When We See One EP (180 gram vinyl double 12")
Cat: UVAR 010. Rel: 11 Jul 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Song Written For Reny (12:29)
  2. Mantain Eye Contact (14:22)
  3. Cantarea Celor Trei Tineri (11:43)
  4. Toponimul (11:47)
Review: With a production history that stretches back to the start of the decade, Barac is arguably one of the better-known Romanian minimal and tech-house producers. His fame - if you can call it that - has been built on consistency. Put simply, his releases are always rock solid. This EP on UVAR is no different. He begins with the metronomic percussive pulse and skewed late night wonkiness of "Song Written For Reny", before injecting a little tech-funk into proceedings via the similarly bass-heavy "Maintain Eye Contact". Over on the B-side, closer "Toponimul" - a looser and more humid excursion rich in undulating hand percussion hits, creepy chords and feverish electronics - is particularly impressive and could well be the EP's standout moment.

UVARLTD 002 (double 12")
Cat: UVARLTD 002. Rel: 21 Nov 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. CSR & Argenis Brito - "Abadia" (7:56)
  2. Vlad Arapasu - "Mistic Pisc" (8:06)
  3. Ada Kaleh - "Aum Trai Si Aum Vedea" (7:57)
  4. Mariin - "Lit Mitdream" (7:58)
  5. Mierea Dor - "Hummingbird" (8:07)
  6. Brind - "Chitar Alaparis" (8:10)
  7. Ikuto - "Alacrity" (8:04)
  8. Faster - "Back Room" (7:47)
Review: UVAR's first LTD compilation, which appeared in the spring of 2017, was something of a runaway success, so the Romanian label has decided to do it all over again. Like its predecessor, this second serving is jam-packed with club-ready tech-house treats, from the deep space electronics, sampled children's voices and undulating drums of CSR and Argetic Brito's "Abadia" and rolling, ever-building dreaminess of Ada Kaleh's "Aum Trai Si Aum Vedea", to the low-slung, acid-flecked trip that is Mierea Dor's "Hummingbird" and deep space throb of Ikuto's "Alarcity". There's perhaps a little more of a sci-fi feel to this one, as if most of the producers have been gorging on old Motor City techno records, but the beats remain tactile and tech-house focused.

Fortuit EP (12")
Cat: UVAR 003. Rel: 19 Aug 14
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Fortuit
  2. Perpetuum
Review: The steady flurry of slim-line goodness from Nu Zau continues unabated with this latest offering on UVAR, which finds the producer embracing dubby processing in amongst the densely packed rhythmic trysts of his tracks. "Fortuit" is a wistful, dreamlike workout that maximizes on elegant sweeps of pad and gurgling found sound decoration for a truly hypnotic end result. On the flipside, "Perpetuum" has a more forthright groove to latch onto, coming over all techy without selling short the hypnotic atmosphere that Nu Zau has made his own. Whatever the case, both cuts will serve any subterranean spinners well in weaving a little spirituality into a set.

La Rascruce (heavyweight vinyl 2xLP)
Cat: UVAR 009. Rel: 10 Apr 18
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Lolita (9:21)
  2. Take Me Back (7:57)
  3. Ma Gandesc La (8:02)
  4. Let It Flow (10:15)
  5. Pana De Curent (8:05)
  6. Incloido (7:59)
Review: When naming some of the top guns of Romania's vibrant minimal techno scene, it's fairly certain that Stefan Gabiel's name would be one of the first mentioned. The talented producer's singular sound has undoubtedly influenced the scene's sonic aesthetic; otherworldly, esoteric grooves rich with hypnotic polyrhythms that became his trademark. In the last couple of year's he's sought to reinvent his sound and that transition period has finally paid off, as heard on his new LP for Sepp's UVAR imprint - his third thus far. Nu Zau's refined brand of reductionist mini funk will captivate you from start to finish on La Rascruce. There are rolling ethereal grooves for the main room like on "Lolita", bleepy and bumpy alien grooves as heard on "Ma Gandesc La" and like many in the scene at present he flirts with electro - to interesting effect like on the 10 minute epic "Let It Flow". A return to form from one of the modern masters of minimalism

  1. Aprod De Rug
  2. Sensul Epic
Review: Proof if ever it were needed that Romania is a hotbed of talent in the field of contemporary minimal techno, this new label Uvar showcases two promising talents with a strong catalogue behind them already. Nu Zau in particular has already scored releases on Archipel and Fear Of Flying, whilst Sepp has broken through this year for the likes of Anjdromeda. "Aprod De Rug" finds Nu Zau getting lost in a detailed tapestry of percussion that would get any fan of Ricardo Villalobos in a lather, never letting up on the cyclical pistons of found sounds that shape the groove. Sepp gets a touch housier with his "Sensul Epic", letting eerie strings fill in the space left by the sparse beat with an underlying tribal tone adding a healthy amount of tension.

Alla Prima (12")
Cat: UVAR 008. Rel: 14 Jun 17
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Alkyds (11:16)
  2. Echoppe (8:02)
  3. Megilp (6:37)
Review: Sepp and Nu Zau's esteemed UVAR imprint now present the mysterious debut talent Ragrip, although we later found out they're a duo comprised of local hero Lumieux (Why So Series/Subtil) and Paul Agripa who was in the Sahau project with local don Dan Andrei. Starting off on the A side with the 11 minute long epic "Alkyds" which is a deeply acidic and tribalistic microhouse journey you'll never forget. On the flip are some tripper and reduced shenanigans to get weird at the afterhours like on the wicked "Echoppe" and then "Meglip" which is a well crafted and ethereal groove that rolls along in hypnotic fashion much like the work of local hero Cristi Cons.

  6. Cosmjn - "Lite" (8:07)
  7. Idana - "Orquideas" (7:37)
  8. Rojid - "Dulcet" (7:57)
Review: If you're on the look out for an expansive collection of club-ready Romanian tech-house tracks, this double vinyl offering from fast-rising imprint UVAR could be just the ticket. It features cuts from both label stalwarts and newcomers, with enough subtle variety to suggest that it may stay in your record box for a while. Highlights include Anderi Kharitonov's "Better Late", a bass-heavy chunk of '80s electro/tech-house fusion, the rolling rhythms and intoxicating electronics of Sepp's "Rasbel De Cabinet", and the dub techno influenced late night hustle of scene starlet Cosmjn's "Lite". If we had to pick a favourite, though, it would be Idana's "Orquideas", which offers a near perfect balance between the rhythm conventions of minimalist tech-house, and the melodic fluidity of the greatest deep house.
