Purple (3:37)
Purple (dub mix) (4:12)
Review: Every once in a while, a release is slung our way that charms us so deeply that we're not sure what angle approach it from. Deliberately retro, but with one foot in the cosmic, Star Creature are a Chicago-based label whose take on space disco is extra janky and electronic. AVOP's new track 'Purple' is rattlesnaking and sultry, delving into a pitch-perfect rumination of a disco sound that 70's producers could only dream of achieving. Coming to purple 7" vinyl, the track makes "Russian violet cyber grapes rain in Chicago", as asserted by the artist.

Review: Following some great releases for the likes of his own imprint Mellophonia, Omena and Cala Tarida Musica, Mikhail Khvasko aka A Vision Of Panorama returns with a new one this week for Star Creature Universal Vibrations out of The Windy City - Chicago, Illinois. He serves up the late night boogie-down vibes of 'Purple' with its seductive vocal that's the perfect soundtrack for night drive down the coast on a balmy evening, plus there's a handy dub on the flip.

Piano Sunset

Balearic/Downtempo
Piano Sunset (4:32)
Lost In Palms (4:55)
Review: The diffuse hues and retro-feeling colours of the artwork on this new 45rpm from Star Creature perfectly embody the downtempo and Balearic sounds within. They come from A Vision Of Panorama who seems to ever more have the dance floor in sights over his last few releases. That's not to say these are banging tunes - but they do have lovely grooves. 'Piano Sunset' is a real spine tingler with 80s keys and mid tempo drums that come alive with crisp hits and a fresh bassline. 'Lost In Palms' then has a shuffling and low slung groove with nice wet hits. Add in some more lush chords and you have a real pearler.

Review: The summer is almost here which means this is exactly the sort of record we want to be reaching for. It's a lush and tropical work of idealised disco grooves, deepest house, Balearic, smooth jazz and Mediterranean cool that cries out to be played loud while you sip on cocktails and dream of being somewhere utterly blissful and classy. Dreamy textures define each cut with nice fresh rhythms, glistening chords and lush melodies all sprinkled with delightful percussive detail. Big up to A Vision Of Panorama for serving up a beautiful album that is sure to soundtrack the warmest months of the year for many.

Pleasure Cruise (feat Falcone) (4:40)
Acid Dreaming (4:11)
Review: Deliciously care-free, sunny-sided and mildly cosmic: Brooklyn's Aimes delivers yet another pert pop package. "Pleasure Cruise" is a hooky, synth pop jam that will have you singing along before the end of the first play. Imagine Hot Chip on the fluffiest of jags or Sebastien Tellier on the poppiest of flexes and you're kinda close. The vocoder-heavy lolloper "Acid Dreaming", meanwhile, sits somewhere between Air and Jim Noir with its unabashed retro-future charm. The pleasure is ours.

Don't Stop (3:56)
Review: Brian Ellis and Tim Tucker's Birdbone project breathes its first ever breaths with two almighty wallops of synth-slapping boogie funk. "Heart Attack" tickles hard with pre-game mischief and some of the finest keytar solo wriggles you'll hear outside of Chromeo's studio. "Don't Stop" takes us just a touch closer to disco with Prelude-style refrains and a drop so dreamy you'll may need to pack a fresh pair of long-johns. Let's hope Birdbone is a permanent fixture in both artist's lives.

Review: Adam Chini is described as "Prince if he grew up in Southern California" and this EP is all the convincing you need. It is packed with plenty of spaced out dream funk vibes and lush synth lines. 'Slide' is a talk box game with rigid rhythms and vocals light up by scintillating chords and squelchy bass. A First Touch remix follows and then come the sundown vibes of the Instrumental - its warm, disco-fried and perfectly seductive for early evening dances. The final First Touch instrumental mix closes down this crucial package.

Ashes (5:32)
Milky Way (4:49)
Review: Giovanni Damico has done plenty of great house EPs in his time but on this one he explores a retro Italo and disco sounds with lashings of synth and wave influences. His EP for Star Crature opens with 'Ashes' which could well be a long forgotten classic getting a timely reissue. The machines bring a nice analogue texture, the melodies are filled with 80s nostalgia and the whole thing is coated in dust. Flip it over and you will find the more leggy cosmic explosions and chugging basslines of 'Milky Way' which is finished with a perfect vocal and plenty of nice vocoder sounds.

