Review: For their latest must-check full length, Swiss ambient and jazz enthusiasts WRWTFWW have offered up a timely reissue of Satoshi Ashikawa's previously Japan-only 1982 album "Still Way". In some quarters it's considered a triumph of Japanese minimalism - an ambient set that was equally as inspired by Erik Satie as Brian Eno. The sounds are sparse, atmospheric and alluring, with simple harp, vibraphone, piano and flute motifs taking it in turns to rise and fall across the soundspace. It's intricate, soft-focus and hugely poignant, evoking memories of similarly lauded sets by Ashikawa's countrymen Hiroshi Yoshimura and Midori Takada. In other words, it's sublime.

Review: Back in the mid 1980s, Jun Fukamachi decided to establish his own label, Nicole. It didn't last very long. In fact, the imprint only ever put out one record: a promo-only collection of untitled instrumentals called '86 Spring & Summer Collection: Instrumental Images. Here, that hard-to-find set gets reissued on CD for the very first time. Heavily influenced by mid-1980s film and TV soundtracks, contemporaneous new age ambient and expressive experimental jazz, the synthesizer and drum machine heavy collection sounds like it was designed to showcase Fukamachi's library music credentials. Crucially, though, it contains some superb, life-affirming compositions that should thrill those who have been enjoying the previous reissues of both WRWTFWW and Holland's Music From Memory.

Review: For their latest well-judged reissue, the Swiss diggers behind WRWTFWW Records have turned their attention to the vast catalogue of French library music composer Dominique Guiot. "L'Univers De La Mer" first surfaced in 1979 and is widely regarded as the musician's finest body of work. Musically, it's pleasingly out-there and intoxicating, with Guiot speeding through short-but-sweet tracks that variously touch on krautrock, early electronic music, Berlin School ambient, Tangerine Dream style synthesizer soundscapes, art rock, bizarre updates of old "modal" style Tudor numbers and the kind of spiraling electronic compositions that would make Jean-Michel Jarre blush.

Review: Having previously reissued Mkwaju Ensemble's inspired 1981 debut "Ki-Motion", WRWTFWW now turns its attention to their equally impressive follow-up from the same year, "Mkwaju". Beginning with a breezy chunk of Marimba-driven four-to-the-floor bliss, the album sees the Japanese trio - whose members included legendary percussionist and ambient artist Midori Takada - shuffle between hypnotic, Steve Reich-influenced minimalism ("Shak Shak"), melodious fusions of new age electronica and modern American classical ("Tira-Rin"), and glacial ambient soundscapes ("Pulse In The Mind"). Best of all, though, is "Flash-Back", a dense and intoxicating percussion workout that stretches out over 13 mind-bending minutes.

Review: Having previously served up new editions of a number of Midori Takada's solo albums, Swiss reissue specialists WRWTFWW have now turned their attention to her earlier work as part of the Mkwaju Ensemble. Ki-Motion originally appeared on legendary Japanese imprint Better Days way back in 1981, and saw the trio lay down a range of wonderfully breezy, melodious and life-affirming tracks that joined the dots between Glass and Reich style American minimalism, Berlin school ambient, Japanese new age bliss and gentle, proto-type electronica. It's perhaps not as rare or sought-after as some Takada-related releases, but it's still a delightful album: a melodious and sun-kissed affair that sparkles just as much as her sublime solo works.

Review: Second time around for "Lady Maid", a sought after set of minimalist new wave experiments and eccentric electronic collages that was initially released in 1981 on Agi Yuzuru's DIY label Vanity Records. The album was the work of a trio Japanese DIY musicians who were apparently obsessed by speak-and-spell vocals - check the clonking, Kraftwerk-inspired weirdness of "You Are Busy, I am Easy" and smooth, hypnotic "MUSIC" - bubbly drum machine rhythms (the trippy "KE-300") and the kind of abstract weird-outs that recall the halcyon days of Music Concrete. The album's greatest calling card is epic flipside "Fragment", a near 20-minute minimalist synthesizer soundscape that's little less than stunning.

Review: Swiss label WRWTFWW has scored something of a coup here, securing the rights to release two near mythical film soundtracks by legendary experimentalist composer and music concrete artist Bernard Parmegiani. The soundtracks themselves - together on one CD after recently appearing on separate vinyl albums in very limited quantities - were originally composed for a pair of experimental films (1972's "Les Soleils de L'Ike de Paque" and 1965's "La Brulure de Mille Soleils") whose hallucinatory approach to cinematography offered Parmegiani a chance to let his imagination run wild. The results are predictably out-there and inspired, sitting somewhere between the Radiophonic Workshop, Stockhausen and the cutting-edge pioneering electronica of American composer Morton Subotnick.

Review: Conceptually derived from the work of Japanese minimalist composer Satoshi Ashikawa, Dublin-based composer Gareth Quinn Redmond has created an album of environmental music which he hopes will engage, enrich and reflect the listener's surroundings. This is a companion album to Ashikawa's 1982 LP Still Way, which was originally released as part of the wave notation series which also included Hiroshi Yoshimura's seminal Music For Nine Postcards. The album takes Ashikawa's meditative sound designs to more dramatic and lyrical landscapes, gracefully instilling his personal touch into the master's melodic patterns to present six pieces which blend and reflect the modern listener's ever changing environment.

Review: Rare & Unreleased 1971-1998 follows WRWTFWW's reissue of two Bruno Spoerri albums in 2017, such as Voice Of Taurus and The Sound Of The UFOs. Always the adventurer, Spoerri records a pneumatic drill for the irresistible electronic bossa of "Konzert Fur SIG-Pressluftwerkzeuge", mixes train sounds and the EMS Synthi-100 for the joyful lo-fi funk of "Rollin'", lets overheating synthesizers take a life of their own to create the sci-fi ambient of "Waves of Montreux", and works with bees, pigs and various birds for the environmental music bliss of "Rhythm'n Bees" and "Birds Of Cochin".

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist and theater performer from Japan. She performs solo on marimba and other percussive instruments and has released two solo albums, in particular Through The Looking Glass - which originally released in 1983 and gets a much needed remaster here by WeRelease/MusiquePourLaDanse/MentalGroove. Takada's renewed success is a true product of our times: her music was 'discovered' via YouTube's algorithm a few years back which amassed millions of views and created a new generation of fans enamoured by her amazing work. In the wake of the YouTube video's popularity, she has toured Europe multiple times and other albums by her have also since been reissued in the last year.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Review: Blending elements of ambient, abstract experimentalism, minimalism and modern classical, Yutaka Hirose's sole LP - 1986's "Nova + 4" - has become something of an in-demand item in recent years. Here it gets the reissue treatment, allowing those of us without deep pockets to wallow in its evocative charms. It's an intriguing affair, with Hirose drifting between beguiling (if unusual) soundscapes (see "Nova", where metallic chimes and gentle piano motifs unfurl over sustained ambient chords), sublime minimalist ambient (the echoing melodies of "In The Afternoon" and cascading bliss of "Through The Windows"), slow burn new age ("Taiko", "Humming The Sea") and deliciously experimental sound collages ("Epilogue").
