Review: The man, the legend, Darren Cunningham finally comes through with his third full-length album, after two splendid efforts for London's Honest Jon's. This time he resides at Ninja Tune and his own Werkdiscs in a veritable fight to the death, with what has been hinted as potentially being his last album under the Actress pseudonym. The tone is sparser and the feel is more textural compared to his earlier work, amalgamating dissonant flurries of noise together with shuffle-proof beats and that inimitable Actress deviance. Presented as a sequel to Hazyville, this rather stush looking boxset includes that album on vinyl for the very first time so you can assess how the two fare yourself.

Pharoah Moon Rising
Review: Don't you just love it when Darren Cunningham just drops an Actress EP out of nowhere, mid-week!? This has come to be the Actress way as of late. Releasing unannounced EP's out of his own Werkdiscs label that almost always contain the most obscure of title names. "Xoul" is the luminary's current mood, a mixture of distorted glitch, shimmering melodics and that classic mutant touch which he so easily applies to all his music. This is Actress at his most musical, such that the lightly detuned keys of "Xoul Particles" seem like lost musical notes in a deep wormhole in outer space. "Pharaoh Moon Rising" is the odd one out, both by name and nature. However, although Cunningham goes for the all-out lo-fi on this one, there is still a sense of musicality and arrangement amongst his madness. What can we say? It's another Actress classic. Recommended.

Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion
Floating In Ecstasy
Silver Cloud Dream Come True
Review: There's something heart warming about the faulty connection glitches and dusty electronics of a Darren Cunningham production. "Voodoo Posse Chronic Illusion" from the Silver Clouds EP is one such example. Noises which would normally sound out of place sit ever-eloquently between plucked harps strings, reverberating bells and wood block percussion. At first "Floating In Ecstasy" is a little confusing - is it whether 33rpm or 45rpm? Pitched down it sounds like something that could soundtrack a scene of a staggering ghoul bearing down on a cornered victim, while pitched up it sounds somewhere between 80s EBM and electronic gothic rock. "Silver Cloud Dream Come True" however is definitely meant for 45rpm play with a drum pattern that jitters intermittently between varied glockenspiel chimes.

Review: Announced with the most cryptic of statements and accompanied by a thousand online think pieces, the long awaited Ghettoville from Actress is finally here! Much like previous long players from the Werkdiscs boss, Ghettoville is not an album your brain will digest in one sitting, especially since it packs in sixteen tracks across the three slabs of vinyl. Described as "the bleached out and black tinted conclusion of the Actress image," Ghettoville draws on all the familiar Actress signifiers with the ghostly remnants of hip hop, Detroit techno and Chicago house scattered across the album. On immediate listen there are a few standout tracks, the ragged Motor City soul of "Gaze" and the brilliant finale "Rule" but we'll let you discover the rest for yourselves.

Review: London's Werk Discs have extended their international label mission far and wide for the summer, here managing to ensnare Leipzig's very own Disrupt. Recent interest in dubstep and all matters sound system have laid the groundwork almost perfectly for this release, not to mention a gradual and imperceptible shift in focus for diehard seventies roots fans, learning to love the early dancehall times, before gun talk and slackness suggested reggae might self combust. The eight bit spasms of Casio and Atari sounds worked some alchemical magic on the mid eighties dancehall scene, and Disrupt looks set to bring the appreciation of this style full circle with a series of deadliest releases. Check this "Foundation Bit" out.

This Goes On
Review: Those still coming to terms with the dense, morose nature of the recent Actress album will be pleasantly surprised by the contrast provided by his label's latest signing. Giganta's Werkdiscs debut is full of brightly lit musical textures and twisting rhythmical complexity. It's little surprise to hear that Giganta, the production alias of Athens-based Eleni Adamopoulou, also counts sound design on her list of talents with the four tracks here presented as "her fight against the negativity and violence that has surrounded her in her city since 2008." The former RBMA graduate makes very smart usage of processed vocals (perhaps her own) on lead track "Can't Stop Playing" with the element a crucial aspect of the rhythmic momentum rather than accompaniment, whilst "Spot Scene" and "Force" will appeal to Luckyme advocates.