Fashion Tape (5:43)
Out Of Control (5:03)
Moblast (6:41)
Review: Following up great releases such as Fall In The Groove and Try It Out / Out Of Control, Giovanni Damico returns to Chicago imprint Star Creature with another interstellar Chicago to Italo connection on The Power EP. His modern take on dance floor disco usually blurs the lines between classic boogie funk, afro and Italo but this one is more a an early house affair. Just like on the spaced-out late night jam 'Analog Session', while the first wave sounds of The Windy City are channeled on the emotive 'Fashion Tape' on side A. Flip over and get your head down into the groove on the acid jack of 'Out Of Control, followed by one more authentic sounding proto-house groove on closing cut 'Moblast'. Tip!

Watch Out (4:54)
Nowhere (5:49)
Night Time (5:04)
Voodoo (5:07)
Cowbell (Eeh Aah Eeh) (4:31)
Review: Italian producer Giovanni Damico has always put plenty of effort into making his sounds come alive with lush, rich melodies whatever genre he's making. Now it is Afro and disco grooves that power this EP, with more of those majestic chords. They have a retro feel here - with tinniness and old-school futurism embraced over elastic and acrobatic beats and bass. 'Watch Out' is a party starter to kick off then there are more lazy and sleazy jams like 'Nowhere' and there twisted electronics of 'Voodoo' bring plenty of invention and a variety of vivacious sounds to this EP.

Make Me Wanna (3:22)
Wait Up (3:28)
Review: The latest dinked 7" single on Tim Zawada and Ben Van Dyke's essential Star Creature label comes from Diamond Oritz, AKA boogie and '80s soul revivalist Jeremy Diamond-Oritz. While there are many overlooked gems in the producer's back catalogue, there's little as rush inducing as "Make Me Wanna". A slick, soulful song with authentically rubbery and kaleidoscopic '80s soul/boogie production, it sounds like a long lost classic. The breezy, slap bass-wielding instrumental B-side, "Wait Up", is arguably even better. Like the A-side, it boasts some serious good synth action and a groove that you just have to dance to.

Fool 4 U (3:46)
Review: The dazzling Star Creature label has an impossibly feel good future retro disco-funk gem on its hands here courtesy of E Da Boss. E has been turning out killer jams for many years and this time joins forces with Ishtar for 'Fool 4U'. It has funky-ass bass slaps down low, with plenty of jazzy and cosmic keys up top and boogie grooves that make you move. The vocal is acrobatic and brings sultry soul on the E live remix. On the flip the original is a little more upright with 80s chord vamps, noodling guitar licks and the vocal still bring the soul. Two gorgeous cuts for cosy dancefloor vibes.

Brazao (4:27)
Review: When it comes to authentically colourful, synthesizer-heavy revivalist electrofunk, few have a better track record than either E. Live or Star Creature, a label whose releases sound like long lost relics of the 1980s. For this reason you'd expect "Boogie For Life" to be superb... and it is. Those with an expansive knowledge of boogie will hear nods towards all sorts of original era artists and tracks throughout the mini-album's original compositions, from Fonda Rae ("Boogie For Life") and Herbie Hancock (the effortlessly brilliant "Sunny Side Up"), to D-Train (the jazz guitar-laden excellence of "Rollin' Steady") and Zapp/Roger Troutman ("Case Of The Shakes"). In a word: stunning.

Review: E. Live returns to Star Creature HQ with his third full-length release, 'Soft Approach,' and it's a jazz-funk-infused and boogie-powered blast-off. Following the success of 2020's Boogie For Life and Cloud Vibes from 2022, this new long player marks a triumphant evolution in his solo journey. With a nu-school disco flair and jazzier undertones, E. Live expertly balances accessibility and sophistication to make for a well-crafted trip overall. Drawing inspiration from musical luminaries like Roy Ayers and Patrice Rushen, these tunes promise to captivate fans of danceable rhythms and refined musicality alike. This release solidifies E. Review: Star Creature continues to thrill and inspire with each successive seven-inch single. The label's latest comes from debutants Family of Geniuses, a seven-piece boogie band from Chicago who back heritage influences with brilliant new songs. You'll find a perfect example on the A-side, where "Let's Not Start a Fight" - a sweet, perfectly-pitched boogie club cut that sounds to us like Escort making original electrofunk - sparkles from start to finish. Over on the flipside they doff a cap to the label's roots, offering up a brilliant cover of E Live's "Do Me Like That", the 2015 bomb that helped put Star Creature on the map.

