Review: Basic Rhythm's second appearance on Planet Mu plots a path from hardcore to footwork via jungle in devastating fashion. The A side houses the kinetic "2 Da Core" with mashed up vocal samples and crunchy drums into a bass heavy bomb, followed by "Get Up" with its hazy vocal samples and fat bass which comes together into a weird and wonderful rhythm. RP Boo's remixes are rather few and far between but we're treated to one here that is icy and skeletal, with echoing hits ringing out over impossibly deep sub bass. "Nah Ramp" is a destructive final offering with off grid clatter and lurching drums keeping you in a spin.

Review: Planet Mu usher in the return of Ital Tek and a new sonic approach for the long-term label associate, as Hollowed finds Alan Myson switching up his approach. The chance to immerse himself in a new studio set up was the impetus for Myson to engage in laying down countless hours' worth of loops, drones and textures. It is apparently a method he used as a teenager, but armed with years of recording experience he was now able to make the record he had then envisaged. Fans of the crisp style of dubstep Ital Tek made his name on might be a bit taken aback by this new direction, but there is plenty of fine music to explore here for those that like their sounds abstract and impressionistic.

Review: Has there been a Planet Mu or Ital Tek release that hasn't packed a punch? Often divisive as a result, whether it's usually the right punch or not is a personal matter, but suffice to say yaysayers will be won over by the latest from both stable and producer. It's heavy, intelligent music that's steadfast in its rejection of anything like the norms - sitting somewhere between IDM, EBM, ambient and dubstep. As you'd expect, then, there are moments of real intensity. In fact, more than a few. The dystopian hoovers and thunderous kick drum of slow death rave anthem 'Bladed Terrain', or the equally well-titled bassbin killer 'Deadhead'. But although plentiful (and bountiful), those moments are contrasted by elegance and wide-eyed cinematic grandeur - 'Chamber Music', 'Open Heart' and 'Diamond Child'. Perhaps one of the best bass records you'll find in summer 2020.

Review: Alan Myson makes a very welcome return with this new body of work under his Ital Tek moniker. As a staple of Planet Mu since his debut in 2008, his style has grown on its own terms while retaining a core identity. Myson's instinct for looming, cinematic melodies is maintained to great effect, coming through in abundance on driving-yet-beatless opener "Chamber Music". It's not all poised and refined though - "Deadhead" slaps with a darkside heft that nods to the heavier side of Myson's musical roots. Likewise "Bladed Terrain", which has a strong whiff of synthwave coursing through its veins thanks to those buzzing leads. With towering production values and strong melodic themes throughout, this is Ital Tek through and through, but equally a strong step on for a staggeringly skilled and ever-evolving artist.

Review: On his previous Konx-Om-Pax albums for Planet Mu, Tom Scholefield offered up a kaleidoscopic mixture of sweaty rave influences, colourful ambient melodies and abrasive, abstract sounds. On "Ways Of Seeing", his first album for three years, he's decided to flip the script, opting for a more optimistic, melodious and warmer sound that draws on a far wider range of influences. It's a switch that has paid dividends, with each successive track bringing a new sun-bright or morning-fresh blend of glistening electronics, tuneful lead lines, shuffling rhythms, leftfield pop hooks, deep space chords and humid aural textures. Yet for all the colouful electronic positivity, Scholefield still refuses to deliver unnecessarily polished tracks, instead opting for a thrillingly fuzzy finish fully in keeping with his experimental roots.

Review: For her second album, Brighton-based producer Lara Rix-Martin has made "a romantic eulogy to autumn and winter". As such this is a meditative yet eerie journey into ambient sounds and synthscapes that draw you in and welcome you to a beautifully lonely and isolated place. Classical synth arcs and found sounds of birds, rain and wind are seamlessly fused together into something that is altogether ethereal unhurried. "Murmur" is a particularly delightful track accompanied by bird call, "Winter Sun" exudes a real warmth and "Windross" is a darker, more unsettling foray deeper into the woods.

Review: Back in 1996, Richard D. James and Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas collaborated on a bizarre self-titled album under the name Mike & Rich. A cult addition to their respective highly-regarded canons that saw the pair applying their braindance template to easy listening and funk, the album soon came to be known as Expert Knob Twiddlers thanks to the excellent cover art. Newly reissued on Planet Mu, the album has been "carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original DAT tape [and] put into a more fitting order." Some twenty years on the album remains a playful listen made all the more compelling by the addition of seven previously unheard tracks. A must for any fans of Aphex Twin and u-ZIQ.

Review: There's plenty to get excited about on Silk Road Assassins' long-awaited debut full-length, which arrives some three years after their acclaimed debut EP, "Reflection Spaces". For starters, the trio has delivered something that neatly sidesteps convention, melding bustling, loose-limbed grime and trap rhythms with all manner of layered electronic elements. Some of these are dark and moody and others fluorescent, kaleidoscopic and tropical in tone. "State of Ruin" twists, turns and twists again on umpteen occasions, delivering a musical snapshot of our chaotic times that veers from paranoid intensity to rush-inducing bliss in what seems like the blink of an eye. OK, so we may have got a little carried away, but it's certainly a superb set that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Review: Forever a label looking to explore the boundaries of forward thinking electronic music, Planet Mu's investigative streak falls upon the post-internet productions of Eastern European collective WWWINGS. A prime example of modern-day music production, WWWINGS is formed of three musicians - Lit Internet, Lit Eyne and Lit Daw - based in Kamchatka Peninsula, Siberia and Ukraine who met using the Russian networking site VK and began dabbling in production together. Through the power of music blogs and online communities the trio started making tracks and getting some recognition, which has ultimately led to the album PHONEIXXX, picked up by Planet Mu. Some twelve tracks deep, this is very much a product of contemporary music-making with razor sharp sound design crafting some brutal club structures which sound like the Night Slugs crew in a particularly rotten mood.
