Review: You don't get to call your band Amyl & The Sniffers if the music is anything short of corrosive, in the best possible way. Launching at a serious pace from the off, this is punk at its modern best - a juggernaut of sweat, swearing and uncompromising songwriting that's only rival for your attention comes in the form of riffs and gritty chord instrumentation.

But the Melbourne, Australia band's second LP is far from a simple rehash of the first, which we could have also described in similar terms to those you just read above. This time round things feel more thoughtful, perhaps even patient in certain moments. Of course they still wear 'weirdos' on their sleeves, tongues often firmly placed in cheeks. But there's a depth here to the songwriting, a retro and introspective feeling that reveals far more than the debut album let us hear.

Review: Slingin' slangin guitars, skittering drums and synths from BRIT School graduates Black Midi deliver a sound that's semi-ironic with all matter of punk leanings. With references abound to New York's heyday of experimental new wave and art rock, this two-track 12" for Rough Trade sees the four-piece edge that bit closer to their anticipated debut album called Schlagenheim. Due for a release this June, most of Schlagenheim was said to have been laid down in five days with producer Dan Carey (Bat for Lashes, Bloc Party) and these two tracks go to some length in introducing the band's raw talent, their meteoric rise and vision of a gone but not forgotten CBGBs.

Review: The best thing since the Klaxons or Bloc Party have arrived. black midi! The student art rock band are bringing a new youthful energy and slight of malice back to the arena of post-indie inspired alternative guitar and synth music. They make this overtly known from the start with the supercharged opener that is "953", introducing an album that is said to have laid down eight of the record's nine tracks in just five days. Drums are fast and skittering, rhythms are dancey and guitars keep it Madchester jangley. "Speedway" (is that a wry Prodigy reference?) is among the album's highlights alongside the punk-funky "bmbmbm" and the short but trippy "Years Ago". With a 100 per cent backing by UK music institution Rough Trade: meet this generation's newest sensation.

Review: Since they first broke through in 2018, Black Midi has delighted in confounding expectations, with each successive release showcasing a band in continual, high-speed evolution. Cavalcade, the London band's second full-length excursion, continues these trends, expanding on their avant-garde, experimental rock sound via a swathe of wildly imaginative tracks that variously mix, mangle and mutate elements of noise rock, jazz, sun-kissed samba-soul, lo-fi punk-funk, post-rock, neo-classical, Bert Jansch style instrumental folk and blissed-out downtempo waltzes. The results are frequently staggering, always entertaining and restlessly inventive. There's no doubt that it will end up winning more critical acclaim - and most likely a bagful of awards - at the end of 2021.

Dean Blunt is nothing short of an enigma. Whether you're reading one of his interviews of few words, listening to the records that seem to both celebrate the avant-garde and obsess over it, or watching him descend into strange, otherworldly cacophonies on stage, usually shrouded in smoke, he's never really been an easy guy to pin down. And that's exactly what he's always been going for.

It's something of a surprise, then, to learn that Black Metal 2, the long-awaited, seven years in the making sequel to his critically acclaimed Black Metal, is actually pretty straight forward. In a Dean Blunt kind of way. Opening on the compressed strings and near-spoken word of 'Vigil', the record takes us into the deep dark depths of strange, hook-fuelled guitar poetry, and we never want to find our way back.

Review: From struggling 1980s underdog to darling of the 1990s Britpop scene, Jarvis Cocker's legacy will always be as a role model for the dejected, bespectacled poets hidden in and among Britain's hardest drinking pubs and weirdest countercultural clubs. Originally released as his second solo album of the post-Pulp years, in 2009 to be exact, while this end of his oeuvre doesn't hold the same mythicism as earlier work, there's plenty here deserving of this fresh pressing.

In many ways there's not a great deal here to distinguish between lone wolf and the band he fronted, but this is more a sign of creative force than running out of ideas. Here we have intelligent, rousing indie anthems ('I Never Said I Was Deep'), easy listening balladry with wry wit ('Hold Still') and barroom ballsiness ('Angela'), wrapped around a self-deprecating look at a break-up, and it's further evidence of Cocker's genius.