Pleasure For Your Treasure (radio mix) (4:01)
Review: German combo First Touch can rightfully be considered amongst the top tier of 21st century boogie and electrofunk revivalists. Having previously shined on Omega Supreme, Born to Shine and Neon Finger, the Mannheim crew has now transferred to the brilliant Star Creature imprint. A-side "Toe Jammin" is particularly fresh, featuring as it does a killer combination of thickset synth bass, bustling drum machine rhythms, glassy-eyed '80s soul chords, rising horns and one hell of an extended piano solo. Thrown in all manner of synth doodles and you have an effortlessly brilliant cut. They try their hand at more traditional electrofunk fare on the flip, layering soulful vocal samples and fizzing synth solos over a classic P-funk groove. These won't hang around for long, so buy now to guarantee a copy.

The man known for his boompty sounds shows a different side here as he takes on Neal Francis, an artist known for his mad piano jams, killer live sets and funky soul and r&b. In Carter's hands 'BNYLV' becomes a deep and loose house cut with soul-drenched chords and nice noodling bass next to angelic vocal coos. Review: Straight up disco soul from Minneapolis troupe Freakway who - according to legend - are based deep in Tokyo underground disco scene. "Hot Touch" comprises tight musicianship (especially between the bass and drums) with great precision vocals that really shine with articulation and wry humour in a way that's not dissimilar to Cameo. "Ain't Gonna Last" slows the vibe right down with a more soulful boogie touch where full emphasis should be paid to the bass that's fluid and funky enough to make Larry Graham blush. Tight.

Review: David Zylberman is the Ghost, a key member of Egyptian Lover's spaced out synthfunk backing band who now steps out for a hugely awaited new 7" after the label leaked advance copies in November. Plenty of big circuit DJs have already been giving these some serious airplay and for good reason: Zylberman flips a pair of classic tracks into his own breakbeat-tinged, electro-jazz-funk gems awash with new school vibes. First is the timeless 'Expansions' tunes that will take you to the cosmos on waves of warmth. Second is a body-popping version of 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' that will light up the dance floor.

Review: If tactile, colourful and synthesizer-powered boogie revivalism is your thing, you probably already own a clutch of singles on the admirable Star Creature label. It's bad news for your wallet, but you need the label's latest "45" in your life too. 'What About Us' is a label debut from former hip-hop crew member Gillies, who serves up a sparkling, emotive chunk of squelchy synth-soul rich in squeezable bass, memorable melodies, Star Creature's trademark early '80s synth squiggles (LFO trigger action aplenty) and sweet female vocals. Label regular E-Live provides the flipside revision, combining D-Train style bold synth riffs with a chugging, pitched-down Italo-disco style bassline and unfussy drums.

Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. Review: This one has already been doing the rounds in plenty of high profile streams as a while label and it now finally gets a proper release courtesy of Star Creature. Igor Jadranin's 'Heavy In Stero' is a perfect bit of retro future disco mixed with Italo deep house. It breezes through a starry night sky on a nimble baseline with smeared chords and more pixelated keys bringing real light. It's impossible feel good in grown up ways, while 'No Skip The Beat' is a nice textural analogue workout that you might hear on Apron, with its popping cowbells and crystallised chords.

Review: Some scintillating all-star action here, as nu-boogie star and Star Creature regular Andre Esput joins forces with fellow revivalist synth-funk stalwarts Kappekoff and Reggie Got Beats AKA RGB. 'Sugar' is the kind of colourful, bass guitar-sporting, synth-powered electrofunk goodness that would once have featured on legendary label Solar System - all squiggly lead lines, rubbery bass, tight machine drums and soulful lead vocals for the ever on-point Esput. The quality - and authenticity - of the trio's early '80s sound comes through loud and clear on the flipside instrumental version, which also includes added musical motifs and dub style drops. A genuine neo-boogie banger!

Review: We're used to Star Creature offering up authentically synth-heavy nu-boogie gems, but here they change tack with a little help from Chicago's Boogie Munster Crew. "Attack of The Chicago Boogie" sees them gather together some ridiculously rare private press gems originally recorded by Windy City musicians during the boogie and electrofunk era. They first offer up a fresh TJ & Hirsch re-edit of Andrew Kitchen's thrillingly squelchy and spacey "Attack of the Boogie", before TZ goes solo to rearrange J Parker Brown's deeper, warmer and more soulful lo-fi synth boogie treat "Live Lady". Over on the flip, Mister's "I Wanna Thank You" is a glossy, horn-sporting slab of polished boogie brilliance, while Henrietta Brown's "I Want You (Right Now)" is a bustling and up-tempo affair heavily influenced by jazz-funk.

