Dancin' & Prancin'
Cat: SA 8520. Rel: 27 Nov 15

Disco/Re-Edits
Dancin' & Pracin' (6:49)
Jingo (9:08)
Thousand Finger Man (8:56)
Rock & Shuffle (Ah-Ha) (9:38)
Jingo (original Shep Pettibone mix) (7:39)
Jingo (unreleased instrumental version) (7:30)
Thousand Finger Man (12" extended version) (12:23)
Thousand Finger Man (single version) (3:27)
Review: While Candido enjoyed successful and influential records in every decade he operated in, for house music Dancin' & Prancin' was by far his most historic record. Way ahead of its time in its groove dynamics, "Jingo" still packs a punch almost 40 years later while "Thousand Finger Man" was essentially the ultimate prototype deep house record. In case the originals weren't quite enough, both key tracks are presented with version variety including Shep Pettibone's groundbreaking drum-wizard epic take on "Jingo". A quintessential example of original edit craft.

Salsoul Re Edits Series Two: Danny Krivit (reissue) (Record Store Day 2017)
Cat: SALSBMG 02LP CLEAR. Rel: 02 Sep 21

Disco/Re-Edits
Double Exposure - "My Love Is Free" (Danny Krivit edit) (8:48)
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Runaway" (feat Loleatta Holloway - Danny Krivit edit) (8:41)
Ripple - "Victorious" (Danny Krivit edit) (6:42)
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Ooh I Love It (Love Break)" (Danny Krivit edit) (11:29)
Review: Edits don't come any more legendary than these highly sought after (and barely/if-ever pressed) extensions from the veritable don that is Danny Krivit. Bringing the dance magic out of any record and fuelling our focus on the most essential element of the original's groove, each of these edits is a schooling in version science from the lavish emotions of his "Runaway" to the epic, DJ secret weapon percussion frenzy at the end of "Victorious". Essential.

Lectric Love
Slave Of Love
Review: Yes! Super rare space disco from the vaults of Salsoul gets a much needed repress - expect to hear this one on all the left leaning dancefloors over the coming months. As Destroyers, Ramon Boulez, Bijou, and Edward Gash committed just the two tracks to wax back in 1977 with the assistance of prolific composers Jeffrey Lesser and Rupert Holmes. Both "Lectric Love" and "Slave For Love" are propelled forwards by grooves that dip into infinity and the instrumentation and harmonies that cover them are pure late night sleaze. This 12" has been pressed up illicitly several times over the years but this is a fully remastered, official reissue from Salsoul.

Love Comittee - "Law & Order" (Dimitri From Paris DJ Friendly Classic re-edit)
Skyy - "Here's To You" (Dimitri From Paris DJ Friendly Classic re-edit)
Review: This new reissue from Salsoul takes us back to the first volume of what became a vital Re-edits series from disco aficionado Dimitri From Paris. The ever-green disco don really pulled it out of the bag with these. Sure, the originals are all wellborn classics, but in his hands and with an extra sprinkling of dazzling disco dust, they become new and vital once more. The standout will always be Loleatta Holloway's 'Love Sensation' but deeper heads might before the funky bass of Inner Life's 'Moment of My Life.' There are also boogie tinged, string laced gems from Love Committee and ass-shaking synth jams from Skyy.

Review: We can think of few more qualified to play around with the vast Salsoul Records archive than long-serving disco lothario and re-edit maestro Dimitri From Paris. On Salsoul Mastermix, he delivers two contrasting but equally essential CDs. On disc one, he takes on the role of original Salsoul and Prelude "mastermixer" Shep Pettibone, crafting a whirlwind tour through the legendary imprint's catalogue rich in original disco scorchers, electrofunk slammers and boogie dubs. There are familiar favourites included, but also lesser-known highlights that have previously only been championed by serious disco diggers. On disc two, he dips into his own vaults of DJ-friendly re-edits, offering up killer scalpel interpretations of cuts from Skyy, Love Committee, Charo, Double Exposure and Loleatta Holloway.

