Review: It's almost unfathomable more people haven't heard of Beau. Without question one to the finest living (recording) musicians on the face of the planet, the guitar master has been putting albums out since (drum roll) 1969, with his most recent, The Methadone of Our Time, arriving in 2021. The Leeds-born folk and folktronica legend's work rate is so high, in fact, that he regularly delivers more than one LP in a year, with 2013 among the bumper calendars in which he managed to bestow no less than six full-length-ers on fans.

Beau takes us right back to where it all began. Well, almost. Recorded in 1969, and hitting shelves just after his debut 1917 Revolution, it has aged fantastically well, much like the artist himself. A spellbinding showcase of his twelve-string guitar playing, it may have been very much of its time, but this is one few could argue fails on the timelessness test.

Review: When is an album not an album? How about when it's the second outing from Catapilla, a band that promised plenty in the formative years of English progressive rock (circa 1971), but wound up delivering just two record before seemingly disappearing into the ether from which their music was born. Comprising just four tracks, even with two songs running upwards of 12 minutes this collection falls short of the standard 80-minute LP we're used to. But then there's nothing standard about the band in general. Otherworldly, epic, unbound by rules or expectations and always keen to see what happens with just that little bit extra on the break, refrain or weaving harmony, this is exactly the sort of thing we've been taught not to expect in 2020, but exactly the sort of thing you should have been looking for.

Review: Trading Places reissues a rare live recording of the legendary jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, captured in Ankara in 1969. Accompanied by Turkish musicians Irfan Sumer, Selcuk Sun and Okay Temiz, Cherry explores his original compositions and adaptations of local folk songs, as well as tunes by Ornette Coleman and Pharoah Sanders. A fascinating fusion of tradition and experimentation, this album is a treasure for jazz lovers, capturing a moment of transnational future-dreaming. Cherry laid down its original recording in the Turkish-US Embassy, after spending months learning the ways of traditional Turkish folk music - 'the mother' - with saxophonist Bernt Rosengren.

Funk
Let's Take It To The Stage (5:20)
Cosmic Slop (7:36)
Atomic Dog (8:30)
Funkentelechy (Where'd You Get That Funk From) (20:32)
Review: If you've ever had the privilege to witness George Clinton & The P Funk Allstars live, you know they bring it, each and every time. After all, the magic of Parliament and Funkadelic's imperious catalogue lies in that in-the-room, jammed out madness where anything could happen at any moment, which translates to the stage so beautifully. This collection pulls together some of the choicest live cuts from recent times, as stone-cold classics like 'Let's Take It To The Stage' and 'Cosmic Slop' collide with 'Atomic Dog' and 'Funkentelechy'. Of course the tracks take on whole new dimensions in the live setting, stretched out and freaked up even more than in their original form, making this a must-grab for any P funk devotee.

Review: Made up of five former members of English mod band The Action, Mighty Baby - Alan King, Martin Stone, Ian Whiteman, et al. - later went on to explore the festival circuit a hell of a lot more, in the process fleshing out their proggier bent, far higher on the pH scale than releases under the former name. In the wake of several members' introduction to Sufism, the band took a spiritual turn, and this rare recording from Glastonbury 1971 is a delicious highlight of that era, in turn an offshoot of the compilation album of the same name. Now reissued after being sifted from an original stash of tapes, Trading Places have successfully reignited the memory of this hitherto unsung project.

Looking For Somebody (7:10)
Review: Gary Moore is the Irish guitarist best known for his prior involvement with Thin Lizzy, but the 1995 album Blues For Greeny netted comparatively little recognition for him. Needless to say, that's not what makes a great album, and this one's the opposite of a fame-seeking project anyway - amounting to a tribute album to his musical hero, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. All the tracks here adapt Green's originally written songs with finger-noodly flair, with the added help of Kinks bassist Andy Pyle to boot.

Review: Of Filipino descent, the expressive keyboardist, vocalist, and composer Flip Nuñez enjoyed a varied career in jazz. After backing Bev Kelly, Jon Hendricks, and others in the 1960s, Nuñez impacted in the Latin jazz-rock act Azteca. The marvellous My Own Time And Space, his only solo album, showcases his versatility; the Latin cadences of Willie Colon and former Santana bassist Tom Rutley, the keen jazz phrasings of guitarist Michael Howell, and drummer Vince Lateano, all make for a superb backing for Nuñez’s piano and synth flourishes, bolstered by his emotive voice. A lost classic, and one that sounds better with every spin, now reissued via Trading Places.
