Review: Madvillain is the collaboration of the most dynamic duo from today's hip-hop underground, MF Doom and Madlib. "Madvillainy" has witty, mental lyrics combined with rugged beats fashioned from every possible source material, resulting in a truly unique album pointing the way to hip-hop's future.

Review: "Ruff Draft", originally released in 2003, is a sought-after album that remains the elusive key release in J Dilla's catalogue. This has freewheeling, in-your-face synthesizers, and an uncharacteristically sample-heavy approach that is as banging as it is experimental.

Review: Following his last album for Stone's Throw, and a well received ambient record, John Carroll Kirby's Septet album was recorded live in the studio with a range of talents playing keys, vibes, bass, percussion and drums. The composer and keyboardist leads the charge and approached the album wanting to play "with the chaos of jazz fashion in the 70's/80's, bands like Weather Report and Miles Davis." He sure does that but there is beauty in the madness, with plenty of lush and golden keys dancing above lithe and ad hoc rhythms. A new school classic, for sure.

Review: When it was first released digitally this time last year, John Carroll Kirby's Conflict was promoted as a "balm for a time of crisis". Now finally available on vinyl, the collection's soothing, poignant and melancholic piano pieces feel every bit as essential as they did this time last year. Much of the music was inspired by the composer's meditations on the fallout from war, though there were other perhaps more trivial questions he felt needed answering through music (see 'Who Will Replace Brandon Lee' and his musical interpretation of an imagined visit from boxer Anthony Joshua). The results are uniformly beautiful, with Kirby cannily combining slow, sometimes expansive piano motifs with ghostly ambient chords and occasional deep, warm basslines. If you enjoy the work of Nils Frahm, you'll love this.

Review: John Carroll Kirby has worked with the likes of Solange, Frank Ocean, Sebastian Tellier and many more, but he's equally celebrated as a solo artist who returns to Stones Throw for his fifth LP. This time around, the album has been made in tandem with incredible Canadian artist Yu Su, who lends her touch to the production around Kirby's infectious keys. The album is largely instrumental save for an uplifting guest spot from Laraaji on opening track 'Dawn of New Day', but as with previous Kirby albums he has more than enough to say in the conviction of his playing. Ever chameleonic, his sound on Dance Ancestral is removed from the solo piano ambience of Conflict, but as ever Kirby's deep-rooted musicality soars, buffeted by Yu Su's fantasy confections. If you're in search of something to make you feel good, this record has positive energy for days.

Review: On her second album, Sudan Archives is bringing it all back home. As a reflection on LA and Cincinnati, where she was raised, Natural Brown Prom Queen sees the Stones Throw icon pushing her craft and charisma further into the stratosphere. This time around she's let other people in on the production process, teaming up with MonoNeon, Simon on the Moon, Hi-Tek and Nosaj Thing, and also invited her family in on vocal duties. The sound is as versatile as her vocal style, and it's undoubtedly already a shoe-in for those coveted album of the year lists which start to loom on the horizon around this time of year. This is essential stuff, make no mistake.

Review: It's taken a while, but finally Knxwledge has delivered the follow-up to his "official" debut album, 2015's "Hud Dreems". A concept album of sorts - the tall tale behind it being that the beats were created in 1988 by an infant version of our musical hero after he climbed inside an SP-12 sampler and mastered the machine - the set sees Knxwledge sprint through a beat-tape style assortment of short, sweet and often sublime instrumentals that make use of a variety of period samples. Given his track record, it's an impressive album, regardless whether the beats were genuinely made when he was in "Nike diapers" (as the press release amusingly claims) or not.

The Minimal Wave Tapes: J Rocc Edits Vol 2
Cat: STH 2295. Rel: 20 Aug 12

Coldwave/Synth
Felix Kubin - "Japan Japan" (J Rocc edit)
Ohama - "The Drum" (J Rocc edit)
Mark Lane - "Who's Really Listening" (J Rocc edit)
Deux - "Game & Performance" (J Rocc edit)
Review: J Rocc steps up for the second and final installment of his Minimal Wave Tapes Edits, once again appearing on weighty vinyl and offering solitude for those DJs out there whose attempts to drop the likes of Ohama and Deux are frustrated by the inherent lack of quantized drum programming. J Rocc's edit of Felix Kubin's "Japan Japan" is a case in point, originally featuring on the recent second volume of The Minimal Wave Tapes, the rolling 4x4 electro groove that filled the opening bars soon mutated rhythmically into bastard vocoder pop. J Rocc wisely extends this opening loop before switching into the madness and then smoothing back into that groove. From here, J Rocc adds some extra weight to the titular elements of Ohama's "The Drum", teases out the inner uneasy primal techno workings of "Who's Really Listening?" from Mark Lane and f*cks about with Deux's "Game & Performance" brilliantly.

Review: The ever-prolific John Carroll Kirby is back on Stones Throw barely a minute after releasing no less than two albums last year. Of course, no one is complaining when the quantity is matched with the quality Kirby brings, and Blowout is bursting with the laid back musicality and inherent joy Kirby is so well-loved for. The album was recorded during a recent stay in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, and you can sense the surroundings feeding into the music, from the 5am wake up call from the oropendola birds to the blissful sunsets. This is smooth as silk jazz funk with a mission: to help you enjoy life. Consider this mission accomplished.

Review: Kiefer closes down his trilogy of EPs on Stones Throw with fantastic final offering, Between Days. This one takes on the ideas of transition, of growing old and rising fiends, looking for new purpose as life changes and trying to stay hopeful. It features a host of the beat maker's mates such as Sara Sithi-Amnuai on trumpet, Will Logan on drums and Paul Castelluzzo on guitar, and also includes some great covers of The Cure's 'In Between Days' and Roy Ayers's 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine.'

