WAFFLES 002
Cat: WAFFLES 002. Rel: 14 Jan 20

Disco/Nu-Disco
Macao (4:42)
Spanish Fly (5:48)
Review: The Waffles label arrived last September with a much loved 12" that spanned the discotheque spectrum and had plenty of people salivating, no doubt thanks to some prolonged plays at Jim Murphy and the Dewaele's Despasico. The Soulwax brothers being Belgian has led many to speculate if Waffles is their work, cos you know the country is famous for them... A second helping of Waffles is here and boy is it tasty. Up top, the sleazy "Macao" stomps out on a mid-tempo bump, whilst "Spanish Fly" glides along happily with an absolutely killer bassline. The resident disco digger at Juno is off today, so we're not so sure about the source material here, but Waffles have struck gold once more.

Aqua Dolphin (5:27)
Computer (5:54)
Review: The mysterious Waffles series, rumoured to be the work of Belgian legends Soulwax, has been one of the success stories of 2016. It has succeeded, in part, due to the eccentricity of much of the source material. There's plenty more madness on this fifth volume in the series, with A-side "Aqua Dolphin", offering a skewed fusion of razor-sharp, acid-style electronics, mind-altering new beat rhythms, and plenty of weird, chopped-up vocal samples. Flipside "Computer" boasts similarly psychedelic acid lines, alongside gravelly, end-of-days vocals, synth riffs seemingly inspired by the original 1988 version of The KLF's "What Time Is Love", and a head nodding, toe-tapping breakbeat rhythm. We have no idea what the original source material is, but it's a deliciously weird and wonderful re-edit.

Disco/Nu-Disco
Hankuri (5:17)
49 Gang (5:11)
Review: Three 12"s deep and still no clue as to who Waffles actually is. Just as tasty, fluffy and addictive as its predecessors, "Hankuri" struts with a certain amount of Afro charm while plodding with Italo-like thrust. "49 Gang" takes an even slower route with a dubby sheen and playful funk that's reminiscent of the Norway's cosmic eruptions 10 years ago. Like the previous outings, both cuts have been experienced on the Despacio system in recent months and both hit hard.

Uganda (5:38)
Uriah (6:18)
Review: Not a lot is known on the mystery baker behind these two scrumptious funk cakes besides the fact that Despacio have been spinning both sides... And the fact they're both delicious. "Uganda" is a percussion heavy slam-jamboree that switches into a juicy bass-driven disco groove midway. "Uriah", meanwhile, is a chugging, star-gazing Moroder homage that adds more layers and textures with every bar. Tasty.

Poland Waffle (6:15)
Croatia White (6:10)
Review: Since launching back in 2015, the Dewaele brothers' Waffles series has been responsible for some of the best re-edits around. The series' genius lies not in the floor-friendly nature of the showcased reworks - that goes without saying - but in the unashamedly weird and wonderful source material the Belgian siblings choose to play around with. Few will know the original version of "Poland Waffle", a sludgy and sleazy mutant disco workout full of heavy, dub disco style bass, hypnotic drums, alien electronics and a half-sung, half-whispered vocal refrain ("Red light... blue light"). As for "Croatia White", you'll struggle to find a more muscular and mind-altering chunk of post-Italo European disco. In other words, this serving of Waffles is every bit as tasty as its predecessors.