Dam Swindle & Salsoul Remixes Vol 2
Cat: SALSBMG 422. Rel: 03 Aug 21

Disco/Re-Edits
Double Exposure - "Everyman" (Dam Swindle remix) (6:02)
Kongas - "Kongas Fun" (Dam Swindle edit) (5:18)
Review: Dam Swindle - the Dutch duo formerly known as Detroit Swindle - turn their hand to remixing some old disco gold here. First up is the iconic 'Everyman' by Double Exposure. They do a subtle job, touching up the bass with a contemporary edge and leaving the vocal to do much of the work. A fine move. The flip side is an edit with more of an eye on a full and sweaty dance floor. Kongas's 'Kongas Fun' is all mad synth solos and tribal drumming with a sense fo 60s funk squealing up ahead.

Love Thang (original mix) (7:59)
Love Thang (instrumental) (5:39)
Review: First Choice's era-defining disco funk anthem "Love Thang" gets dusted off by Salsoul. Timeless struts, silky bass flurries, huge orchestration and gutsy vocals; this still sounds spotless today. Complete with an acapella and instrumental, the real boon here is Kon's edit. If anyone is going to edit such a classic appropriately it's this guy; with a more mix-friendly, break and vocal focused intro, dynamic stripdowns and build ups and a big drum-focused pay-off, Kon reminds us how artful editing can be in the right hands... Again.

Double Cross (Larry Levan 12" mix) (7:25)
Review: By the time they pitched up on Salsoul in 1977, First Choice were already big news in the disco scene, having previously released a number of dancefloor anthems on Philly Groove Records. It was Salsoul, though, that employed New York DJs and studio buffs to turn their radio-length songs into extended dancefloor workouts. The fruits of the label's labours are showcased on this fine double-album compilation. It includes notably different versions of "Double Cross" from Shep Pettibone and Larry Levan (the latter being our pick of the pair), Tom Moulton's stupendously good mix of "Doctor Love" and lesser-known Tee Scott mixes of "Breakaway" and "I Can Show You (Better Than I Can Tell You)". Oh, and Frankie Knuckles' sublime interpretation of "Let No Man Put Asunder".

Disco/Re-Edits
First Choice - "Let No Man Put Asunder" (Moplen remix) (9:41)
Candido - "Jingo" (Moplen remix) (10:26)
Review: Italian purist editor Moplen gets given the raw stems of two famous Salsoul classics: First Choice's game-changing "Let No Man Put Asunder" and Candido's light-years ahead of time thumper "Jingo". The former gets a little dancefloor edge as the vocal begins to loop towards the end and the groove gains more momentum. The latter remains one of the most driving, physical and addictive tunes Salsoul ever released but with added length and more of dynamic in the percussion. Known for adding little to no additional production, once again Moplen's extensions and rearrangements are done in their most honest form.

Disco/Re-Edits
First Choice - "Doctor Love" (Kerri Lost mix) (7:53)
Double Exposure - "Everyman" (Joe Claussell classic mix) (9:58)
Review: Salsoul, Kerri Chandler, Joe Claussell; do we need to say any more? Disco remixes don't get any more authentic than this. Both still sounding as powerful and beautiful as they did on first commission: Kerri's twist on First Choice's "Doctor Love" comes with that confident strut and energetic dynamic that's driven by the strong strings, Rochelle and Annette's gutsy vocals and Kerri's unrelenting 4/4. Claussell, meanwhile, does the epic breakdown-to-build-up technique that he made his own. A spiritual trip that explores every aspect and element from the percussion to Double Exposure's golden harmonies, drop this and no one will leave the dancefloor for the full stretch. Incredible.

