Review: Emma Burgess-Olsen's big break came when she released her first Umfang cassette on 1080p back in 2015. Praise from critics was fulsome, and now the Brooklyn-based producer finds herself releasing the similarly impressive Symbolic Use of Light on Ninja Tune offshoot Technicolour. Composed in spontaneous live takes using a stripped-back range of analogue synths and drum machines, it's an album that revels in its own atmospheric simplicity. Check, for example, the weighty techno kick-drums and bubbly melodic motifs of "Where is She" and the distant church organs and minimalist rhythm track of "Weight"; both are far more evocative and emotion-rich than their sparse musical elements would suggest. It's a formula that Burgess-Olsen works to throughout, creating ghostly and mind-altering club music to soothe and savage the consciousness.
