Review: Sunlightsquare crank up the heat of anticipation for their forthcoming second LP King Yoruba with this double A Side 12" single. The brainchild of London based Italian musician and producer Claudio Passavanti, Sunlightsquare's brand of Afro Cuban music has been lighting up the dance floors since 2010 finding favour with respected selectors such as Gilles Peterson, Louie Vega, Jazzie B, Tony Humphries and Joey Negro. Passavanti opens proceedings with a wonderfully reworked version of the Earth Wind & Fire classic "Fantasy," calling on the vocal talents of London's Kevin Mark Trail and Cuban Lazaro Antonio Rodriguez to augment the exciting brass and skilful percussion. Complementing this is "Afro Boogie Super Hombre" which is vintage Sunlightsquare and was apparently recorded in both Havana and London.

Heart's Desire
Cat: SUN 12001. Rel: 28 Aug 13
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Heart's Desire
  2. Theme De Yoyo
Review: !! REPRESS !! Prolific album man Claudio Passavanti unleashes his first brand new material since last year's long one (his fifth in six years) Britannia Shing-A-Ling. As usual with Mr SSS, it's a wild affair that takes in jazz, soul, Cuban and good old fashioned funk. Lead track "Heart's Desire" swirls completely in minor key, twisting and trumping with a very familiar horn phrase and some deep, sexy captivating lyrics. Think Bugz, but more homely. "Theme De Yoyo", meanwhile is more your hands-down funk alliance with a full-fat horn section, a low-swung bassline and vocals that sound like they're being belted off the Pyramid stage on a balmy Friday night. If you're familiar with RSL's Every Preston Guild you'll be all over this...

Flies To Rio
Cat: SUN 7006. Rel: 26 May 16
  1. Nacao (feat Josue Ferreira) (3:57)
  2. Taj Mahal (feat Josue Ferreira) (3:36)
Review: LA veteran in London, multi-instrumentalist and all-round legend Claudio Passavanti delivers two blisteringly fresh originals. Loaded with Latin charm, instant sunshine soul and honey-coated vocals of Josue Ferreira, both cuts are exquisitely timed for the summer... "Nacao" is a Brazilian funk with broad nylon string flurries beneath Josue's sentimental command. "Taj Mahal", meanwhile, flips the switch for a full-on carnival anthem with lavish timpani strikes and a vocal chant that echoes with musical memories we didn't know we had. Stunning.

Review: UK Latin outfit Sunlightsquare get to grips with Wilson Pickett's 1966 soulful gem "Land Of 1000 Dances" featuring US vocalist Brendan Reilly (one time vocalist of Basement Jaxx). Their version of this poppy feel good anthem comes replete with big brass stabs and upfront backing vocals. On the flip of this dinked 45 you'll find a handy instrumental.

  1. Ochosi (original mix)
  2. Ochosi (Jose Marquez mix)
Review: Following "Hearts Desire", soul weaver Sunlightsquare serves his second slice of fresh material since his 2011 album Britannia Shing-A-Ling. Blessed with a lolloping, sun-kissed afro-jazz groove, it's the ultimate sunset soundtrack driven by a soft, yearning African vocal. For a deeper, tribal experience flip for Jose Marquez's percussion-heavy reversion.

Review: Hot on the Cuban heels of "Nacao" comes another scorching hot Latin fusion from London-based virtuoso Claudio Passavanti. Loaded with an all-star cast comprising master percussionist Giovanni Imparato, Ronnie Scotts resident Rene Alvarez, the dancefloor-minded beat is peppered with Cuban percussion and vocal rhythms and lavish jazzy swings to the keys. Remix-wise Kay Suzuki provides two-for-one; an outstanding Balearic toe-tickler massaged with just the right amount of cosmicity and the naked drum track which is an odyssey in itself. Oye oye.

Review: Having formed in 2004, this London based Latin collective are best known for the single "Amuyada" and their cover of Stevie Wonder’s "Pastime Paradise". They’re much loved by fans of funk, Latin and soul and have had plenty of support along the way from Gilles Peterson among others. This latest record was recorded in Cuba at the famous Radio Rebelde studio and it seems to have given them a whole new lease of life.

From the very start you can hear the inspiration seeping into the tracks. Opening song "La Banda" is a kaleidoscopic explosion of ideas, almost worthy of 50s exotica composer Esquivel for the sheer amount of verve bursting out of all 20 of the players. Title track "Havana Central" settles nicely into a groove, giving ample space for the soloists to show off and also keeping things tight with some sung choruses.

First single "I Believe In Miracles" will be the jewel in the crown though for funk fans. A cover of the rare groove and b-boy classic by The Jackson Sisters, the SLC transform it into an explosive Latin romp that loses none of its sparkle transposed into a different genre. The more jazz structured slower songs, such as "Bebidas Para Ti", again give the musicians ample space to impress on the wide variety of instruments at their disposal. The other immediate go-to track must be their version of Massive Attack's "Teardrop", with a Herb Albert-style trumpet taking the lead melody, and a delicate but riveting backing from the rest of the combo. With such an accessible pathway into this tremendous album, there's really no excuse for not succumbing to its huge charm.

Cat: SUN 7001RED. Rel: 02 Apr 20
  1. I Believe In Miracles (3:56)
  2. I Believe In Miracles (instrumental) (3:58)
Review: Back in 2010 composer and Latin jazz specialist Claudio Passavanti put together a scaled-down ensemble of Latin musicians and percussionists to record a salsa cover version of the Jackson Sisters disco classic "I Believe In Miracles". The seven-inch single was a riproaring success, with jazz and Afro-Latin DJs around the world turning it into a bona fide scene anthem. Happily, Passavanti has decided to reissue it on red vinyl to celebrate the track's tenth birthday. It's a superb cover all told and, somewhat surprisingly, "I Believe In Miracles" actually works really well as a Salsa record. Full of fiery horns, sing-along, Boogaloo style vocals and infectious percussion, we actually prefer it to the over-played Jackson Sisters take. Recommended!