Review: A regular fixture at Hamburg's Golden Pudel club where she presides over the Birds and Other Instruments night, Helena Hauff is a killer DJ with a keen interest in classic and contemporary electro, something confirmed via the Obscure Object C90 mixtape released recently on the Krokodilo Tapes cassette label run by Blackest Ever Black. A longstanding friendship with Actress has resulted in his Werkdiscs label issuing Actio Reactio, her debut EP of solo productions. Both the title track and "Break Force" see Hauff utilize her arsenal of analogue gear to deliver two tracks of acid-drenched hardware techno in the mould of producers like Svengalisghost or Beau Wanzer, while shorter production "Micro Manifesto" is more grounded in the realm of primitive electronics with Minimal Wave act In Aeternam Vale a good reference point.

Lone's 'Once In A While' has been one of the most in-demand tunes of the past six months, and now finally it's going to hit the racks courtesy of Werk Discs. Previewed on Kode9's DJ Kicks mix, and positively drooled over by countless other top-line selectors, 'Once In A While' is a luxuriant rush through glowing synth clouds and sun-dappled deep house of an early 90s vintage, that instantly captures the imagination as much as it rapidly raises the spirits, providing a classic Lone atmosphere, with a rudely funky bassline to keep feet moving as the heart-melting melodies overlap. Sinden's version places a snaking soca rhythm at the centre of the mix to draw out increased levels of dancefloor energy, while newcomer Midland heads in the opposite direction to spin a delicate web of floating, pulsing grace from Lone's original silken threads. A glorious 12" that's sure to chart high on many best-of lists come the close of the year.

Review: Following up on a strong first year in the releasing game, Moire is back on Werk Discs with his messy take on analogue techno, a celebration of lo-fi charm permeating every inch of the release. "BBOY 202" leads the charge with a cloying barrage of sizzling drums, shapeless vocal loop and bloated bass, bouncing with a playful energy even as it hits hard. "False" is the more gentle offering, dropping feathery hits of percussion into fluttering loops over a wistful synth refrain. In the beguiling yet friendly atmosphere he creates, Moire has crafted a very special kind of otherworldly trip for those with adventurous ears.

Review: Stacs Of Stamina have managed to make quite a name for themselves in the past year - on releasing their "Tivoli" album, a diverse blend of grime, 8-bit pop, hip hop and their self styled Euro crunk they have garnered critical praise and huge acclaim from all corners of the world. Now it's time for them to make a return with a little help from their friends of course. First up is a remix from someone a little special: Wonder. As Dizzee Rascal's DJ, the man Wonder has been rather busy in the last few years, but he allowed himself time to chop Stacs's "Roll With It" into devastating pieces and come up with a mix that even surpasses the killer original. Waves of distorted bass bubble up over clipped beats that would give prime dubstepper Skream a run for his money! This is set to be one of the dancefloor grime/dubstep tracks of the year, and if you don't believe it then just try turning the track up on a big system - simply earth-shaking. Flip the record over for another surprise, a remix from the Euro crunk super group Radioclit which mangles "Stay Beautiful" until it sounds like a Germanic anthem to quasi-legal pharmaceuticals and badly shaken cocktails - this is one for those ladies out there who wanna get down! Another wicked addition to the always mind-altering Werk label, all that's left to do is roll with the punches.

Review: Featuring classic and exclusive tracks from the successful Grim Dubs vinyl series! and finally it arrives, the long awaited mix CD from the totally spannered Werk crew, well known in the London area for stealing lollipops from small children and frightening grannies on the bus. Instead of taking the simple route and releasing all the tracks from the now infamous Grim Dubs' series of 12"s they have gone all out and compiled a selection of new, exclusive and classic grimey dubstep bangers. Hosted by those frightening fellers at Werk HQ, Grim FM comes to you direct from London town, complete with commercial breaks and emcee spots from Werk's talented roster, in true pirate session style. So for an hour of bass led insanity with a comedic streak- look no further, keep it Grim! Features tracks from Starkey, Atki2, Monkey Steak, Ben Codec and more!
