Review: Much of blues-titan Joe Bonamassa's back catalogue is being reissued by Provogue and Mascot Label Group right now. This one, The Ballad of John Henry, is a firm fan favourite from back in 2009 that lands, for the first time, on coloured vinyl. It has been remastered to heavyweight wax for the occasion and includes the bonus track, B.B. King's 'Chains and Things' as well as plenty of original and covers of the likes of Tom Waits and Sam Brown. Joe's seventh album provided the giant of the genre with another US Billboard Blues #1 and made him plenty of new fans across Europe.

Review: Two deacdes after volume one, we finally get Joe Bonamassa's Blues Deluxe follow up. Something of a self-test, with which he wants to judge how far his music has progressed in the past two decades, producer Josh Smith has again been drafted for studio duties, and apparently set out to present fans of this blues rock & roll icon with "a complete natural, relaxed Joe". Few could ask for much more, and nobody could deny that's one of the overriding vibes exuding from these tracks. Which isn't to say Bonamassa has paled or become any less intense and muscular in his approach to songwriting and craft. Fear not, then, there are some epic solos happening all over the place here, invoking the spirit of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, or Eric Clapton during the heyday of Cream. Perhaps more an extension than evolution, then, the takeaway point must therefore be that the recipe has and always will work incredibly well.

Review: Joe Bonamassa cut his teeth playing gigs from the tender age of 12, supporting the likes of B.B. King and sharing band line-ups with the son of Miles Davis amongst others. His solo career kicked off in earnest in 2000, and his third album Blues Deluxe arrived in 2003. It gathers together nine covers of blues standards, covering the likes of John Lee Hooker, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy and Robert Johnson as well as presenting three of his own original compositions. It's a high-end, polished take on the blues rock sound presented by a lifelong devotee, now remastered and repressed on double vinyl.

Review: Joe Bonamassa's name hangs with the weight of authority. One of the finest blues guitarists not to win a Grammy (yet), over the last 30 years his reputation among the rock 'n' roll community has grown from young upstart (getting his first big break at the age of 13 opening for B.B. King) to living legend; a guy who once looked up to the greats, and is now considered among them.

This is LP number 16, discounting live albums, and it's another guitar education. Recorded at Abbey Road, the album looks to celebrate the 1960s British blues explosion with a set of tracks raw enough to have been laid down then, drawing heavily on the genre's US birthplace, while owing some debt to Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. But it's not emulating that formative era UK homegrown. Instead, it's the culmination of a sound over half a century in the making.