The Salsoul Orchestra - "Take Some Time Out (For Love)" (Delphi edit 1) (5:36)
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Take Some Time Out (For Love)" (Delphi edit 2) (8:00)
Review: Salsoul herald the new generation with this powerful double A 12" featuring brand new edits of two out and out label classics; Germany's Phonk D flips First Choice into a total barn rattler. Jacking, loopy but every bit as urgent and infectious as the original, it's less of an edit and more of a total rebuild, crafted with full celebratory spirit. On the B-side we have Tiger & Woods' Delphi laying down two immaculate extensions of Salsoul Orchestra's "Time Out". Edit 1 whips up the full instrumentation while Edit 2 strips things back for more focus on the vocal. Contemporisations don't get much hotter than this.

Salsoul Orchestra - "Take Some Time Out" (Dr Packer rework) (6:43)
The Jammers - "Be Mine Tonight" (Dr Packer rework) (5:50)
Review: Barely a fortnight has passed since Salsoul offered up a double-pack of Dr Packer reworks of classic tracks, but the Australian producer is already onto his next batch of vintage disco and boogie remixes. He begins by subtly beefing up Loleatta Holloway's orchestrated disco classic "Hit & Run", wisely emphasizing a relaxed but bouncy disco-house groove and dubbed-out vocal section, before going dub disco crazy on a suitably spacey, low-slung take on Aurra's boogie-era jam "Such A Feeling". Record two sees him charging towards peak-time floors via fine multi-track edit of Salsoul Orchestra's "Take Some Time Out", before delivering a fine, light touch revision of the Jammers' superb, synth-heavy electrofunk classic "Be Mine Tonight".

Hit It N Quit It (Cratebug & Jamie 3:26 Edit Remix) (reissue)

Disco/Re-Edits
Hit It N Quit It (Cratebug & Jamie 3:26 edit remix) (7:33)
Review: Chicago stalwarts Cratebug and Jamie 3:26 were relatively little-known when they joined forces to create this killer rework of Loleatta Holloway's Salsoul classic "Hit 'N' Run" way back in 2011. The interpretation, which laces choice passages of Holloway's impassioned vocal over a loopy and driving house groove reminiscent of Paperclip People's "Throw", first appeared on vinyl as part of Lumberjacks In Hell's now impossible-to-find Chicago Service compilation four years ago. Happily, Salsoul has decided to reissue it on this must-have, single-sided 12". It's more of a remix than a re-edit, and is guaranteed to get things going at peak-time. Basically, it's a banger, and you need it in your box.

Review: You'd be hard struck to find any essential disco anthem without the unmistakeable talent of Loleatta Holloway on it. One of the most distinctive voices in dance music history, her collaborations with the legendary NYC label Salsoul are the stuff of legend - and this collection features some of the American songstress' highlights from the label's catalogue. The most sought after versions have been included here by the undisputed masters of the edit: Shep Pettibone, Walter Gibbons, Larry Levan and Tom Moulton to name a few. And the tracklisting? The hits are all on here, rest assured: "Love Sensation" (Tom Moulton mix), "Hit & Run" (Walter Gibbons 12" Jungle mix), "All about The Paper" (Bobby Guttadaro 12" remix) and more all feature.

Stand Up (Pangaea mix)
Cat: SALSBMG 08. Rel: 05 Dec 17

Bass
Stand Up (Pangaea mix) (5:48)
Review: If you've been out and about this summer, there's a fair chance that you'll have danced hard to Pangaea's fine remix of Loleatta Holloway's "Stand Up", a gospel-influenced screamer that was repeatedly sampled by house producers in the mid 1990s. Pangaea's version first appeared on his killer, double A-side "2 Remixes" white label back in August, and here gets an official Salsoul Records release. It's amongst the producer's most potent revisions to date, with Holloway's brilliant vocal rising above a tough-as-teak fusion of speaker-troubling sub-bass, clap-happy, two-step drum machine beats and layered tribal percussion. Heavy and carnival-friendly, it's quickly turning into one of the dance anthems of 2017.

