Review: Ionu? Arapu is better known simply by his surname. He is at the heart of the minimal scene from his base in Romania and over a decade after his debut he keeps on pushing at the boundaries of the sound. This solid two tracks marks his first outing of the year on homeland label UVAR. It firstly offers up the 11 minute opus that is 'Mode,' a warm and bubbly groove that never stops moving, with underlapping drums, trippy motifs up top and rugged synth textures adding the flesh. The flip side is much more playful, with funk-fuelled drum loops and more feel good piano chords.

Review: With a production history that stretches back to the start of the decade, Barac is arguably one of the better-known Romanian minimal and tech-house producers. His fame - if you can call it that - has been built on consistency. Put simply, his releases are always rock solid. This EP on UVAR is no different. He begins with the metronomic percussive pulse and skewed late night wonkiness of "Song Written For Reny", before injecting a little tech-funk into proceedings via the similarly bass-heavy "Maintain Eye Contact". Over on the B-side, closer "Toponimul" - a looser and more humid excursion rich in undulating hand percussion hits, creepy chords and feverish electronics - is particularly impressive and could well be the EP's standout moment.

Review: German producer Daniel Broesecke first appeared on our radar a few years back with the Isacc Hayes sampling 'Get Some More' in collaboration with Silat Beksi on his Vivus imprint that he runs with Tobi More. Broesecke's latest comes courtesy of Sepp and Nu Zau's ever reliable UVAR imprint and features the rolling, ethereal, bass-driven tech house journey that is 'Bless' backed by a moody and abstract remix by Epau. Over on the flip, it's back to Sunwaves in the main tent at peak time on 'Find Your Soul' while 'Isha' equally nails that 'Rominimal" vibe just nicely.

Review: Vlad Caia has real cult status as an underground mainstay. He operates in a world where minimal, tech house and ambient sound designs all happily merge into one fresh new sound. He manages to make skeletal tracks that are sparse and delicate, yet also hugely compelling and impactful on the dance floor. This new one for UVAR is another car in point. It opens with 'Seeker,' which is all hurried drum loops and leggy bass, then 'Dicton' casts off on a slippery groove to the farthest regions of space. 'Rubicon' is the astral party amongst the stars you might find once you reach your destination - all percolating pads and sc-fi designs that melt the mind.

Review: UVAR's first LTD compilation, which appeared in the spring of 2017, was something of a runaway success, so the Romanian label has decided to do it all over again. Like its predecessor, this second serving is jam-packed with club-ready tech-house treats, from the deep space electronics, sampled children's voices and undulating drums of CSR and Argetic Brito's "Abadia" and rolling, ever-building dreaminess of Ada Kaleh's "Aum Trai Si Aum Vedea", to the low-slung, acid-flecked trip that is Mierea Dor's "Hummingbird" and deep space throb of Ikuto's "Alarcity". There's perhaps a little more of a sci-fi feel to this one, as if most of the producers have been gorging on old Motor City techno records, but the beats remain tactile and tech-house focused.

Review: The steady flurry of slim-line goodness from Nu Zau continues unabated with this latest offering on UVAR, which finds the producer embracing dubby processing in amongst the densely packed rhythmic trysts of his tracks. "Fortuit" is a wistful, dreamlike workout that maximizes on elegant sweeps of pad and gurgling found sound decoration for a truly hypnotic end result. On the flipside, "Perpetuum" has a more forthright groove to latch onto, coming over all techy without selling short the hypnotic atmosphere that Nu Zau has made his own. Whatever the case, both cuts will serve any subterranean spinners well in weaving a little spirituality into a set.

Review: Proof if ever it were needed that Romania is a hotbed of talent in the field of contemporary minimal techno, this new label Uvar showcases two promising talents with a strong catalogue behind them already. Nu Zau in particular has already scored releases on Archipel and Fear Of Flying, whilst Sepp has broken through this year for the likes of Anjdromeda. "Aprod De Rug" finds Nu Zau getting lost in a detailed tapestry of percussion that would get any fan of Ricardo Villalobos in a lather, never letting up on the cyclical pistons of found sounds that shape the groove. Sepp gets a touch housier with his "Sensul Epic", letting eerie strings fill in the space left by the sparse beat with an underlying tribal tone adding a healthy amount of tension.

Review: Sepp and Nu Zau's esteemed UVAR imprint now present the mysterious debut talent Ragrip, although we later found out they're a duo comprised of local hero Lumieux (Why So Series/Subtil) and Paul Agripa who was in the Sahau project with local don Dan Andrei. Starting off on the A side with the 11 minute long epic "Alkyds" which is a deeply acidic and tribalistic microhouse journey you'll never forget. On the flip are some tripper and reduced shenanigans to get weird at the afterhours like on the wicked "Echoppe" and then "Meglip" which is a well crafted and ethereal groove that rolls along in hypnotic fashion much like the work of local hero Cristi Cons.

Review: Four new eco-tech house tunes from mega-producer Traumer, setting his sights on realms much greener and airier for the now well-stocked label UVAR. 'Cercle' is a clean, stab-pulsing tune evoking the feeling of floating high above a futuristic, terraformed eco-paradise, with solar panels and nuclear fusion nodes aplenty. 'Committed' delves into funkier FM territory, while 'Contropa' reveals a penchant for some very exciting vocal processing, which sounds rather like the manifesting and dematerialising of ghosts between the beats. This is a breathable and trancey tech house EP, not worth missing.

Review: Rominimal master Sorin Rastoaca aka Vid is back with another exceptional outing, this time for Sepp and Nu Zau's Uvar imprint. Rastoaca's truly idiosyncratic sound is evident right from the first bar of the Machine EP, best heard on the paranoid microhouse groove of 'Not A Lullaby' which is the sort of weirdo jam Rhadoo would play on a Monday morning. 'Clipe' is much more upbeat; a rolling and hypnotic tech house groove in the typical Romanian style. On the flip, he delves into twisted territory on the foreboding title track, before delivering another heady and meditative tool in the form of 'Heart'.

Review: Sepp and Nu Zau's UVAR label is a hotbed of slick minimal sounds and this year has been a busy one that has seen them put out four new EPs, each as good as the last. For the fifth missive, they enlist various label friends to come through and in return are rewarded with another essential collection of late-night sounds. Xandru's cut is led by a nice melodic bassline and swirling sci-fi pads while Tulbure serves up some brilliantly frictionless drums. Flip it over for more spaced out, future-facing minimal tech grooves that will appeal to the heads.