Review: Is there a more famous nutcase in music than Lee Scratch Perry? The legendary producer is still very much on the musical money, though, no matter how weird he gets in person. This record for Stones Throw finds him working with Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes and Argentinian dubber Ivan Diaz Mathe on a series of heavyweight tunes that are brilliantly psychedelic. The title track is a cosmic stepper then "No Age" is a wandering dub with oodles of trippy effects and stoner leads that make way for some of his textbook vocal musings on "Magik." After immersive closer "No Age" you'll be keen to do it all again.

Review: The best thing about music is the way it continually presents you with people that have been doing their thing for time, and very well indeed, but have somehow managed to do that thing far from your wandering ear. Introducing John Carroll Kirby, just one star in the constellation of Los Angeline music, but one who has worked with the likes of (drum roll, please) Solange, Norah Jones, Frank Ocean, Miley Cyrus, and Bat For Lashes, among others.

In truth, you can probably hear as much of those artists as you can another of his conspirators, Connan Mockasin, here. Cryptozoo is a record out of time, but perhaps not timeless. We wander through strange ambient jazz, elevator hooks, and cut scenes from a forgotten Final Fantasy game. It's the past and present, it's familiar and yet exploratory, and it makes perfect sense as aural accompaniment to a movie about metaverse beasts.

Review: DJ and producer J. Rocc debuts a new trip down memory lane in LP form, reminiscing on his comeup in the LA underground music scene. 'A Wonderful Letter' is quite literally a love letter to the City of Angels, expressing his thanks for the community found there - not to mention the machinations that led to his signing with Stones Throw, as well as various collabs with J Dilla and Madlib.

Review: Stimulator Jones hails from Roanoke, Virginia, a place of beautiful nature and lots of wildlife. That is capture din the music and the artwork of his new album, which is packed with home studio jams. Soul, disco, dub and R&B all infuse this collection of instrumental beat tracks. The artist himself says these are "pure, uncut, straight forward beats - no clever arrangements, no cerebral overindulgence, no cute stuff, no vocals." But that's not to say they are compelling. Some go deep and dirty, some are sweet as honey and others drift by like a lone cloud in a clear blue summer sky. Perfect for lazy afternoons and stoner sessions.

Review: Pearl & The Oysters, made up of duo Juliette Pearl and Joachim Polack, have been described as "Florida's best kept secret," owing to their sweetly unforgettable style of psychedelic indie. With dreamy vocals, catchy melodies, and experimental instrumentation, the duo have been said to channel the influence of classic French composers like Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Legrand into their work, nailing a filmic atmosphere that is otherwise lent to a Mario Kart-esque bedroom pop.

Review: As the lynchpin of The Beat Junkies and a staple part of the Stones Throw legacy, J.Rocc has been diligently digging since his youth in the early 80s. While his long and winding career has taken in ample mixtapes, production stints, breaks collections and more besides, he hasn't released so many of his own standalone beats. That makes A Wonderful Letter a cause for celebration, as Rocc pens a love letter to Los Angeles through a tapestry of tracks which show off his skills as a studio wizard as well as a deck technician. Just listen to lead single 'L.A. Anthem' featuring LMNO and Key Kool and you'll understand all you need to about the angle Rocc is working on this, his second full-length album.

Review: Beatitudes is an album of ten instrumental hip-hop tracks inspired by 20th century gospel recordings. Produced by one J Rocc (known as the acclaimed DJ and turntablist for Madlib's many shows), the album is a departure from the artist's smudgier, beatsmith affairs. Each track is as smooth as a baby's forehead, and/or as pleasing as a wild fig dropped into one's mouth by an attentive servant on a hot Verona day. Gospel samples whirl around like ghosts, haunting each beat, which in turn sound wonkier than an array of unoiled see-saws. The album's cover is an homage to the mysterious cult artist known only as Harvey, known for designing many surrealist-religious gospel album covers from the 1960s onwards.

Review: Kiefer is having a big month: he has just closed down his trilogy of EPs on Stones Throw with fantastic final offering, Between Days, which was inspired by thoughts of growing old and transition from one phase of life to the next. And now he offers up this splendid double 12". It is a masterful mix of pensive piano, jazz chord work and downtempo drums. There are lush, synth laced soundscapes for late night lovers, funk-fuelled, sax-driven jams and then cosmic, starry-eyed mood pieces that encourage your mind to wander. It is another essential release from this fine talent.

Review: Mndsgn is back with a third installment in the Snax Records series which started back in 2019 with the eponymous first album, then took in Rare Pleasures back in June of 2021 and now reverts back to the original title for a trilogy outing. The prolific LA-based musician and producer cuts a little more loose and gets more free on this long player though retains all of the signature elements of his much-loved sound. It is full of rhythmic invention and plenty of bright melodic flair though it also has a whimsical sense of humour across its many bitesize but brilliant tracks.

Review: Last years, Quakers member Katalyst reignited the project via a solo set of dusty hip-hop instrumentals entitled Supa K: Heavy Tremors. It was quietly impressive, but this follow-up - officially a sequel to the project's 2012 debut album, produced by Katalyst and fellow founders Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Beak) and Stuart Matthews - is even better. It sees the British-Australian threesome return to their roots by pairing dusty, sample heavy beats (all rife with musical nods towards jazz, spy-funk, psyche-rock, electro, prog rock-era synth-scapes and oddball movie soundtracks) with superb guest raps from MCs including Jeru The Damaja, Guilty Simpson, Blood Brown, Dionte Boom, Fat Ray and Sampa The Great.