Review: There are very few truly essential disco albums, but Inner Life's eponymous debut album is one of those. Recorded and released in 1981 by the all-star production team of Greg Carmichael, Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess, with lead vocals from a then young Jocelyn Brown and mixes courtesy of Tee Scott and Larry Levan, the album is one of the finest in Salsoul's catalogue. Here the original album gets a remastered re-issue, with the superb six-track set - which includes such classics as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Make It Last Forever" - with a second plate of extended club versions. This includes two brilliant Levan revisions and - most excitingly of all - the never-before-released "Let's Get This Thing Together".

Salsoul: The Reflex Revisions Part 2
Cat: SALSBMG 43LP. Rel: 19 Nov 21

Disco/Re-Edits
Inner Life - "I Like It Like That" (7:26)
Metropolis - "I Love New York" (8:30)
Leroy Burgess - "Heavenly" (10:02)
Aurra - "A Little Love" (7:45)
Review: Unlike most disco re-edit EPs, Salsoul's latest instalment of 'Reflex Revisions' are "proper" remixes, making full use of original master stems and session tapes sourced from the parent artists themselves. With all four tracks handled by French producer and remixer The Reflex, we know we're in good hands here - he's been at it since 2012. Reflex Revisions don't just add a janky kick beneath a beatgridded 16-bar loop, but rather, they move and sway with the tracks' original feels. Our case in point: 'A Little Love' completely reimagines the drum section found on Aurra's 1983 original, making the whole sonic experience much clearer and brighter. As much can be said for Metropolis' downtempo 'I Love New York', on which Reflex here makes the song grander, wider. Compared to most re-editors, this is an impressive feat occurring in a different ballpark.

Orlando Riva Sound - "Body To Body Boogie" (Late Nite Tuff Guy edit) (5:30)
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Ooh I Love It (Love Break)" (Late Nite Tuff Guy Muscle edit) (6:42)
Review: Salsoul has always been good at getting contemporary producers to reinterpret classics from its bulging catalogue, with recent years bringing fresh edits and reworks by The Reflex, Moplen, DJ Pope, Dimitri From Paris and Late Nite Tuff Guy. Here the latter returns with a second helping of tastefully tooled-up revisions. The Australian producer kicks things off with a warm and woozy hybrid disco/house take on Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up" that's quite a departure from the original mix. Over on side B, he turns in a languid and groovy, mid-tempo house version of Orlando Riva Sound's overlooked "Body To Body Boogie" before successfully revising Salsoul Orchestra's much-loved "Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)" whilst retaining most of the original vocals and instrumentation.

The Salsoul Orchestra - "Take Some Time Out (For Love)" (unreleased 12" short version) (3:24)
Review: Salsoul rekindle their funk with a return the oft-forgotten boogie corner of their repertoire. All released between 82-83, each track cuts bold funk shapes from the label's disco roots: an early Shep Pettibone edit gives Instant Funk a tougher, groove-focused edged, Regisford and Birch really gave life to the slap bass and percussion on "Stroke It" while both Mason and Dayo's "You Can Do It" and The Jammers dim the lights for slower, sugar-coated come-to-bed-boogie jams. Finally, one of Salsoul Orchestra's last recordings "Take Some Time Out" enjoys a kindly rewind by way of a short, sweet 12" version. Essential.

Review: Leroy Burgess and Larry Levan's famous 1981 post-disco project enjoys a well-deserved reissue. Leroy's vocals are at their very peak, flexing around that midrange that allows him to dynamically hit both high and low moments while Levan's production ensures the entire band shines in the right places; the salubrious slap bass on the Wonder-esque "Dancing Into The Stars", the full-flavour backing vocal harmonies on "Something Else", the interstellar keys on "Lay It On The Line"... Everyone in the Logg project plays a pivotal role in one of the coolest boogie records of the era. Essential.

Dancing Into The Stars (extended version) (11:05)
Review: Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.

"Oh Love" and "Feel My Love" are the emotion-rich torch songs while supreme, clam-tight, hand-clapping, hip-strutting boogie grooves are in abundance on "Party On The Corner" and "Rollalong Songs". Standing the test of time immaculately, it's one of Salsoul's ultimate boogie documents.

