Review: Kolony Gorky is back with a third EP in less than a year that once again offers some stylish and artful rhythmic interpretations. DDrhode is behind this one in collaboration with Sohrab and it opens with the airy percussive pattern and suspensory loops of deep and deft jam 'Ghoroob' (Kryptic Rhythm) which becomes dusty downbeat and late-night jaunt when served up as the Buggin Beat. 'Azadi' has the feel of a 60s spy thriller with its mysterious leads and 'Distant Sun'shuts down with some zoned out and loved-up deep house romance. Another hard-to-define but easy-to-love EP from the already vital Kolony Gorky.

Review: The introduction to Toy Machine's seminal 1996 skate video Welcome To Hell, with its pulsing overlay of the Stars and Stripes on top footage of police officers, businessmen, and fast food service workers, would appear to paint hell as the mirage of American exceptionalism. A young Joseph Shabason felt that impact. That invigorating, improvisational, full-body experience of skateboarding is one that Shabason likens to jazz, where a shared language exists between the wheels and woodwinds. Reflecting on this relationship and the Toy Machine classic would ultimately lead Shabason to wonder: what does hell sound like? The answer was this concept album, which makes for a remarkably casual vision of hell, rerouting the energy generated by hellfire into a kind of inextinguishable world of calm, made up of wonky, hard-limited and overdriven beats ('Ed Templeton') and low-end, blossoming soundscapes ('Friends', 'Welcome To Hell'). A jazz masterpiece dedicated to reevaluating what it means to be "damned".