Predictably, their latest 7" should be another essential purchase for synthesizer lovers everywhere. It comes from Love's High, a collaborative project helmed by storied Israeli beat-maker Soul Supreme and vocalist Marlon Penn. It is a long awaited official release of a tune The Daphni (aka Caribou) first dropped in his BBC Essential Mix in early 2020 ahead of the pandemic really making its mark. Review: Since joining Star Creature back in 2016, audio-visual twosome Shiro Schwarz has proved to be one of the label's most reliable and prolific artists. The male/female duo are old hands when it comes to crafting authentic synth-funk and P-funk-influenced '80s soul, so it's no surprise to find that their latest 7" is sublime. On the A-side you'll find "Under The Moonlight", a buzzing, Zapp-influenced number rich in slick vocals, ear-pleasing talkbox passages, D-train synth squiggles and all manner of sun-kissed guitar flourishes. B-side "Power of Love" has a more mid-'80s AM radio feel, with the duo's usual glassy-eyed vocals and colourful synthesizer motifs being joined by dreamy digital synth chords and an all-round loved-up vibe.

Boogie Ghost (4:06)
Review: When it comes to crafting colourful, revivalist synth-funk, few are quite as accomplished as Shiro Schwarz. The keytar-sporting Mexican duo has previously been responsible for a string of killer releases, most notably last year's brilliant mini album, Star Creature. They're at it again on Creature, a jaunty chunk of bubbly synth-boogie where both members take to the mic. Like many of their songs, it sounds like it should be blasting out of car stereos late at night. Flipside "Boogie Ghost" is a slightly more hard-wired affair, whose power derives from a thicket synth bassline and some killer talk box action.

Never Thought I'd Get Ya (Afro Acid remix) (4:32)
Never Thought I'd Get Ya (Frank Situation remix) (5:24)
Review: For their latest must-have release, nu-boogie maestros Star Creature has turned to Stroud-based boogie revivalists Situation. "Never Thought I'd Get You" is not only the West Country producers' latest hook-up with sweet-voiced soul man Andre Espeut, but arguably one of their strongest releases to date. The tasty original version - a sumptuous chunk of '80s groove revivalism full of intricate musical touches - kicks things off, before Dom Thompson re-imagines it as an analogue-rich slab of '80s soul revivalism. Mr Mulatto adds a little hip-hop-soul swing on his ace "Beatamix", the "Afro Acid" version takes the track closer to organic deep house territory, and Frank Situation's EP-closing remix is a snappy, peak-time ready club workout for those that like it fast and weighty.

Put together by Tim Zawada and Kool Hersh, the compilation picks up where the first instalment left off - with a bunch of holy grail private press Chicago boogie tracks that have all been officially licensed and sourced direct from the artists. Review: Star Creature Vibes is the label's first ever compilation and boy is it a good one. Across both sides of wax are unreleased tracks and new mixes by label favourites, all of whom offer up a new school mix of contemporary disco funk complete with spaced out synths, go slow jams and cosmic vibes. The whole thing is an easy to love collection of tracks that work as well on a lazy Sunday as they do a sun-kissed Saturday afternoon terrace. Kutkorners conjuring authentic disco magic with their cut 'The Finest', while Shiro Schwarz's 'Exoplanet Love' is particularly smoochy with its whispery vocals squelchy boogie bass. This is a dazzling collection.

Magic Of The Funk (3:47)
Review: Freshman funk troupe straight out of Chicago, Wings Of Sunshine make their debut with the You Got Me Now 7" for the Star Creature label. The title track sits snugly in the funk crawlspace between Plantlife and Funkadelic, all fly falsettos and serious slap bass. "Magic Of The Funk" jumps in the yacht for some slower '80s boogie fun. Instant summer on wax: with its majestic synths and smouldering tempo, the sound on this is only going to improve on this as the months get warmer. An impressive debut.

Daydreaming (instrumental) (4:03)
Review: XL Middleton's first 45rpm on the mighty Star Creature Universal Vibrations label is a majestic collab with the amazing Saucy Lady. 'Daydreaming' is pure good time music, packed with sunshine and to-die-for boogie baselines that wiggling away beneath jazz-funk chords and funked up drums. It's an irresistible jam as the temps go up, and if for someone reason you want to hear it without the effortlessly cool vocal, you can flip this 7" over for a fine instrumental jam. With debuts as good as this, the label is sure to want more from XL - we certainly do.
