If I Was To
Hazed
Review: Ably assisted by the evergreen Ninjatune, new UK imprint Technicolour have quietly become one of the more interesting labels to surface in the past 12 months jettisoning hard to pigeon hole material from Micachu keyboardist Raisa K, female post dubstepper Kid A and now BRTSH KNIGHTS. If I Was To represents the first official release from the South London collective and they come across like Disclosure with a much needed injection of 'ardcore rudeness. The title track in particular swings with a vicious slickness that's immediately gratifying, whilst the "reciprocate" vocal hook adds that much needed extra edge of addiction. "Hazed" meanwhile is a dark, smokey slice of R&B powered by reverse snares that feel influenced by Jam City's piston like rhythmics.

Review: The tracks on this EP from DJ Boring were made for his acclaimed live show, and have been getting fans in a spin ever since. Opener "Like Water" is lithe house music with a cosmic feel that will have you afloat in no time then "Another Day" get more ravey on thumping drums and busy synths. The lush, serene deep house of "Stockholm Syndrome" might be a highlight for us, then "Seems Like Yesterday" closes out in breezy, groovy fashion. The fantastic sleeve has been designed by New York based artist Amir Jahanbin, who was also responsible for the visuals at the live show, making this an even more essential purchase.

Review: Emma Kirby's ascendance was assured with the release of her Euphoric Melodies EP last year. Released on Technicolour, it followed up on the promise of the Every Body Is Welcome EP for Femme Culture which preceded it. Now she's following up with her third release as Elkka, Harmonic Frequencies. The EP was preceded by the title track last September, which points to a continuation of her refined sound. Fluttering melodies and rave-ready dynamics bounce off each other with abandon, exuding positivity every step of the way. There's an expansive spirit to the EP as Kirby continues developing her sound, not to mention a truckload of good vibes to see us into the Spring in style.

The Fourth Dimension
Start Time
Review: Overseen by London producer PhOtOmachine (with some assistance from Ninja Tune) the Technicolour label has been on sublime form of late, with some rare Kutmah material up their with this year's best 12" releases. This latest release is quite the statement too, with mathematics boss Jamal Moss on board for two heavy duty cuts presented on heavyweight wax. It's timed well too, with Planet Mu having just issued a Hieroglyphic Being primer drawing from a decades worth of material. Fans of Hieroglyphic Being old and new will find much to appreciate in The Fourth Dimensions Of A Nubian Mystic, with the glistening 11 minute cosmos of "Fourth Dimension" complemented well by the jack hammer B Side "Start Time."

The Doctrines Of Swedenborg (7:46)
Calling The Loas (4:55)
Dimensions Of Frequency & Vibrations (8:06)
Ashrams (4:19)
Review: Last year, Jamal Moss in conjunction with percussionist and producer Sarathy Korwar (Ninja Tune/The Steve Reid Foundation) and the highly respected British saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings recorded a live and improvised session at the iconic Lightship95 studio, moored at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London. Two and a half hours of music was recorded across two sessions, with 90 minutes streamed live via NTS Radio. Technicolour now present a 12" EP comprising of four edits from these sessions titled 'Association For Research & Enlightenment Project'. The deep analogue tribalism of "The Doctrines Of Swedenborg" is truly magical and is geared for some real tunnelling effects. The lush ambience of "Dimensions Of Frequency & Vibrations" on the flip was a highlight too, awash in celestial synths and evocative saxophone solos, accompanied by Korwar's drumming reaching near tribal moments.

Review: Released with some able assistance from Ninja Tune, Kid A is the latest hot prospect to join the dreamy, fuzzy soul collective like Vondelpark, The Weeknd, Raffertie et al. Washed-out and woozy, Kid A's mourns cut through each mix with clarity and emotion. Fancy more 4/4 'oomph'? Flip for Eliphino's deep house rub. Fancy more tripped out emphasis on the beat structure? Check Dolor's ambient-meets-fractured space soul rub.

Review: "Fresia Magdalena is about activism" says Berlin based Peruvian Sofia Kourtesis. It comes after a breakout 2020 that saw her get props as far and wide as The Observer and Mixmag as well as playing in NME's Top 100 list. She builds on that success with another EP that marks a big step up and features her singing properly on her own music for the first time. The sound sources here owe a lot to Peru, with jingling bells and rumbling bass, rich melodies and also explicit field recordings collected from around the city of Lima. The grooves are rooted in house but explore the every edges of the genre in personal and absorbing ways.

Explora (Slave) (10:13)

Shpel (11:24)
Review: Man of the moment Florian Kupfer is back, so look out! After highly lauded releases on L.I.E.S. and WT Records, Kupfer aligns with Fotomachine's prospering Technicolour label and delivers four cuts that should be filed under 'all killer, no filler'. First up "Explora (Slave)" gets all up in your face with its retro techno stomp but the chugging minimalist epic that is "Headpiece" is grinding, beatless affair. On the flip we have "Brute Force" which trances you out with its sinister analogue synth arpeggio; so simple but utterly effective. Finally there's "Schpel" another experimental and atmospheric cut that is haunting as much as it is riveting. Tip!

