Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Earl Sixteen - "Freedom" (2:45)
  2. The Upsetters - "Freedom" (dub) (2:45)
Review: This is some essential original roots reggae from all the way back in 1977. Recorded by Earl (Sixteen) Daley, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Steely, Albert Malawi and Dalton Browne at the legendary Black Ark studios and now reissued by Belgian connoisseurs Roots Vibration, "Freedom" is a real stepper; sweet guitar licks and vocal work with drums and bass piled up on top of one another in perfect harmony. If you're after something deeper, flipover for the "Dub" version provided by The Upsetters. Timeless.

Work Up Yourself
Cat: ROOTS 16. Rel: 23 Oct 19
  1. Work Up Yourself (3:57)
  2. Rebel (3:32)
Review: Belgium's Roots Vibration continue to do good work and now look to Winston Jarrett (the Jamaican reggae singer who was part of Alton Ellis' group The Flames in the 1960s) for another re-issue that is well worthy of your attention. This is heavy hitting roots rarity produced by Dillinger in 1983, and here Jarrett is in fine form as he muses on self empowerment. The bass cuts deep and the tropical synths bring the sunshine into this most carefree groover. Flip over for "Rebel", all lit up with slick effects and a tinkling piano line that tugs at the heart strings.

Institutionalized Racism
Cat: ROOTS 31. Rel: 25 Mar 21
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Institutionalized Racism (4:02)
  2. Institutionalized Racism (version) (3:19)
Review: Belgium's Roots Vibration label is as reliable as they come for roots lovers and now they wind it back to the nineties for this crucial production by Ossie Thomas. It is one of the less well known tunes from Vivian Jones, but it shouldn't be with its computer-programmed digital drums and horns. They help guide Vivian's tremendously vocals, which muse on institutionalised racism which is just as rife decades later, so this one remains hugely relevant. Add in some heavy drops and you have a gold standard riddim.

  6. Going Home (Daughters Of Zion) (3:19)
  7. Gun Happy Police (2:30)
  8. Third World Man (4:17)
Review: Released in 1983 with backing from Undivided Roots, Vivian Jones made a real statement with his debut album. It's a slow, steady, spacious one with heavy rhythms and keys that seem to float. The simmering vocals from the UK artist are also key to elevating each tune and also to the fact that Jones went on to work with mainstays such as Jah Shaka, Bobby Digital, Junior Reid and many others. Vivian started as a DJ in the 70s and was a member of a number of different UK roots bands, but grew disillusioned so went to Jamaica in 1982 and has turned out more than 130 tunes since. This record includes well-know gems 'Flash It And Gwan' and 'Third World Man'.

Fear (limited 7")
Cat: ROOTS 15. Rel: 08 Jun 20
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Fear (4:13)
  2. Fear Dub (3:43)
Review: Winston McAnuff linked with the Black Kush Band to lay down the red hot rhythm that is "Fear" in 1979. In the early 2000s, they got together once more to re-record it and now it gets a special, limited edition 7" release of its own for the first time ever. It's a real roots classic with bird-call like flutes and natty trumpet stabs, tangled acoustic guitar riffs and plump drums. On the flip, there's a slowed down, spaced out and trippy dub version that allows the gnarly bass to really shine though and take the track into a different mood.

Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Winston McAnuff - "What A Man Sow" (4:38)
  2. Fatman Riddim Section - "What A Man Dub" (3:39)
Review: Dub heads will be keen to cop this hard to find, long out of print Winston McAnuff tune 'What A Man Sow.' This is its first time on 7". Only 500 have been pressed and it comes with a full colour sleeve as well as a tasty dub on the flip from Fatman Riddim Section. The main attraction though is the a-side, with its impassion vocals crying out up top and bearing plenty of raw and honest soul. Shakers and swaggering dub, reverberating bass and acoustic guitar riffs all colour in the airwaves in warm and welcoming ways.

Unchained (limited 7")
Cat: ROOTS 19. Rel: 08 Jun 20
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Winston McAnuff - "Unchained" (3:45)
  2. Fatman Riddim Section - "Still In Chains" (5:09)
Review: This old school Winston McAnuff tune has long been out of print. The Jamaican singer and composer behind it was also known as Electric Dread and fused funk, dub and reggae into his own unique forms, often with real social and political power in his lyrics. This is the first time it has ever been pressed on its own 7" and includes a natty dub on the reverse by Fatman Riddim Section. The original, "Unchained", has wailing vocals that speak of real passion and pain as they muse on black independence. The lazy grooves wiggle beneath, with rolling percussion and acoustic guitar riffs all adding to the experience.

Review: In 1979, dub legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry "adopted" a pair of musicians from Zaire who had been left stranded on Jamaica, put them together with his regular session players in the Black Ark studio he later burned down in a fit of psychosis, and recorded an album, "Roots From The Congo". As this fine reissue proves, the resultant music - a vibrant mix of Perry's particular brand of dub reggae and soukous music - was magical and unlike almost anything that had come before. For some reason it was only ever released on small labels in France and Belgium at the time, meaning that original copies are extremely hard to find. This reissue, then, is long overdue. Do yourself a favour and snap them up before they all disappear.

Captive (7")
Cat: ROOTS 21. Rel: 09 Dec 19
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Lee Perry - "Captive" (4:13)
  2. The Upsetters - "Dub Cap" (3:43)
Review: Roots Vibration keep up their tireless dub reissue work with another dig into the untouchable back catalogue of the one and only Lee "Scratch" Perry. Back to 1978, this is a slab of gold that was first recorded in the revered Black Ark studios the dub don owned before burning it down in a stoned and paranoid state. "Captive" finds him musing inwardly on the continual enslavement of black people in the West, calling for mental and spiritual liberation. The Upsetters once again dub it out on the flip side in excellent fashion.

Cat: ROOTS 32. Rel: 18 May 21
Roots/Lovers Rock
  1. Tell Me Teacher (3:55)
  2. Tell Me Teacher (version) (3:22)
Review: To celebrate the 20th birthday of 'Tell Me Teacher', one of Owen Rowe AKA Alpha Rowen's most potent roots reggae singles, Roots Vibration has decided to give the track the reissue treatment. In its original A-side form, 'Tell Me Teacher' is a digital reggae treat, with Rowe's soulful, patois-tinged lead vocals being joined by jangling keyboard riffs, warming electronic bass, tidy female backing vocals and jaunty machine drums. The accompanying 'Version' mix is a far more stripped-back and skeletal affair, with a slightly different bassline and spaced-out drums. These act as the perfect foil for Rowe's synth-horns and cheery piano stabs.

Strength & Power
Cat: ROOTS 11. Rel: 23 Oct 19
  1. Strength & Power (3:49)
  2. Strength & Power (version) (3:40)
Review: Canada isn't often associated with dub but on this occasion it's where Belgium's Roots Vibration head for a fine reissue. The Uplifter were a duo formed of vocalists Egbert Dennis and Marcel Williams and their poison is heavy bass. On "Strength & Power" they are blissed out and laid back, while the little guitar riffs get you in a trance as the drums boom away. The slick dub on the flipside is even more drenched in warmth and reverb. This is a limited edition of 500 so move quick.
