He has his own distinctive style and it's packed with soul and emotion. Now he finally makes his debut in Japan with this new album on P-VINE which collects together two 12" EPs from him and friends. Steeped in rap jazz knowledge, it's all lounge grooves with naive melodies and gentle piano keys, dusty and deep beats, heady highs and romantic lows.

Review: Coming through with an intriguing take on the lo-fi hip-hop sound, Grey October Sound drops Lo-Fi City Pop, which moves through many different covers of classic Japanese city-pop hits. A fitting follow-up to the artist's last covers album, which focused on Studio Ghibli covers, this one builds hot on the heels on the recognition the artist has built for themselves over the past few years.Cclacky and boxy versions of the likes of Taeko Onuki's 'Tokai' and Miki Matsubara's 'Fly-Day Chinatown' all appear in dazzling instrumental-jazzy style, owing to the producer's rather efficient remix talents.

Review: Atlanta bass player Khari Cabral has joined up with Jiva for a first new album in some 13 years. The pair has a great musical chemistry as evidenced by this welcome return as they harness their creativity and draw on the acid jazz roots of the 90s to cook up something fresh. Jiva's reputation for a soul-boss nova funk sound also adds to the mix as these smooth, vibrant and lush sounds pair with real emotional weight from the vocal performances to make for an album of real delight for fans both old and new.

It is an alias of a hip hop beat maker from Montreal in Canada who also goes by the name of Specfics and is known for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His take on the genre is dusty and jazz inflected and as well as his sophomore long player Rock To This Beat from 2008 being reissue don vinyl, so too is his debut, 2007's With A Loop And Some Swing. It showcases his deft, light touch perfectly with the sort of laidback and romantic grovers that sooth the soul, while plenty of great guest verses add layers of extra charm.

Review: This ambitious project from P-Vine looks at an impressive 27 different compilation album and pulls together the best of them into an all new collection that arrives in celebration of Toru Hashimoto. This year makes his 30th anniversary as a compiler - in all his has put out more than 350 of them across the last three decades and many of them have been big hits such as Free Soul and Cafe Apres-midi. As such he is now rather a household name in Japan thanks to his next level ears and fresh taste - this collection will hopefully make him a more globally renowned talent.

Review: The vast and always vital P-VINE label out of Japan looks away from its fine run of reissues for a moment here to assemble a warming collection of lo-fi hip-hop, trip hop, chill wave, downtempo and plenty in between. It is perfect background music to a lazy afternoon or a gentle smoking sessions and brings together a wide range of artists from all across the spectrum on two sides of vinyl. There are romantic and dusty beats, more neo-soul leaning sounds, plenty of top level samples and noodling melodies all adding up to a great record.