Elle (5:38)
Erika (8:14)
Being Me (6:41)
Unfinished (6:18)
Review: The associations with LIES will always be there thanks to his breakout helium house burner "Feelin" back in 2013, but Florian Kupfer hasn't been afraid to showcase his DJ-friendly wares on other labels either. Dean Bryce's Technicolour division of Ninja Tune first asked for a Kup of Flo last year with the pleasantly diverse Explora 12" and the German artist returns for a second record on the label in the shape of Unfinished which has already got the Hessle Audio Rinse show seal of approval. Kupfer is on smouldering form throughout, bringing a sense of melodic incandescence to opening cut, "Elle," whilst "Erika" could easily be mistaken for a Terekke production. "Being Me" is blown out and boomy and totally fresh, whilst the title track sees Kupfer end proceedings on some sweeping ambient rife with spectral field recordings.

Review: Respected artist, selector and occasional record maker, Kutmah steps up to the PhOtOmachine helmed Technicolour with his most expansive collection of originals to date. Much of the EP taps into the modulating, undulating synthetic sounds of the 80s for inspiration (while wholly reinterpreting those roots in his own language) but departures are made into unique fields as tracks like "Coprolalia" fuses the funk of Parliament and house Moodymann and sends it deep under water and "Amargossa" is a one way boom-bap ticket to the Brainfeeder dream factory. As with anything Kutmah does, this is genuinely unique and requires some serious attention.

Review: If you were left a bit disconsolate at the lack of music released by Danny Wolfers in the aftermath of his Crystal Cult 2080 LP last year, fear not he was clearly spending the time in his studio weaving synthetic magic for all manner of 2015 releases. That and editing an e-zine, directing and starring in a bizarre online TV show with Willie Burns and slipping out free synth patches. Anyway Anaconda Flow is the third Legowelt 12" in as many months and is facilitated via Technicolour, Fotomachine's increasingly influential label. It's all very Legowelt in both sound and titles (our pick is "Evaporate With Me 2 Infinity") and we can always do with more music from the mind of Danny Wolfers in our lives!!

Goodbye (6:34)
Review: Following up great releases by Levantis and Florian Kupfer, Ninja Tune sublabel Technicolour brings the goods again in the form of UK producer NY AK. He teams up with ESP Institute's Ian Blevins for a smooth deep house groove on "Xager". It's dusty and emotive, we're loving that classic bleep bassline and hypnotising analogue pads. He then teams up with Mark Hand and Misumami on "Shadow" a nice take on the classic midwest deep house sound with some truly gorgeous vocals. It's the B side which really shines though; there's "Dollar" which gets properly raw like an old Sound Signature record; this is the real proper deep stuff! Finally "Goodbye" ends things on a more uptempo vibe, but still in a very emotive and melancholic fashion.

Oh Fer Sure (6:00)
Review: Having spent the last few years establishing himself as one of the world's most consistent makers of melodious, head-in-the-clouds deep house and blissful electronica, Project Pablo has secured a deal with Ninja Tune offshoot Technocolour. His first outing for the imprint is as colourful, hazy and tuneful as you'd expect, with glistening opener "Is It Dry?" setting the tone. The Montreal-based producer breaks up the beats a little on the cheeky but dreamy analogue funk of "No Sweat", before dropping a fistful of happy pills on the bustling, up-tempo dream house revivalism of "You Know". Finally, he explores his long-held love of breakbeat-driven tracks on the yearning but jaunty brilliance of closer "Oh Fer Sure".

Review: Known to many as the keyboardist with the vastly under rated Micachu And The Shapes, Raisa K embarks on her first solo mission on new label Technicolour. Technically this an EP - a lovely hand numbered one at that - but with such a distinctive consistency of unique, swampy, delirious sounds, "Feeder" rolls with much more of a mini album flavour, making it all the more delectable. Sweaty and confusing, sweet but bitterly sour, imagine Flying Lotus remixing the collective nightmares of Tom Tom Club and Hot Chip and you're kind of there....

Review: Austrian-born Salute has absolutely mastered the art of crafting simple, effective, emotional house bangers. His perfect loops seem utterly off the cuff and made in a second, but they never fail to really get you where it matters. After several outings on various labels, he now steps up to the revered Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolur with his latest slab of sublime house gold. Across four firing cuts he once again locks you in and swells your heart with his irresistibly uptempo and dusty drums and meticulously crafted synths, all embellished with perfect samples. 'Feels Like My Hands Are On Fire' is the winner here on another fine EP.

Watermelon Woman (Francis Inferno Orchestra Augur Sacrifice dub) (5:36)
Review: If you enjoyed Yu Su's brilliant EP on Second Circle earlier in the year - and, let's face it, who didn't? - there's a rather high chance that you'll enjoy her first outing on Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolour. "Watermelon Woman" is a superb chunk of bass-heavy house music positive - an inventive and hugely enjoyable fusion of unfussy drum machine rhythms, sampled tribal drums, toasty bass, dubbed-out effects, stargazing electronics, fluttering flutes and jazzy motifs that have just the right amount of breezy Latin flavour. The original version comes backed with a hazy and laidback Dub rework and a boisterous, off-kilter remix by Francis Inferno Orchestra that layers rubbery sounds and heady vocal samples above a skewed tribal house beat.