Review: The songwriting of Icelandic maverick Emiliana Torrini has found many counterpoints to help render its stark beauty in compelling new contexts, yet it may just be that this live album is the most diverting one yet. Opening up new vistas that may not have been originally suggested, the Belgian orchestra The Colorist offer up arrangements that blend richly textured strings and woodwinds one minute, and are happy to jump off the deep end of abstraction the next, all the while using her voice as the starting point, its emotional intensity undimmed and its delicate tones delicately augmented. A most understated tour de force.

Review: The Decemberists' eighth album sees the Portland gang return having significantly changed tack in the four years since their last album. Working with John Congleton, producer for St. Vincent and Future Islands, the band have made their use of synthesisers and electronics a focal point on 'I'll Be Your Girl', an element that had previously stayed in the background. To accompany this change, they've shifted their songwriting towards more synth-pop territory, evident on opener 'Once In My Life', 'We All Die Young' and lead single 'Severed'. A number of tracks bear the hallmarks of The Decemberists' classic Americana sound, but the contrasts at play make 'I'll Be Your Girl' their most adventurous record to date.

Review: In many ways "Prolix", the opening track of Irish punks Girl Band's sophomore album - is their most symbolic track to date. Not much happens, just a long, whirring, abstract refrain. And that's precisely the point. For almost two-minutes the album isn't doing nothing, but it is lying dormant, waiting to explode back into life. And explode it does, with "Going Norway" setting the bar high in terms of visceral, uncompromising and unforgiving music. Workouts like "Salmon Of Knowledge" recall wall of sound wormholes Liars taking us down in their most guitar heavy periods, with "Laggard" serving to accentuate the fact that these guys really do like to experiment. Scuzzy guitars growing from what sounds like an alarm into something far more immersive, before white noise is cut and we're left with gritty vocals and staccato drums, for a little while at least. Powerful stuff indeed.

Review: Goat Girl's self-titled 2018 debut album won plenty of plaudits for its mix of raucous, punky energy, confrontational lyrics and subtle nods towards everyone from Tom Waits and Nick Cave, to the Libertines and LA punk pioneers Gun Club. The all-female four-piece's cheekily titled follow-up, On All Fours, naturally retains some of these sonic ticks, but for the most part it's a rather different beast than its predecessor. For starters, its' a little more mature and complex lyirically, offering some kind of solutions to the issues they previously ranted about, while the music pairs gritty guitars and more complex vocal arrangements with spiralling synth sounds and dusty, analogue drum machine rhythms.

Review: Green Gartside is the Welsh frontman of cult band Scritti Polltti, here in solo mode on Rough Trade His latest 7" finally gets a release after various delays and on it are two covers of songs originally recorded by Anne Briggs, who is often regarded as one of the great British folk singers. The originals came out in 1971 on Briggs album The Time Has Come (and has also been re-released this year). In the hands of the so-called brainiest man in pop they become fresh propositions with interesting new perspectives.

Review: Where would we be without Jarvis Cocker? It would probably be a similar world, but one that never had the Michael Jackson BRIT Awards incident, Pulp's wonderfully astute take on socially and politically conscious Britpop, or 2019's British Christmas No.1, '(C**ts Are Still) Running The World', a 2006 track propelled to the top via a public bid to show the Conservative Party what at least some of the electorate were thinking. Despite cultural omnipresence, 'Beyond The Pale' is arguably the first proper JC record in over ten years - finally an album that again fully embraces the resolutely UK combination of geek and rebel which have made so much of his work stand the test of time this far. It's melodramatic, psychedelic, electronic pop that simultaneously celebrates one of the truly good aspects of Britain's place in the world today - musical scope and variety - while dishing out a welcome body blow to the country's downfalls, problems and misfortunes. Many of which haven't changed since 'It' landed in 1983.

Review: Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek and Jesu's Justin Broadrick have been long-term admirers of each other's work, and despite their having made their name in markedly different endeavours - Kozelek dealing out spectral frailty in Red House Painters and Broadrick shattering boundaries in avant-metal titans Godflesh - they have common ground in their dealings with human frailty. These things are manifest on this collaborative work, in which Broadrick's radiant soundscapes back up Kozelek at his most emotionally engaging. With guest appearances by members of Low, Will Oldham and Rachel Goswell, the epic scope of this work only throws the rawness of the subject matter into sharper relief, creating a pinnacle for both these maverick artists alike.