The Jammers - "Be Mine Tonight" (Dimitri From Paris DJ Friendly Classic re-edit) (5:43)
Love Committee - "Just As Long As I Got You" (Dimitri From Paris DJ Friendly Classic re-edit) (6:34)
Review: Dimitri has been very generous with his edits this year, having unleashed some of his finest DJ weapons in the form of the "Brooklyn Edits" EP and this refreshed trilogy of classic Salsoul revisions. They need little introduction as we take off with the iconic harmonies and horns of "Ooh I Love It" land with the incredible soul fusion of Love Committee's oft-covered (never bettered) feels odyssey "Just As Long As I Got You". With trips to New York for silky disco with Skyy and a synth boogie freak-out from The Jammers, it's once again another reminder that no one does edits quite like the man from Paris.

Review: Plenty of the old classics can benefit from a little modern touch up, and that's the story on this latest offering from Salsoul, who once again open their vaults. Italian maestro Moplen is given free rein and turns his hand to Skyy - "Here's To You", firstly with a boogie driven rework that is all about an irresistibly knotted bassline. The dub version places even more focus on it, and on the flip The Salsoul Orchestra - "Ohh I Love It (Love Break)" gets teased out to perfection. The classic vocal is left in place while the sensuous bass, gliding hits and rousing strings will make their way deep into your affections.

Salsoul: The Reflex Revisions (reissue)

Loleatta Holloway - "Mama Don't Papa Won't" (The Reflex Revision) (8:40)
Candido - "Dancin' & Prancin'" (The Reflex Revision) (8:11)
Skyy - "Let's Celebrate" (The Reflex Revision) (7:30)
Rafael Cameron - "Boogie's Gonna Get Ya" (The Reflex Revision) (7:53)
Review: London-based "multi-track edit" specialist the Reflex is the latest producer to have his way with gems from Salsoul's epic back catalogue. All four rubs are up to his usual high standard - he begins by dubbing out and rearranging "Mama Don't Papa Won't", a lesser-known Loleatta Holloway cut from the halcyon days of disco, before turning piano-and-percussion-heavy Candido favourite "Dancin' and Prancin'" into a sweaty, all-action extended workout. On the second record he heads towards boogie territory, giving Skyy's "Let's Celebrate" a sweet, synth-and-delay-laden makeover before making great use of the urgent, bass-heavy groove underpinning Rafael Cameron's brilliant "Boogie's Gonna Get Ya". Recommended.

Jamie Lynn - "You Ain't Got No Money" (Twice & Volcov edit) (6:31)
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Salsoul Rainbow" (Kai Alce NDATL edit) (9:10)
Review: The current owners of iconic disco label Salsoul have previously been criticized for some of their remix choices - most notably Marquis Hawkes' revisions of classic Logg tunes - but we can't envisage many finding fault with this superb compilation. It features revisions of classic and little-known cuts from DJs and producers associated with Italy's Sounds Familiar crew. Highlights include a killer cover of Candido classic "Thousand Finger Man" by GE-OLOGY (here titled "ReFingered With Love"), a superb re-edit of The Strangers' P-funk cut "Stimulation" by Twice and Volvov, a dusty, Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits style tweak of "Salsoul Rainbow" by Kai Alce, and a typically on-point rearrangement by Mark Grusane of Civil Attack's little-known boogie floorfiller "On The Phone".

Fully representing Salsoul's in-house musicians and writers across the rollcall, we're treated to the full new York spectrum from the incredible theatre of the Salsoul Orchestra right the way through to the punctuated falsettos and cinematic dynamics of Orlando Riva Sound's "Body To Body Boogie". Review: Salsoul strutted through many shades during its lengthy tenure but its early 80s funk boogie output was especially vital. Proof, if needed, can be found right here on this brand new fully remastered collection. Ranging from the deep spacey disco chugs of Larry Levan's epic take on Skyy's "First Time Around" and breath taking oomph of Leroy Burgess's "Heavenly" to much dreamier jams such as Surface's romantic dancefloor ballad "Falling In Love" and the poppier sing along of Aurra's "Checking You Out", this is Salsoul at its most direct and funkiest. With edits from Kevorkian, Pettibone and Levan, this marks some seriously important waymarks from disco to house.

