  7. Flying Cobra - "Passing"
Review: Space Of Variants recently described this collaboration between label artists Aura Minimum (real name Vladislav Ishkov) and Flying Cobra (Alexander Khaliulin) as "modern deep sound goodies". While that's a little vague, it's certainly accurate. Across a range of solo and jointly produced tracks, the pair explores a warm, hazy, atmospheric and quietly colourful sound that emphasizes meditative ambient electronics - drowsy chords, drifting motifs and yearning melodies - over the hypnotic dub techno and deep techno grooves that nestle below. It's a formula that results in a hugely soothing, ear-pleasing and smile-inducing listening experience.

Review: Alexander Khaliulin first donned the Flying Cobra alias earlier this year for an album on Space Of Variants that neatly showcased his seemingly innate grasp of atmospheric dub techno soundscapes. "Flowers Decay Quickly" is the producer's surprisingly speedy follow-up. It's another heady and intoxicating affair, with Khaliulin sashaying between the languid, head-in-the-clouds ambient of "Emanation", the gentle but hypnotic dub techno shapes of "Sleepless" and "Way Above", the sun-kissed laziness of "Night Walk" and the fantastically dubbed-out, slow motion soundscapes such as yearning closing cut "Light Of Truth Has Gone Out".

White Dub (CD)
Cat: SV 32. Rel: 30 May 19
Techno
  1. White Dub (Mr Cloudy remix)
  2. White Dub (Michael Mantra remix)
  3. White Dub (Mr Cloudy edit)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, this collaborative album had its roots in a 2013 request from Michael Mantra for dub techno and ambient dub stalwart Mr. Cloudy to remix tracks from his Silent Season-released 2013 LP "Light In My Head". Six years later, and after sending parts and versions back and forth, the pair has conjured this set of lengthy, deep and mind-altering excursions. Mr. Cloudy provides versions of the collaborative "White Dub": an ultra-deep, spaced-out "Remix" that smothers a gentle, slowly shifting ambient dub rhythm in heavily processed snatches of field recordings and atmospheric aural textures around and a sparser, more spaced-out "Edit" that's closer in tone to Mantra's otherworldly, dub-influenced soundscapes. Sandwiched in between you'll find a hypnotic version by Mantra that was partly created using music concrete techniques.

Ambient/Drone
  1. Magnetik Tide 1
  2. Magnetik Tide 1 (Toki Fuko redub)
  3. Magnetik Tide 2
  4. Magnetik Tide 2 (Toki Fuko reshape)
Review: It's been three years since Sergey Barkalov AKA Mr Cloudy released Perceived, a set of spacey ambient, far-out drone textures and dub techno shufflers that some critics believed was his strongest work to date. For this sequel, he's decided to take a slightly different approach, offering up two long workouts, each accompanied by a remake by longtime friend and occasional collaborator Toki Fuko. It's quite a nifty trick; while "Magnetik Tide 1" is a largely beat-less soundscape built around gently morphing chords, Fuko's "ReDub" re-casts it as a chunk of hypnotic techno. Foki's version of "Magnetik Tide 2" is even bolder, rhythmically, dragging Barkalov's floatation tank sound design towards early morning dancefloors.

Review: Perceived, Sergey Barkalov's fourteenth album under the Mr. Cloudy guise, first slipped out back in 2014, though this is the first time it's had a "proper" CD release. Like much of Barkalov's work, it offers an evocative fusion of deep space ambient, droning textures, dub influences, and impeccable sound design. It's arguably one of his strongest and most aesthetically pleasing excursions, with the continuous, six-part suite subtly shifting in emphasis and focus across the album's duration. While Barkalov's looped synth motifs are undeniably deep and spacey, on occasions they also sparkle, giving the album a positive feel that's impossible to dislike. If Pete Namlook had made a record with Deepchord, it would probably have sounded like Perceived.

Review: In recent times, Sergey Barkalov has begun to look back over his vast discography and re-release selected albums. Space of Variants first surfaced on Germany's Confineless Recordings back in 2012, and here gets a deserved reissue on the Russian producer's own label. It's undoubtedly amongst the ambient and dub techno heavyweight's finest releases, and offers a near perfect balance between deep space textures ("Intention"), dubbed-out ambience ("Reduce", "Cloudy Spaces"), and minimalist dub techno ("Space of Variants"). Like the original CD release, it also boasts a trio of reworks of "Space of Variants": a thrillingly horizontal dub techno rework from Sub Made, a more fluid and positive ambient dub rendition from Desove, and a quietly hypnotic and trance-like rearrangement by Arkhaious.

Hypnotic Dub Season (CD limited to 50 copies)

Techno
  1. Dub I
  2. Dub II
  3. Dub III
Review: Given that they not only share space on the same label, but also both explore the deeper end of the dub techno spectrum, we were rather surprised to learn that "Hypnotic Dub Season" marks the first collaboration between musical cosmonauts Mr Cloudy (AKA Sergey Barkalov) and Gradient (Igor Arsenjev). So, was it worth the wait? If you're into dub techno, then certainly. The album is made up of three epic workouts (the last of which runs to an astonishing 30 minutes) in which the pair wrap hissing aural textures, echoing melodic motifs and sumptuous, huggable ambient electronics around chunky, slowly shifting dub techno rhythms. If you like your music hazy, spaced-out and - as the title promises - hypnotic, then you need this in your life.

Review: While the Space of Variants label is perhaps more readily associated with hazy dub techno, it also has a neat sideline in similarly spaced-out ambient cuts. "Ambient Addict" celebrates this side of the label's musical personality via 11 tracks from a variety of obscure, established and up-and-coming artists. There's much to admire throughout, from the near neo-classical electronic movements of DT-90's "Ionosphere" and the enveloping ambient techno shuffle of "Intrusing Dew" [sic] by Desove, to the slow-burn ambient dub smokiness of Otzim's Lee's "Divers" and the swirling, reverb-heavy drone textures of Flying Cobra's dense and otherworldly "Aether".
