Review: Sahko continues to deliver new vinyl pressings of lauded, in-demand items from the bulging back catalogue of sadly departed Finnish experimentalist Mika Vaino. The latest to get the treatment is Vaino's 2008 set Oleva, his fifth solo outing under the alternative O alias. The album remains one of Vaino's most magical, in part because it counters his usual icy, creepy and sometimes intense experimental sound with ambient, IDM and rhythm-driven pieces that variously draw on electro and industrial sounds. It contains some genuinely stunning moments of both darkness and light, including a number of widescreen epics that sound like they were tailor-made for black and white, European art-house movies.

Review: Back in stock. My word! This amazing, ice cool four track excursion into dark ambience and swirling spooky minimalism is at long last with us again. "Näkinkenkä (Shell)" sounds like early electro-acoustic droneage ala Charlemagne Palestine but with a 21st century edge - absolutely lush. "Suomot (Scales)" is purest early Sähkö, amazing and weird like the finest slo-mo Richie Hawtin minimal throb filtered through Delia Derbyshire's Radiophonic Workshop wires, killer. "Viimeinen Monni (The Last Catfish)" is amazing - deep bass, Rhythm & Sound vibed background static, minimal melodic drops - too, too much. Lastly comes "Jään Alla (Beneath The Ice)" which is a perfectly formed classically influenced repetitive piece. An amazing end to an amazing 12", buy or die.

Review: Back in stock. What a treat this is, badged up with the catalogue number Sahko 1.5 this is material from Ø, aka Mika Vainio which has never been previously released on vinyl! The tracks were written in 1993, some time in between the Sahko 001 and the Sahko 002 EPs, and released on the absolutely seminal "Tulkinta" album - it has taken 10 years for them to surface finally on wax. Now thank goodness you can play these tracks as they really should be heard, very loud and possibly in a sweaty club, getting your minimal groove on. With massive support recently from none other than the hairstyle-challenged Richie Hawtin, who featured a whole heap of Ø tracks in his latest "DE9" mix CD, this release couldn't be more timely and more desired. My suggestion would be to get hold of this now before it disappears once more forever.

Review: Back in stock. The second part of Mika Vainio's silver series (along with Sahko001), this EP is something of a techno classic. It would later appear on the Tulkinta album, but the 12" has been out of press for over ten years, so it is wonderful to see this back on the shelves, to entice a new generation of listeners into its glorious analogue techno world. What I find so endearing about the Ø records is Vainio's ability to make minimal, edgy techno music sound so glacial and other-worldly. An Ø record sounds exactly like an Ø record and in the twelve years since this was released, nobody has managed to match or recreate anything to come close to these tracks. You know what to do, grab this now before it disappears for another ten years! Totally unmissable.

Review: Nenad Markovi? cooks up some more of his magisterially slow and seductive sounds for the Sahko label outta Finland. Using his trusted tools he opens up on 'Iz Usta,' with a balmy vibe, dreamy pads and percolating beats all finished off with distant bird calls. It goes on for nearly ten minutes and makes great use of every single second. A real epic. On the flip is 'Danasananas,' another super slow workout that gets you in raptures with its gently jostling drum work and aqueous effects.

Review: Ah, yes...We finally see a vinyl edition of this timeless beauty, a real spectacle in sound and soul. Taken, anything on Finland's Sahko is always pretty incredible, but Ifrgay's testament is nothing short of spectacular and certainly stands out loud and proud within the label's hefty catalogue. There is no way to describe it apart from the fact that it's good music. Mixing elements of techno with Balearic and lo-fi, it's the perfect LP to listen to in more contemplative moods but also on the floor...That's what's so special about it. Our pick, if he had to choose one, would be "Seas Of Mars" - just brilliant. RECOMMENDED.

Review: Since the mid 1990s electronic explorer and sound designer Ryoji Ikeda has amassed a vast catalogue of releases. Some of these, though, are either hard to find or were only released on certain formats - hence this release on Sahko. It gathers together two lengthy compositions from early in his career that were previously only available on CD. Our pick of the pair is gorgeous A-side 'Luxus 1-3', a stunning, 16-minute suite from 1995 debut album 1000 Fragments that fuses deep space ambience with the orchestral musical cycles of American minimalism and plenty of gently mild-altering effects. Flipside 'Space', which first surfaced in 1998, is a ghostly piece of haunting sound design in which distance sub-bass tones struggle to break through a dense fog of creeping chords and digital watch bleeps.

Review: The thing about early synthesiser music is that there's always a new mad scientist to discover. Take Osmo Lindeman, for example. While the real electronic sonic historians will likely be familiar with this Finnish experimental pioneer and master film scorer, most other people probably won't be. Thankfully, then, this collection of his most plugged-in works can set the record straight. A package that celebrates his avant garde approach to marrying gadgets and gizmos with the brassy seduction of jazz. So although the tracks here may not be his most renowned contributions to the pantheons - see the soundtracks to Rakas, Totuus on armoton, and Tulipunainen kyyhkynen - the Electronic Works gathered by the Sahko Finland team are certainly among his most groundbreaking and boundary pushing. Like listening to what outer space may have sounded like if it put on a concert in the late-1960s featuring trumpet and sax maestros, prepare for a series of fascinating audio adventures and juxtapositions.

Review: With releases across Workshop, Meakusma and Hinge Finger, Madteo has shown himself to be one of the underground's most interesting figures, creating downtempo, druggy hybrids of hip-hop and deep house with a loose, MPC feel. Finnish purveyors of leftfield electronics Sahko may not be the most obvious home for his dusty brand of music, but on listening to Noi No it makes total sense; for the most part the album takes a beatless approach, "Rut-A-Round" combines sludgy drones with serene chords, "Gory Glory" feels like a house track with the beats missing, while "Vox Your Nw Yr Resolution" is a drowsy collection of vocal cut-ups, though "Dead Drop" is a bonafide dancefloor killer created in the way only Madteo could. Somewhere between sepia-tinted deep house and glacial glitch, Noi No sounds like nothing else released this year. Highly recommended.
