Review: Before becoming Belgian new beat and techno titans, Praga Khan and Chris Inger were collaborators in a new wave influenced band called Shakti. "Verboden Dromen" gathers together the best of the outfit's work recorded between 1987 and 1990, offering up tracks that join the dots between intoxicating synth-pop, moody new wave, hypnotic grooves and dark and sleazy dancefloor moments. All of the tracks have stood the test of time remarkably well, with highlights including the humid and exotic chug of "Kamasutra", the hallucination-inducing tropical fever of "Demonic Forces" and "Shanah", and the bustling, club-ready bounce of "The Awakening", which sounds like the Thompson Twins after one too many tabs of acid.

Review: Berlin-based Italian producer Shapednoise presents his first album in four long years, and it feels like a bold next step for the project, without rewriting any of the history behind it. Review: Not to be mixed up with the celebrated English footballer, Alan Shearer is an alias of Frederic Viger, who released albums of minimal wave electronics and synth pop from the mid-80s to the mid-90s. His debut, Dark Is The Colour, is a coveted curio from the mists of time (aka 1985), steeped in all the neon-lit allure you could ever wish for from an album of this ilk. Drum machines galore and glorious synth compositions shot through with a pervading spookiness - it sounds great for the era, not as noisy and lo-fi as similar efforts. Review: In 1984 Japanese pianist Satsuki Shibano composed and compiled a series of reinterpretations of compositions by the French composer Erik Satie - in turn known for his minimalist and avant-garde works, the 'Gymnopedie' the most ubiquitous among them. Shibano's takes on an incredible quantity of Satie's works, from 'La Balancoire' to 'Voix D'interieur', are about as pure as piano compositions can get, starkly carving out their nearly Platonic form.. Review: As the title suggests, all of the material on this new album from Shibuya Station was recorded at the eponymous station in Japan. The music has previously been flawed as part of various compilations but has never been in one place before. It's leftfield minimal synth with an electronic brightness and cold but alluring rhythms made on gear such as various Korgs, Moog Little Phatty, Moog Voyager, various Roland keyboards and VST synthesisers such as the ARP Odyssey. All that defines the vintage textures of the sounds across six captivating tracks.

Review: Japanese harpist Ayako Shinozaki's 1974 release 'Music Now For Harp' is a rarity, a sprawling journey through strings, percussion and electrochord that culminates in a 25-minute ambient piece 'Heterodyne (Or Surfing)'. It's magical and gripping, and is finally being released outside of Japan for the first time - a remastering and reissue in collaboration between Nippon Columbia and French label Wewantsounds. The sounds are otherworldly and entrancing, 'Stanza II' is evocative of a horror-themed Kabuki display, the strings deftly floating around a poignant aura of droning tension. Featuring the original artwork from Kohei Sugiura, this new package comes adorned with an obi belt and a booklet with liner notes from Alan Cummings.

Review: David Shire has one hell of a back catalogue. Active within music since the 1960s, and specifically theatre and film soundtracks in the 1970s, while many of the biggest names behind movie scores have a tendency to explore the same avenues, and therefore wind up creating tunes for relatively similar flicks, in this case that's not really true. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (the original, of course), All The President's Men, and parts of Saturday Night Fever give some idea as to the breadth of his mastery.
The Conversation slips right in there in terms of period and genre, but is, of course, a very different classic to a movie about a New York subway train getting hijacked or social tensions in Brooklyn at the height of the disco era. While largely focused on piano solos, we also get late night dance floor jazz, tense drone, and moody avant-garde, just in case the on-screen action wasn't brooding enough already.
