authentically vintage. All the hallmarks of true freestyle are here: stuttering, syncopated rhythms, a ludicrously heavy 808 bassline, ear-piercing electro melodies and a female vocal extolling the virtues of getting out and partying. It's brilliantly produced and ticks all the right boxes - unless you knew, you'd think it was a re-release. Remix wise, label bosses Runaway provide two servicable house versions (vocal and instrumental) that cleverly weave the original 80s-sounding synth melodies and vocal between retro-futurist 4/4 beats and menacing Twilo riffs. Seriously hot.

  6. Drill Loop (Locked Groove)
Review: If you're looking for a truly out there techno record, one that makes DJ Rush seem sane, then Hard Hat Traxx is for you. "Hard Hat Area" kicks starts the release with tinny drums, squeaky acid and heavy kicks, but it can't compare to "Pump". Set to a fast tempo, it features frenetic claps, a grungy wall of acid and what could be the sound of a jet breaking the sound barrier in the background. Then there's the aptly named "Meltdown", which sounds like Alex Cortex and Cristian Vogel on steroids, as a hyperactive minimal groove features wave upon wave of deranged analogue tones and frequencies.

Robo's Road
Cat: OTP 011. Rel: 26 Sep 11
Deep House
  1. Robo's Road
  2. It Gets To Me
  3. Moon Robot
  4. Zuk Zuk
Review: The enigmatic Robotalco steps up for production duties on the next release from On The Prowl, serving up four slices of raw house business for the weekend. "Robo's Road" sets the tone in subaqueous fashion, strings dripping with emotion over the energising bump of simple, rattling and hissing percussion and satisfying drums, whilst the gently swaying piano and deep lying vocal coos bring the vibes. Alongside it, Robotalco presents a more stripped back side to his armoury with "It Get's To Me", which begins in unassuming fashion before exploding into life once those drum rolls are released. Flipside and "Moon Robot" showcases Robotalco's deftness at crafting rolling synth patterns, which work so well with those finely snipped vocal hooks in the latter part of the track. Rounding things off, "Zuk Zuk" expertly deviates from an off kilter ankle deep groove into a crazed gloopy Latin house jam.

You Don't Know Me

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Room 303 - "You Don't Know Me"
  2. Sean Roman & Dick Diamonds - "Dawn Crondlemyers"
  3. Room 303 - "You Don't Know Me" (Tuff City Kids main mix)
  4. Room 303 - "You Don't Know Me" (Tuff City Kids bonus mix)
Review: Toronto-based Room 303 reckons we don't know him... Well after soaking up this EP you'll be much better acquainted. A slouching, smouldering pop gem, "You Don't Know Me" purrs with Metro Area-like panache while the falsetto vocals add a strong sense of direction and focus. Remix-wise Tuff City Kids add some gorgeous pianos, acid and star-gazing arpeggios into the mix for added euphoric effect. Meanwhile on the B we see Sean Roman and Dick Diamonds dust off their house gloves for "Dawn Crondlemyers". Subtly upbeat and positive, it comes across like a 2020 Vision release; all bleepy, squelchy and funky.

  1. Chapter IV (Tensnake)
  2. Chapter II (Two Dogs In A House)
  3. Chapter II (DJ Kaos - Alex & TK Split Secs dub)
  4. Chapter II (DJ Kaos - bonus Drum skit by Kaos/Terri edit)
Review: Having treated the discerning vinyl buying public to a quartet of stories from NYC duo Runaway, On The Prowl seek out a selection of fine production talent to rework them on this swiftly released twelve inch. Whilst Tensnake might be about to take an unforeseen swerve towards the forgotten West London bruk sound on a forthcoming remix for Mark E, his reinterpretation of "Chapter IV" remains resolutely within the slow burning house template indebted to the 80s era upon which he made his name. It's brash in its intent and contains several Technicolor swerves which will make the floor sweat. Demonstrating their keen eye for new talent, Runaway handpick LIES duo Two Dogs In A House to give "Chapter II" a grittier, lo fi warehouse feel that buries the horn stabs in a dark analogue funk. Just wait for the build up and melt down! On the flip DJ Kaos tackles the same track twice, bringing the big room jack vibes in full effect amidst a familiar pulsing bassline.

The Fire Below (remixes)
Cat: OTP 05. Rel: 16 Jul 10
Deep House
  1. The Fire Below (The Revenge remix)
  2. The Fire Below (Azari & III remix)
Review: If this doesn't sell out swiftly there'll be some hat eating partaken at Juno HQ! On The Prowl revisit one of their tracks from last year, enlisting two rising stars of the disco house hybrid scene to give Runaway's burning "The Fire Below" a lick of 2010 infused paint. Glaswegian chug demon The Revenge delves into housier terrain on his effort - cutting up what sounds like a George Benson vocal and laying the results atop a bumping groove which retains the Lil Louis-esque synth melody of the original but adds some warmth to it. On the flip Canadian disco pin ups Azari & III add some peak time flex to the track, throwing down a deluge of old school percussive tricks and introducing some ambidextrous synth stabbery.

Dead Dog Dub
Cat: OPT 08. Rel: 20 May 11
Deep House
  1. Dead Dog Dub (Sal P Spoon Full Of Dub with Sean Bee)
  2. Dead Dog Dub (Coyote Dog dub)
  3. Dead Dog Dance (Andy Ash remix)
  4. Dead Dog Dance (Simoncino remix)
Review: On The Prowl return with a twelve inched stacked to the brim with classiness - as Jacques and Marcus enlist a who's who of the current discognoscenti to embellish their I'm A Cliche drop "Dead Dog Farm" with some new sounds. First up is everyone's favourite post punk icon who will teach you how to cook (seriously check his website) Sal P, who teams up with Sean Bee for a suitably horizontal dubscape that actually features spoon based percussion from the Liquid Liquid man! Coyote take a similarly languid skank approach on a remix that is best described as sprawling. Those wishing to be slapped out of this slumber will find solace in the opposing remixes from Andy Ash and Simoncino which add the requisite bumping rhythms - with the latter's 80s twilight boogie jam sensation particularly fine.

Cat: OTP 014. Rel: 29 Jun 12
Deep House
  1. Parkway
  2. Parkway (Runaway remix)
  3. Downtown 91
  4. Need Your Love
Review: Appearing for what seems to be the first time on Runaway's On The Prowl label, Evan Stalker brings a fulsome analogue house sound that calls upon the ice cold disco updates of Metro Area and nails them to a tougher kind of floor jam. "Downtown 91" is an impeccably toned workout with the perfect amount of everything; it's dark, sexy and made for the blur of a packed dancefloor. Lead track "Parkway" takes a more mellow approach, but leans heavily on the forceful presence of the bassline to anchor the airy synths, while Runaway cool things off even further with a polite reworking.
