Review: DJ Central presents three new aliases on this elegantly put together 12". Conjuring up the perfect recipe for a DJ Cake, Central blends and explores the likes of pulsating atmospheric techno on the track "Balast", smoothly escalating breaks on "Ko Ko Dak Dak" and hazy crackling ambient on the finale "Daeksel". Unique, inspiring and truly excellent works from the one they call DJ Central.
Review: Shadowy London producer Filter Dread returns from Beyond Saturn with four new futurist designs. This time on Seattle newcomer label Tech Startup. Maintaining his stark ravey elements, pneumatic breaks and grainy bass signature, the vibe remains hardcore, rough around the edges throughout. "Rainforest" is near militant with its drum edits and warped, detuned synth washes while "Blizzard" brings a crush sense of decay to the percussion and much more of a subverted electro feel to the mix. Flip for two more weapons: the gnarled, schizoid "Tripping Up" which touches on breakcore but at a much slower tempo and "RX 4 Real" which taps into the classic hardcore aesthetic and flips more switches than Battersea Power Station.
Review: De:tuned's 10th anniversary series has so far served up killer, previously unreleased material from a whole host of underground heroes, scene pioneers and household names. They're at it again on this sixth volume in the ongoing series, which begins with a now rare - but typically weird and out-there - cut from early 90s ambient/techno/electro fusionists The Future Sound Of London. "Skinny XAM" is peak FSOL and sounds like it could have come from the improvised radio broadcasts that inspired the duo's "ISDN" album. Elsewhere, Monolake AKA Robert Henke does his best Autechre impression on the dark and punchy "ForC160q", while David Morley wraps undulating acid lines and creepy effects around a hypnotic ambient techno groove on "Traytor".
Review: From Copenhagen with love. After two years of planning, tweaking and fine-tuning, Danish groove monkeys Kasper Marott and Alfredo92 are proud to present their new label Axces. Repping their local crew, the label represents a community of artists including this single's co-producers Carl Emil and Lauge. "Os To" (which translates to 'the two of us') is as cute as it sounds. Dreamy, cosy, unhurried. "Fest Pa Taget" (party on the roof) raises the psychedelic factor a little as unearthly bubbles and chimes spin 360 around a jaunty rolling percussive beat. The start of something exciting and fresh; everyone has access to Axces.
Review: After a break of almost a decade, one of Skam's most mysterious artists is back in action. Since debuting in 2001, North Manc Beds has steadfastly refused to reveal their identities, preferring instead to let their music stand on its own two feet. Helpfully, their standards remain high 18 years after they made their bow. Beginning with the dystopian, string-drenched dark ambient of "MoKo", the publicity-shy outfit saunters between off-kilter industrial rhythm tracks ("Jussbassoneandone"), murky IDM ("FRBounces") and creepy post-apocalyptic soundscapes (the odd field recordings, elongated tones and sparse beats of "Safebliss 53 Cond P455"). There's also a rather fine bonus remix in the shape of the Nabz & Cluff version of "Stelcore2", which sounds like a dancehall riddim conjured up by Autechre.
Review: Sahko has decided to offer up a series of releases focusing on choice unreleased works from the late, great Mika Vainio's archives. The first, "Arc 1", showcases a 32-minute piece (here split into two parts to fit on one record) originally recorded in 1994 for his Ambient City radio project at Helsinki's Museum of Contemporary Art. It's a sparse, stripped back affair, with Vainio alternating between drowsy, elongated ambient chords, crackling drones, fuzzy white noise, doom-laden tones, creepy sonic movements and hushed moments of intense electronic bliss. It's not Vainio's most blissful work, but it is hugely enjoyable; an experimental ambient journey that's arguably darker and more unsettling than many of his records as O.
Review: Jolly Discs is a London-based label operated by Guy Gormley (Enchante) and Rory Gleeson. Here, Gormley teams up with David C. Gray as Special Occasion for some oddball downtempo weirdness on the Ibiza Redux EP - which was without a doubt one of the more interesting records we had to review this week. Featuring balmy tropical reductions as heard on "Rampling", through to the chilled-out bedroom balearica of "Let Me In" to a moment of hazy and dubbed-out deepness as heard on "@ Rupies". Tip!