Review: On the latest installment in their Mastermixes series of remix retrospectives, Salsoul shines a light on the legendary DJ-turned-mixer who provided the world with the first ever commercially available 12" rework: Walter Gibbons. Fittingly, the collection begins with that pioneering revision - a near ten-minute extension of Double Exposure's expansive "Ten Per Cent" - before running through some other sought-after Gibbons revisions from their bulging vaults. Alongside well-played versions of New York disco anthems by Loleatta Holloway, Love Committee and First Choice, you'll also find inspired but lesser-known extensions of Love U Madly Orchestra's soaring, string-drenched "Rocket Rock" and Cellophane's largely forgotten - but rather good - 1978 B-side "Dance With Me (Let's Believe)".

Review: With the exception of Tom Moulton, no remixer did more to shape the sound of Salsoul's club-focused 12" singles than Shep Pettibone. Here, Salsoul celebrates his immense contribution to their disco and boogie output by gathering together some of greatest "Mastermixes". There are naturally plenty of familiar favourites present - think Loleatta Holloway's soaring "Love Sensation", Pettibone's much-sampled rework of First Choice's "Let No Man Put Asunder" and the soulful, synth-heavy brilliance of Leroy Burgess's "Heartbreaker" - alongside lesser-known but no less killer re-rubs of the Salsoul Orchestra, Candido, Instant Funk (a righteous, ten-minute workout in the style of Larry Levan's remixes of the period) and Weeks & Co.

Review: Bless you Salsoul! Over a decade ago the label enlisted Hisa Ishioka of King Street Sounds / Nite Grooves to curate a Japan only series of CD compilations that drew together many of the tracks that defined Larry Levan's defining deck stewardship of the Paradise Garage. Someone at the label was clearly wise to the idea that these compilations were eminently suited to the vinyl format, with the inaugural volume issued late last year typically snapped up. A second triple vinyl pack of New York Garage classics is now available on wax and is rife with killer, iconic dancefloor material from the likes of Instant Funk, Candido, Loletta Holloway, First Choice and more.

Review: Following two well-received volumes, Salsoul presents a third celebration of the records championed by Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage. There are, of course, plenty of must-have disco and boogie jams present (think Skyy's "Here's To You", Jimmy Castor Bunch's "It's Just Begun", Ripple's sweet "The Beat Goes On And On" and Inner Life's peerless "Moment Of My Life"), alongside a selection of less-celebrated - but no less essential - cuts. In this category we'd put The Salsoul Orchestra's grandiose, heavily percussive "Magic Bird of Fire" and Orlando Riva Sound's "Moonboots", a decidedly epic, almost psychedelic chunk of heavy instrumental disco that deserves wider recognition.

Review: The official Salsoul re-releases keep on coming! As with every other series edition, the fourth instalment of the Larry Levan collection is a slew of ground-breaking, floor-shaking hits from the late 70s. Fusing boogie, disco, soul, funk and everything else, Levan was a key exponent in ensuring each one of these tracks were as successful as they were. From Candido's cosmic strutter "Dancin' & Prancin'" to Loleatta Holloway's heavily sampled "Hit & Run" by way of the insistent boogie bass and gutsy vocals of "Handsome Man" (both the original and Larry's own previously unreleased edit), this collection sheds light on Levan's ability to identify only the very best grooves and feelings.

Review: There have been numerous compilations issued looking to offer some insight into the magic that Larry Levan brought to Paradise Garage, but few have rarely captured it as well as this selection from Salsoul. Originally released in CD format just over a decade ago, Hisa Ishioka of King Street Sounds / Nite Grooves put the compilation together solely for the Japanese market and it's popularity resulted in two further volumes. Criminally it never received a vinyl release, but that error is corrected here some 11 years later with a triple LP pressing that is a perfect introduction to some timeless music for a generation new to the power of disco.
